adelbert i would love to vacation, but I think Portugal is going to be on a number of flight block lists again. We will just have to find something in Portugal. Well you live in a gorgeous country so at least you can definitely vacation at home! We also did some Germany trips last summer visiting friends around the country and that was a lot of fun! We drive to Austria and Italy so of course that makes things a bit easier. But hopefully also Portugal's numbers go down! And are there any countries that keep Portugal on their good lists? I feel like there are normally a few countries that allow us in but that it's always changing- hard to plan for anything really!
We've booked everything without down payments so if everything changes we can easily cancel.
Also I think your youngest is old enough that I can really recommend renting a camper van and traveling around Portugal that way. Kids seem to love it, even though I don't find it very relaxing, but it does tend to be a great family trip.

Both my parents are now able to get the vaccine, so they hopefully will get in this week. My dad's doctor said she won't give me and my husband notes as his caregivers because we are only in our 40s. So back to waiting and not being able to really help my dad that much for a bit.

They have said gen. Pop. Adults can start getting it here in April and anyone who wants should have it by June.
Optimistic, but my employer supports a lot of vax rollout in general, so if they do open it up I think my chances are good.
Kids are not on track to get anything. We’ve said we will try to get to the US if my parents are vaccinated, for the summer. I’d prefer that at least one of us is vaccinated before we go, but know the kids won’t be. Given their current exposure level it is a risk I am ok with. All this is dependent on our insurance covering it — which I have heard mixed things about and will need to double check.

I know I keep talking about the Novavax trial I'm in but australia bought a bunch and the the data looks good allegedly. That should be EUA by March. It also can just be put in the frig so it's got a lot more flexibility

My dad is able to get his vaccine this week. Hopefully he actually does go and get it. He’s not very excited about it and I can see him make an excuse for missing his appointment.
I’m really keeping my fingers crossed on the J&J vaccine. If I’m remembering right, the US purchased/contracted the majority of their shots from J&J right? So if J&J are able to get approval and vaccines moving this should help the rollout tremendously? I hope it’s as effective as the other two.

+1 to annoyed at the rollout. My bff is getting it next week and she’s not high risk but has a sometimes public facing mental health job. Except she’s been able to not be in the field this whole time. So how about those elderly at risk ppl now? The public mental health workers have been some of the hardest hit. If this helps her get back in person etc. I'm not scandalized. I can't go into my job because it's too risky at this point. They have actually closed the courts down. I'm hoping when im fully vaccinated I will feel more comfortable going back. It's just a place thats really hard to control covid. As far as people getting vaccines there are some obvious ones where you like what but the majority by me have all been frontline workers, teachers, county workers and grocery as well as the old. My H got his because he works with the schools on sports. In NY they are just trying to get as many people vaccinated as soon as possible. Yup. My brother got the vaccine a month ago (his second shot is today!) as a substance abuse counselor. It’s been a very rough year in the counseling world. He had the option to work remotely, but chose not to except when forced to quarantine from exposure, because he is single, young, and healthy and was much more effective face-to-face. His presence allowed a few of his colleagues with children and high risk family members to spend more time working remotely. They all were eligible to be vaccinated at the same time through their employer. Shots in arms. I’ll take efficiency and widespread vaccination right now, even if it means some grifters sneak through to get vaccines before it’s their turn. It’s the same way I feel about government benefits.

richard that is what they should have done from the start, honestly. It's the most fair way to do it right now.

I’m frustrated by our state’s reopening guidelines for schools. Our school is reviewing the new guidelines and wants us to decide if we’ll send our kids back in mid-Feb. I looked at the guidelines last night and they still barely mention ventilation and are focused on “kids hardly get it and don’t get very sick”. The adults working at the school, fuck em. Basically. It’s totally kid focused. And whyyyy is ventilation still an afterthought?? Ugh.

I'm having a debate with my aunt and mom about the vaccination priority. Both my grandparents are already pre-registered for this week's lottery for a vaccine. My grandpa has cancer and several other high risk medical issues. My grandma has RA and other general getting older issues but not nearly as medically compromised as my grandpa. She's been the one doing the shopping and errands, etc. My mom and aunt think if she gets a lottery vaccine first that she should get it instead of putting in my grandpa first. Their rationale is because she's exposed by going out and she is his caregiver.
I get that but I still think there is a reason that highest risk should be highest priority. Since she can still carry the virus after being vaccinated and all. I know they are thinking of what if she gets sick and can't take care of him. I don't know that there is a right answer, I'm just curious to your collective thoughts.

