I’m finding myself oddly fascinated by Thatcher. The whole “women don’t have the disposition to lead, I unpack my husband’s suitcases and iron his shirts” dichotomy with her confidence to lead in a hyper-masculine world. (Cabinet shuffling/purging scene)
Hope you guys don’t mind my live-blog here. 😂 My aquarium fish aren’t very interested in my insights.

My impression from the episode "Favourites"- they're all insufferable. This season is doing them no favors thus far.

This season has made me wonder what I would do with myself as a royal. I mean to have someone come in and open my drapes every morning sounds so luxurious. I also imagine they have fresh sheets daily. Children in the top boarding schools in the world.
I hate the sexism and double standard within the royal family, if you are male you can do no wrong, have nothing to answer for. I also like how they showed Diana dancing, made me adore her all the more.

Why does Thatcher always have her head turned to the side?! Does she have a crick in her neck??
I wanted to see more Fergie.
How crazy that some random guy gets into the palace not once but twice and even makes his way into the Queens bedroom.
I wonder what the good times with Charles and Diana were like. They had two kids so there had to have been a few time periods of them being into eachother... Fleeting moments like in Australia?
Thoughts as I was laying in bed last night

Whew, this queen is bitchy and passive-aggressive 😂 (“Some people just don’t feel at home at Balmoral. I don’t get it”) That dialogue between the queen and Thatcher after Balmoral was gold! The queen opens it aggressively. Thatcher parries each of her barbs with ease and gives back some more. "Speaking of bloodsport..."

I'm watching, of course, but only through Ep2 so far. I like it a lot so far. Was pretty bummed when I figured out where Ep1 was going with the boat bombing - I was so happy to start the season! And that is such a sad event.
Love Diana, love Margaret Thatcher. I liked seeing the Royal Family through Thatcher's eyes at Balmoral - that was a bit different for the show I think.
I was telling H about Gillian Anderson being a badass Margaret Thatcher (we're both big X-Files fans) and he was like ok, but you're not supposed to root for Thatcher!

I’m sort of shipping fictional Philip and fictional Diana on this hunting trip, tbh. Their relationship is portrayed very differently than it was in The Queen. But that was also post-divorce so I suppose it could just be due to the timeline.

I also loved the soundtrack during the scenes that were foreboding/darker.

I'm on episode 1. I'm liking it a lot. Loooove Gillian Anderson as Thatcher.

I'm only an episode in so far. As per, I feel a bit of... guilt? I guess? for enjoying it, knowing that so many of the key players are still alive and trying to go about their lives. Is that weird? Specifically last night was feeling for Mountbatten's grandson, the twin who survived the explosion, knowing that he has to relive that essentially being used as a dramatic plot device. He's only in his 50s! It really wasn't that long ago. He wrote a book that I might read someday. If I were royal, it would be so difficult not to jump in and defend something if I felt it had been depicted unfairly! I know that's sort of the story of their lives. I guess it's why I'm a commoner. That said, I'm okay with some drama! The last season was boring. I still can't believe they skipped over Princess Anne's kidnapping. I'm inclined to hate Tobias Menzies because of Outlander, but man he's such a good actor. I thought his acting in the scene with Charles about Mountbatten's funeral was so good. Lol I hate him too bc of Outlander. But he's done such a great job in this show.

I like Anderson as Thatcher, except she seems much older than mid-50s. I guess in the late 70s, 54 year old women looked prematurely old? She’s playing the voice oddly old, too. Like kind of hoarse? Thatcher at that age was (slightly, lol) softer looking and her voice sounded normal. She’s a great actress, though. Her reactions are so good. She seems to be overdoing it a little

Ok, the shade thrown at Andrew in the favorite children episode was pretty excellent.

They played the Iron Lady a bit sympathetically for my tastes. And Charles is so priggish and just foul. Some of his work in the past fifteen years have nearly made me forget I hate him lol. I was a real-time Diana fanatic but I was pretty young--I was 14 when she died--so I don't really have a.... realistic? view of her, despite reading about her and about the Waleses in ensuing years. I bristled a bit at how petulant she was but, I mean, she was 19. So. Probably accurate. I wish they had cast an actual dancer for the ballet bits.

I love Olivia Coleman, but I've gotta say the queen is my least favorite role I've seen her in. Her scenes with Thatcher are good. Beside those, not much.

I’m up to episode 6. The whole thing is baffling to me though. He spotted Diana. He was interested. He called her to come to balmoral. From there he acted like he hated her. And if they married Camilla off why didn’t they get her just sent away?? I truly hate Charles and Camilla. I have never forgotten. They chewed Diana up and spit her out. And then try to spin it as oh she had an affair first. Oh fuck off. She was so young and full of hope and Charles is dreadful.

I also think even if Diana wanted to stop the wedding once she realized the scope of the Camilla relationship she couldn’t. It was like a train full speed ahead, hop on or get out of the way. I found it interesting that The Crown hinted at the fact that Diana’s death wasn’t an accident.

E2, Thatchers at Balmoral “I shall go and check the ‘protocol sheet.’...Who cares?!” Denis Thatcher is me at my ILs’ house... I’m watching this now and cringing in embarrassment at how badly the Windsors are treating their guests. They really didn’t warn people to being wellies and outdoor clothes? They didn’t tell people what to wear at the different meal times? I thought for sure this business with the “tests” had to be made up but no there is widespread agreement that they did do this kind of thing to catch commoners out and put them on the back foot. Wtf. It makes them look bad, not their guests. And to hugely important people like the elected Prime Minister of their own country? It beggars belief. It is so unbelievably rude and crass. Talk about “classless” behavior! eta: I’m reading that the Blairs and Boris Johnson also failed the Balmoral Test. I can’t believe people put up with this kind of behavior. Why are the Windsors where they are in the social hierarchy? An accident of birth. A royal family in a supposedsocialist democracy is at worst a contradiction in terms and at best an extreme anachronism. You’d think they would be smart enough to realize they ought to be kindness and graciousness personified if they want to continue.

That episode made the Windsors look especially bad, but a lot of it is made up for maximum drama. For one, Thatcher would not be that stupid or clueless as to wear a blue dress when heading out to the rainy Scottish wilderness. It made her look foolish as well as the Windsors. I was shaking my head at the dramatic license the writers of that episode were taking.

I’m sure most of the details and especially the dialogue are made up but but it sounds as if the broad strokes are true. Thatcher did show up without the right clothes and was bad at parlor games. She did leave early and called Balmoral “purgatory.” Observers agree that the visit played a part in cementing her anti-aristocracy views. I’m objecting more to the idea of “testing” people like this though which everyone agrees that the family did like to do. I think that is crazy and miserable.

You know, Margaret really has a lot to say about how her family treats people (herself included) and yet couldn't be fussed to help Diana at any turn.
*This of course is all based on the Crown portrayal and what little insider information we have about personal relationships within the actual royal family
