But a new President and potentially a democratically controlled white house & senate! We should probably split the month starting at inauguration. Would prefer a non-45 tainted conversation for the hope Biden/Harris has currently put in my heart.

Happy New Year! Thank you all for being a port in the 2020 storm. We still have a ways to go and I’m grateful for you all.
Also, my parents have decided they are migratory now and have been working their way down to Florida the past week. I’m frustrated and sad about it. Mainly they will be very close to my brother, SIL & teen niece who are living like it is 2019: unmasked parties, mouth kissing greetings with anyone they know their first name (mostly SIL), all the things. I realize that I’m only raising my stress levels not posting about it, even while I’m still processing how I feel. I cannot control anyone else, but I’m worried that if they get sick down there...well, I’m really worried.

This post about Ed Yong's reporting highlights the danger of increased transmission by a new strain. Most people, I think, would intuitively think that a 50% increase on lethality would be worse. Turns out, that's wrong. It's the 50% more transmissibile virus that causes increased deaths.

And since I'm on an Ed Yong roll, here's his top 2020 covid pieces....

My nurse “friend” who got married on the 12th in Florida with tons of guests and zero masks and then honeymooned in Antigua.... tested positive yesterday for Covid.
She’s just SHOCKED.
I’m playing my tiny violin for her.

I saw that he's going back to work now on a book that he paused back in March. Whatever it is, I'll likely read it.

I honestly can't imagine how long it'll take for me to relax and be comfortable eating out at a restaurant once things go back to some semblance of normalcy.

I think that’s the cost of being on the money when it comes to COVID in the USA. But he’s not always this scary! His first book is all about animal-microbe symbiosis and is really interesting.

I hope people continue to discuss what covid survivors are often facing health wise. I know I'm preaching to the choir here but clearly a good portion of the population needs some help understanding that death isn't the only terrible outcome.

I think the first thing I will go back to one I am fully vaccinated is browsing Homegoods and Restore (masked and armed with hand sanitizer, of course). I have a mental list of at least a dozen little household items that I would love to have if I could find the right piece at the right cost. A mirror. A side table. Little shelves. Home decor. Bathroom cabinet organizers. Fancy hand lotion for the guest bathroom. I really miss bargain shopping for that stuff.

He has lung scarring with shortness of breathe and extreme fatigue five months out. It sucks so much.

elle, Minerva, - great points. Odds are, we would be okay. But with all the potential unknown long-term complications (ignoring for a moment the public health nightmare of spreading it to other folks) - it's not a risk I am willing to take for myself, or my family. Nope.

I have gone to our Home Goods when cases were lower but of course those were the days nothing is there. I didn’t realize how much ai realized on it for kitchen utensils and bedding. I missed the wrapping paper from there this Xmas.

My take away is we need to lock down tighter than we have been since last spring, and significantly speed up vaccinations. We need to get the first dose in as many people as possible and trust supply chains will deliver the second dose.

Every once in a while I get the I gotta get out of the house itis I drive around shopping areas and stores, parking lot full, keep driving. til I find a random store with barely anyone in the parking lot, take my wipes, sanitizer, good mask with filter and nervously enter store to look for these things that I think would make my home more comfortable or liveable. If I go down an aisle and see someone and can't immediately move to another aisle, then the store is too busy for my liking and I leave. Inevitably the usual suspects are FULL UP I've been spending those days in the XLarge dollar tree (and give myself permission to buy anything I see that looks interesting there, hahahahah) and one Big Lots near me (of all places) at least they have things like little shelves, and decor and organizers and hand lotion It keeps me sane.

I’m bullshit for people who are doing everything right and still get sick, and because of these types of folks insistence to be complete morons, their lives are more at risk. This girl is a damn nurse. She used to have some semblance of sense, and then she met her now Trumper H. She got her first vaccination late last week, too, so now he’s saying that the vaccines are worthless 🙄

Our new town has a Homegoods just 5 minutes from my house and I said to mh just last night that I couldn't wait for it to be safe enough for me to escape for an hour and peruse every single aisle there looking for things to decorate our new house. It sounds so delightful.

Minerva I’m sorry about your cousin’s long term symptoms. I updated in the GD Covid thread but my grandpa is home now with three pulmonary embolisms and a six month treatment plan for them. It’s mind blowing that people still don’t take this seriously.