H’s parents just got their vaccines. I’m glad for H but I feel bad for being resentful that they got theirs before my parents. They’ve been reckless (IMO) while mine have been very careful. 😔

They’ve been reckless (IMO) while mine have been very careful. 😔 I totally understand and would/will be on your bench. It's highly likely my ILs, who think everything is just hunky dory, will get vaccinated (if they even want to... don't get me started) before my parents. My FIL in particular is older than both my parents by over a decade so I get it, but they think because all of FL is open, everything is fine everywhere. Which... OMG NO. (Don't get me wrong, my ILs should absolutely be vaccinated and I am super annoyed they are even wavering on getting it. They aren't in great health, which just drives home they should be taking this seriously and aren't and dammit now I need to go make some stress relief tea.)

PDQ
So, the vaccination super station in my city has a goal of 5000 doses of vaccine per day, which is great. I guess my friend sort of fudged her credentials in order to get vaccinated there (she said her job was covid related)... but if they don't vaccinate enough people, they don't get all their funding, or something? I have extremely mixed feelings about this. She isn't super high risk, and can WFH in a non health care related job, but she does have an infant, and her H works outside the home and comes into contact with the covid virus (but not patients with it). She has been extremely careful during this entire thing, so she isn't one who has been flippant. But should she have gotten before people 65+? (It's open to them now.) And like my mom who hasn't been able to get one, 8 hours away? It isn't like she would have been able to come down here and get one anyway, I don't think.
Again, mixed feelings. I want EVERYONE vaccinated, and if the site would lose funding if they aren't sticking needles in arms, then I can't fault her. I lean more toward being glad she was able to get one, I guess.

The whole rollout has been a cluster. I'm hopeful that the new task force can get it more organized. I wish there was some way to keep people from cutting in line. My mom and dad and brothers have all gotten at least their first shot, but my 86 year old grandpa can't get an appointment. I definitely think there needs to be more of an effort to keep people from cutting, but unfortunately, it would come at the expense of an even slower roll out. Like they could have called and checked my friend's credentials, but do we expect people (that are largely volunteers, btw) to call for all 5000 people per day that they are vaccinating? I think *most* people will be honest. Hopefully. IDK. But I like what my work did. Just sent a scheduling ticket into my chart where I signed up. I wish that's how all hospital systems would do it. But that would only cover people that have active charts, which is probably not a large percentage of people, and especially people facing essential workers.

I will say, as a pregnant (non patient facing but outside the home) health care worker, I am frustrated that my hospital may not have enough doses for the second dose for some of us, but that people are skipping the line. So I do understand the frustration, 100%. But I also know those vaccines are in two different allocation pools and there isn't much my hospital can do except try to replenish their stash. Hopefully by next week when I am supposed to get my second dose.

The two state run stadium vaccination places here running like 10 or 12 rows of vehicles at a time, mostly 24/7.
All appt slots are full for jan and feb.
If you are in vehicle with someone who qualifies And they have extra vaccine due to no shows, extra in a vial or they get extra shipment more than planned for Then even if you arent in target group, you could get shot early.
Registering for those 2 state vaccine pods is on a website made by an incompetent person, but after fighting with it I at least know how to get on.
county run places are cluster to the extreme. Counties are all using different way to sign up and seem to be hiding the sign up website do only those really committed can figure it out.
My 80 yr old mom cant get an appt. So she is just going to wait til another vaccine is approved and the rush slows a bit in her area. Lol.

Oldest just interviewed for a job giving jabs (as the british call vaccination I think)
He makes $13 an hr as an emt at a sr center. Extra cents if he works nights, weekends or goes to someones home for a call.
This would pay $20/hr. And they want him since he has experience, could do any of the jobs, including monitoring for reactions after the vaccine.
He doesnt wanna pass that up. So hes given his notice.
2 problems. His work has planned to give everybody vaccines this week and now they dont think theyll give it to him since he wont be there for 2nd shot. And The new place doesnt have any vaccines yet. So he will be testing at their 24/7 covid testing place.
Garsh.

I just don't know if I can feel good about in person school until that happens. I am dying to send DD back to school, too.

They have said there is value if you are in the car with someone who qualifies then giving you the shot will give more prorection for the old people, hcw, teacher etc who qualify.
it takes more time to verify at check in and then turn you away if they cant verify. Which makes the process slower for everyone behind you in line. And that slow down will cost lives.

It is super frustrating to me that our state has mostly done super well with COVID restrictions and our government taking this seriously and yet we are insanely behind on vaccinations compared to a lot of the country. Why am I not surprised that red states seemingly have more vaccines...
