I just started Verity today. Hoping I enjoy it. I finished it yesterday. I think it took me about 3 days. The story was pretty captivating. Enjoy!

Then skip it and read Evelyn Hugo instead. 😆 I looked to see what I have in there The nightingale The great alone Daisy jones and the six The obsession The Nightingale and Daisy Jones were my top 2 for 2020! The nightingale is a bit heavier, and Daisy Jones still has some substance, but it’s more fun.

I just finished the Unhoneymooners and it was enjoyable. Trying to decide on my next read from my to be read pile- I borrowed a book from my boss, so it should be next so I can return it, but I really want to continue my light reading.

I really enjoyed The Glass Hotel, more than Station 11. But I also know my tastes are a little off the beaten track. If someone calls a book slow-moving or boring, I will probably love it.
I’m currently reading The Chosen by Chaim Potok as a buddy read with my BFF. And then MH surprisingly jumped aboard. I’ve read it before but it was a really long time ago. I remember loving it. Hopefully that doesn’t change. I hate when a reread spoils a favorite book. (Looking at you The Thornbirds).

I still have the copy I read when I was like 17 maybe? And it’s all written in and sticky-noted so I think I was pretty obsessed 😂

I was meh on The Glass Hotel too, and I felt guilty about it because I really liked her writing but I just couldn’t get excited about the story.
I just finished Homeland Elegies and The Moment of Lift, and now I’m onto The Midnight Library.

I read some more of Heart Bones on my kindle last night, but I need a physical book in bed it is my thing so I ended up picking up The Great Alone which was not my intention at first.

have just finished invisible girl (3.5 stars) and long bright river (4). i really enjoyed long bright river more than i expected to - writing was decent and was a complete page turner for me. i started anxious people a couple of days ago and i am finally getting into it after about 100 pages. it is my first book by backman.
also testing out audiobooks again since i was subscribing to audible without knowing and had enough credits for 10 books. so far i have listened to dear girls, stay sexy and don’t get murdered and a stranger beside me. i think i tolerate the memoirs or books narrated by the author better than some random narrator. content of stranger beside me was interesting but could not stand the woman narrating.

polson, there are always some terrible narrators, but I am the opposite. I really struggle with books narrated by the author.

I’m reading The Ten Thousand Doors of January and it’s slow going.
I feel like the magical door idea has been done a lot lately.

angelashly Question, when you read in bed do you have like a side table lamp on or use a book light? I think part of the reason I struggled with the first book I read this year was because it was a physical book and not on my kindle. I hated using a book light (I am a SS though and my kids sleep with me so I can't turn on a big light source)

I'm a big fan of lyrical, flowing writing and she is just so good at that for me. The writing has a haunting vibe that makes me immediately visualize emptiness covered in fog (if that makes any kind of sense lol). I read all 4-5 star books in a row for a bit and knew I'd be hitting a 3 star slump and here I am! I finished The Survivors (meh, I liked The Lost Man waaaay better) and Layla (I was bored for like 200 pages), and now I'm reading Outlawed. But I did The Good Girl's Guide to Murder and An Absolutely Remarkable Thing as audiobooks and really enjoyed both of those!

If I had someone in with me I would probably do a small bedside lamp

Also, I keep seeing reviews on it but my Amazon says it’s not available until February. Weird. And I loved Long, Bright River. I thought it was very well written and did a good job of exploring a difficult topic.

I got it through BOTM as an early release. The setting is fantastic (she is so good at settings), but I wasn't super invested in the story.

Well my mom decided she officially couldn’t handle the complications that came from borrowing her own digital books on Libby and getting them on the paperwhite I gave her for Christmas, so now I’m in charge of her account. This was after she managed to return one of my library books, borrowed an audio version, and somehow managed to buy a kindle book instead of borrowing it. She deregistered her paperwhite and then registered it again under my Amazon account, so now I will handle it all for her own my end. I told her I’m like her mom now, because she needs to ask me to borrow books for her and send them to her. She’s not allowed to do any of it anymore. 😂

polson I'm waiting on my hold to come in again for Anxious People because I didn't have time to get to it before. I'm a big fan of most of Backman's books but they do tend to take a while to get going. I really loved A Man Called Ove and My Grandmother Asked Me To Tell You She's Sorry. Oddly enough, I did not like Beartown but I'm pretty sure I'm the only one.

I really enjoyed A Man Called Ove but it took me several attempts to get through My Grandmother Asked me to Tell you she's Sorry - and to be honest I don't remember if I finished it. I ordered myself a book light from amazon that wraps around my neck so that I can try to read the stack of paperbacks I have before I need to return them to my sister. Having a light or lamp on in bed isn't an option.

bearfootzcontinued, I will put my flashlight on my phone on but that is annoying because it's so bright in one spot, so I will lean it against my chin and then it hits me in the face every once in a while if I sit up and forget its there

I can see how people would give up on it though, unfortunately.

We got this reading lamp for my 8 year old. She had been using a small headlamp. Her headboard is really wide but it still clipped on to it. It has two brightness settings and you can use white light or yellow light. We really like it. I haven't read for a couple weeks because I've been consumed with the news but I just finished book one of March by John Lewis and it is excellent. This may be my year of the graphic novel. I was already a fan but I can read them quickly and there are so many excellent books and memoirs in graphic novel form. Have you read Good Talk by Mira Jacob? I really liked it. It’s described as a “memoir in conversations”.
