H called the non-emergency cop line to report a 1 year old's bday party at the park/playground this weekend (playgrounds are now open in CA). He said there were 30-40 people and all were maskless. I was surprised he decided to call. The cops came and broke it up within 15 minutes. The only reason H knew it was a party for a 1 year old was because he heard them joking that he had the cops called for his first bday. :/

A friend that is a nurse on the Covid floor got her second dose today. She was one of the first in my state to get it. My mom is scheduled for her second dose in about two weeks. I think since it's a hospital system it is going a lot smoother in regards to scheduling second doses.
My state DOH also updated their vaccine registration website so you can add any medical conditions that would make you higher risk. And then they will contact you when it is your turn for scheduling.
Since the federal guidance on this sucks, I'm really grateful I live in a state that has been very proactive and transparent about everything from the beginning. And our vaccine rollout seems to be going well.

Can I ask an opinion? DS has been going to in person karate class since July. They have taped out squares and limited class size and everyone must be masked. Some parents stick their nose out of their masks but they sit on the very other end of the dojang. The teacher was exposed and tested positive just before Christmas. The 23rd I think. They closed the school for the week between Christmas and New Years. I know that the teacher has been out to dinner in the past week. DS is supposed to go back to class tomorrow. I'm torn. I know in theory it's been "enough" days that it is "safe" for the teacher to be back in public but.... DS's mental health is very much tied to his ability to go to karate. I don't want to compromise his mental health but I'm scared for his physical health (and mine). Help? Did the instructor expose anyone in class? If it’s contained to just him, and everyone has to wear masks, I might consider sending your DS if it’s that important to his mental health. If there’s any question of additional exposure I might wait until next week to send him, just to see if it pops up in anyone else. Actually, if the instructor tested + on 12/23, tomorrow would be too soon for me (I’d want to wait at least 14 days). Based on what is believed to be his exposure date 17th (he was exposed outside of the school) the school was closed for a snow day and then for Christmas break so no kids were exposed. This sucks.

The numbers and near vertical slope in the rise of cases in the UK is mind boggling- helped along by the new variant. I can't even think where we are going to be in a few weeks (in the US). We know the new variant is in at least 3 states? Likely more? I just saw an LA Times headline saying the new variant was found in Big Bear so add California to your list if it wasn't on it already. I'm pretty sure it's been found here in San Diego as well.

PDQ - I feel whiny and overwhelmed, but need to get it out.
*poof*
A LT will be assumed to be sympathy. I’m just really overwhelmed. I am going to watch Tiny Pretty Things and make dinner, until The Bachelor starts.

This is what continually boggles me. A strong response to COVID would only have helped him. And saved lives. And my brain is literally incapable of processing why someone would choose to do the literal opposite, and that he's being cheered for it. To me it seemed like all he cared about was his reelection which meant keeping the stock market happy. Even people who didn't like him as a person would still credit the "strong" economy to him. Any bad news made the stock market tank which made him try to cover it up more but it would backfire. Remember that press conference about shutting down our borders to europe that caused a panic?? He should have just stayed out of the response but needed to take credit for everything and try to get good press. Oh I totally get that. The logical part of my brain is like "He's so selfish he gives selfish people a bad name, of course he'd fuck this up because he wants to keep the stock market in line". The rest of me just breaks - like, surely no person can be that FUCKING IRREDEEMABLY AWFUL, and yet... and then all the gears grind to a halt. Know what I mean?

My district is throwing around the idea of taking a couple million out of reserve funds to pay subs because we are so short-staffed. We are virtual this week and next because of staffing shortages, but not because of our record-setting cases or positivity rate (and they have emphasized that more than once). Apparently, we need to be open no matter the cost?
So random people deserve bonuses (aka hazard pay) but the people who show up for kids everyday don't get one? And really, I'm not interested in a bonus, but I'm really angry for our ridiculously underpaid TAs who they would never take reserve funds out for. Plus also they already get pulled all the time to sub, but they'll never see a dime of the bonus pay.
This isn't even a band-aid for this situation. They're about to blow millions of dollars for something that will have next to zero positive impact on kids. And then we won't have it in the very near future when it's desperately needed because tax revenue is way down.
I'm only a little pissed. /s

Infuriating.

It’s a problem in a lot of places. I remember toward the beginning of the school year, I was talking to a coworker whose kids were in person a couple days per week (different district than us). A week in, multiple teachers and students were out due to covid/exposure, and they couldn’t find subs. So they had to go back to virtual and have the non sick, quarantined teachers teach from there.

I’m so upset by what’s happening here and knowing that it’s going to get worse is soul crushing. And all these people are hounding the Governor for evidence of why we should be in lockdown. How do they not get that we were in lockdown and our spread was pretty well controlled and as soon as we eased up, we ended up worse than ever. I mean, isn’t that evidence?

Was there in-person class between the teacher's exposure and their testing on the 23rd where another participant could have been exposed? If no, I think your risk is the same as any other masked and distanced activity.

My 37 yo DH would have died. It’s so terrifying. (Though statistically, after SCA, your chance of survival is low- less than 10% in his case which is on the high end, I didn’t know that then- so I I kind of get it- but it’s so upsetting that these people won’t even have a chance)

Because I have no other adults ATM: SC’s positive rate is over 33% today. That’s 1 in 3 people likely infected. Our county, that had been holding steady in mid double digit case per day is now into triple digits. Our governor is doing NOTHING to limit anything. Our windows are open trying to keep the house cross ventilated as long as possible before a cold front comes through. There’s a huge group of kids playing outside, screaming at the top of their lungs. Including my kids friends. Meanwhile my kids are stuck inside waiting on Dad’s temp to be normal for 24 hours so our quarantine can begin. So not only do they have to deal with the stress inside our house, its very evident in they are missing out on a ton of fun outside. We’re literally never going to get out of this Catching up, but McMaster is fucking worthless. I'm so tired of the antimask nonsense on my town's FB page. "Don't be afraid, live your life". I'm sorry, but how does wearing a cloth over your face stop you living your life? Ugh.

It makes it very to decide where to spend my money (well whenever I can rejoin society).

My school added so many kids to the positive and/or quarantined list and it's only going to get worse. I think we'll start to see major staffing issues in schools in the next week or two.

I feel like the crazy one because I have not gotten any less scared of the virus. If anything, I'm more now than I was even in the summer. So many people are contracting it, even being cautious, and I'm terrified.

Ancedote: DD2's preschool does a work party every spring for parents, and they had some parents come in early to assemble some new furniture in March. DH was part of it. A week later, everything shut down. The school sent an email yesterday saying they were offering the option of early spring work party credit for parents to come help assemble new furniture for a modular classroom space that was installed. I was like DH, it's a trap!!! I definitely think things could get shut down again.
