I think this is perfectly reasonable. The entire point of masking and social distancing is to be able to do things while also not spreading covid. This is very interesting. We’re finishing a 14 day quarantine from a positive case in my DS’s class. Masks are required (except for eating) and no one else has tested positive. I guess they’re just being conservative? Either way, this makes me feel personally better! So our region lead said for now that they are probably being overly cautious until they get a feel of things. As they see how things transpire they will most likely not quarantine entire classes. Our kids get mask breaks when they do worksheets (so from what I can tell like 2-3 a day) and eating.

I just don't necessarily think no quarantine is going to be bad, either.

Our state health department is now saying that people exposed to/close contacts of covid positive people do not need to quarantine for 14 days if both parties were wearing a mask. WTF. I feel like our state is just actively trying to kill us all at this point. Masks have been shown to be quite effective, especially when both parties wear them, so I actually don't have a problem with this. The problem is that masks are not mandatory here. So they are dangling this as an incentive to schools to have them make people wear masks. If masks work so well (which obviously they do) then mandate that people wear them. Our governor is just digging her heels in on this and its frustrating. My hometown school does not require masks and no one wears them. This is not uncommon here. I'm thankful our school at least requires them. However we will be going back full time in about 3 weeks so social distancing won't be possible anymore which makes me nervous. People here are acting as if life is back to normal.

I feel like our state is just actively trying to kill us all at this point. I do not understand the inner workings of Covid Kim's brain. This update is incentive for school districts to encourage mask use. How about just mandating masks?! No, because Iowans will "do the right thing". Excuse me while my eyes roll into the back of my head. I am so sick of her. Her refusal to mandate masks is almost comical at this point. Like I seriously do not get why she is digging her heels in so much about it. We are still one of the worst states in the nation, hospitalizations are almost back up to the highest they have ever been. Things are not under control here. Plus the 14 day numbers they are giving the schools to decide if they should reopen are not at all accurate. I'm thankful masks are required at our school because so many people in my city do not wear masks. Our store doesn't even require employees to wear them so I no longer go there. Its just so discouraging.

Masks have been shown to be quite effective, especially when both parties wear them, so I actually don't have a problem with this. The kids in our schools don't have to quarentine even if the kids in their class as log as they were masked and social distanced. And we're a very strict plane I would feel better if this were the case here, especially if they were also using social distancing. But our governor has mandated school go back at least 50% and so most schools are back full time and without a mask mandate so social distancing and masks aren't really happening.

Yeah, our district is doing the same re: masks and quarantine. I am okay with it...I've really come to trust the mask. Honestly school is going great. The district has it's own dashboard so you can look at the stats daily. Right now in a district of 60,000 there are 4 active student cases and 3 active staff. It's like a 0.04% positivity rate. We are in our 4th week. Right now my school is at a 0.45% positivity rate. I think we are doing okay? But we are currently hybrid and will be going back full time likely in 3 weeks so social distancing will probably not be as possible. So we'll see how that impacts the numbers.

This school conversation is timely. My district is in it's 3rd week of hybrid in person and it seems to be going pretty well. There have been 2 cases at two different schools but so far it doesn't seem to have spread to others in their classroom.
Pre-k through 3rd goes full time 4 days a week and 4th and 5th rotate two days a week.
My kindergartener is really struggling with virtual so I asked about switching her after the trimester but they have a spot open now so we are strongly considering sending her. My county's positivity rate is low at 1.30% and overall my state is doing really well. Bleh. These decisions are so hard to make.
Eta: we've been doing school virtually for almost two months now and it's not getting any better with time.

We have counties here at 28% positivity rate and that's decreased since last week (I think they were at 32%) and they still have schools there full time with no mask requirements.

cp3 sending my kid has been so good for his mental health. With a rate that low and if you are comfortable with the schools safety/contact tracing program I would send her. My kid who loves school for the most part and loves to read really went backwards with his attitude in the spring towards school. He’s so excited with his work now and talks all about his day and is reading non stop again. It’s been such a nice change.

My kids have been in school for eight weeks. So far everything is going well. They are happy and doing great. Our numbers are released weekly and there have been the most cases at the high school level. Elementary has had eight cases total out of the entire (very large) district. Everyone is masked except during lunch. We will see what happens as we get into flu season, of course.

My nephew is hybrid and we had to take him to school one day last week and since then she's been asking about it since seeing all the kids getting dropped off. I think she really misses it. And she's done so much better with her therapies now that they are in person versus virtual so I'm hoping the same will happen with school.

When your son was in person did he have any extra accommodations for his orthotics? She hasn't been wearing them full time since we've been home but she can't put them on alone so she wouldn't be able to change out of them if she needs a break. I would like her to wear them but not if it will be too much of a hassle.

ETA: Read the damn thread. Yeah I talked to my brother last night and asked if his daughters were in school and bis response was like why TF wouldn’t they be. Oh right, because IA. Then he proceeded to bitch about how he will never get tested or have the girls get tested because of the swab. Internally I was thinking, this is why we aren’t visiting. Because I can’t trust my family. Granted this is the same brother that Xmas when my DD was 1 and we stayed with, he didn’t tell us until we arrived that his kids had bronchitis. Surprise, my DD got croup that trip! Weeeee.

I would like her to wear them but not if it will be too much of a hassle. He did at first. He was in K when he first got them. He only wore them at home for the first few weeks and we gradually built up the time he wore them to 8 hours comfortably. We had to get them adjusted by the orthotist at least once to make sure they didn’t rub. Once they fit correctly and his feet were used to them, he wore them to school every day without breaks. We asked teachers to try to keep him out of puddles to avoid wet socks and shoes leading to hot spots. If they knew it would be unavoidable, they would put plastic bags over his socks and braces. He couldn’t take them on and off by himself at that point, so the teachers helped him when necessary. The teachers didn’t seem to have any issues with it and we all tried to avoid making a big deal about it to him.

Window decorations on a local doctor's office. Is it just me or does this seem in poor taste? Maybe if people actually believed science I could have a chuckle at this, but... nah.

We just got the email today that we're going to Phase 2 = two days on campus and 3 days virtual...there will be two cohorts (10-12) that go Monday/Wednesday and Tuesday/Thursday. We of course had our biggest jump in positives this week...two weeks past Labor Day, but are still under the metrics they set for Phase 2 and we'll be here for at least 6 weeks before evaluating for Phase 3 which is combining the cohorts for Monday/Wednesday/Friday on campus.
I'm okay with it for now. DS is in TK, which we would not even have done if they weren't going to do any on campus and DD is starting a K-5 Spanish Immersion program in 1st grade...so having full days on campus in person is going to be pretty nice for her.
H is still working at a restaurant and I've been working on campus (locked down as it is), so I'm in the cautious, but hopeful stage of life.
