This was being discussed in great detail on my local Facebook page. I don't want to minimize the potential spread of being in person at schools, but I think it's important to note that it seems that none of the 6 teachers caught it while actually teaching, which is what the headline sort of implies IMO. I think all but one tested positive before school started. The other was teaching remotely.

So I'm kind of in my feelings about people who are borderline COVID deniers being all in on 9/11 memorials. That is not to take anything away from 9/11, at all. But 190K+ people have died and people are not the least bit bothered. I cannot see how those things can co-exist.

I think all but one tested positive before school started. The other was teaching remotely. I can see that - but I guess my point is that teachers are not indestructible. Teachers can, and will, catch Covid-19 and die (catching it in or out of the classroom). So yes, while we have to manage our children's mental wellbeing and the desire to be in the classroom, we also need to understand that some of these children will be super affected if their teacher ends up dead. Anecdotally, my own FB feed went from praising teachers back in the spring, to very literally telling them that they need to suck it up and sacrifice themselves in the fall because kids need to go back in person to school.

I don't think anyone here thinks teachers are indestructible. We're all just doing the best we can. But saying "At least 6 teachers have died since school started" directly implies that they're deaths were due to being back in the classroom. Twisting the words to make it seem like something it's not is rubbing me the wrong way.

Welp, we lasted 3.5 weeks with hybrid. District had 4 positives today, so we're full remote for the next two weeks.

My son just asked me about still getting to wear a costume for Halloween. I haven’t even thought that far. If any of you have, how are your neighborhoods or communities handling it? We usually have like 500 kids on our street, so I definitely will be turning off the light. Now that I am thinking of it, maybe I’d do a family movie night in the backyard with our projector and have a fire pit with costumes for just my kids. One Halloween, several years ago, we had been to the doc with my son for appointment. At the time, his white blood cells (that’s oversimplified, his ANC) were real low — low enough that he would have been hospitalized with a fever. We asked the doctor if it’d be ok for him to be out just for a few houses and she said ninja turtle mask and outdoors, it was ok. Granted, she was the doctor that pushed for as much normalcy as possible when going through chemo, but still. It makes me wonder if Halloween in masks is possible if there were guidelines. Either way, we’re out for this year, but I don’t think it is neccessarily impossible to do lower risk. That was an anecdote to just point out I don’t know what risk levels and what’s ok. Maybe just pack the neighborhood Boo Witch with goodies and call it good? My plan is to put a bowl of candy at the end of my walking path and sit on my porch in costume and wish anyone who comes by a Happy Halloween. That's a good ten feet of distance.

Our new neighborhood usually does a Halloween parade. I’m curious whether it will happen this year. I’d consider letting A go. He’s great about wearing a mask and keeping distance when we’re outside.

I think I’ll still get them costumes and just play it by ear. I could do without all the candy in the house so it may be a good year to do something different.

H and I are planning to be Alexander and Eliza but those costumes are going to be $$$ so if ToT isn't happening we'll probably just.....not.

Virtual schooling was so hard. I kind of lost my shit today. I ordered pizza for dinner because I give up. I logged out of work 45 minutes early because my brain has turned to mush from constant anxiety. If we have to be virtual for the entire school year I'm ... I don't even know! Not good.

It is. K cannot understand most of what's happening in the Spanish instruction. I suspect that in-person she was figuring out a lot of what was being said through physical cues from the teacher, which are absent on Zoom. Plus the additional concentration it takes. She can concentrate enough to manage Zoom or she can concentrate enough to translate the Spanish. But not both at the same time. MH is supervising her, but he doesn't speak Spanish, so he doesn't know what's going on either. And K has adopted next-level sarcasm as a coping mechanism. She learned it from me, so I'm adding parental guilt on top of everything. I could cry. Actually I AM crying. I'm a freaking mess.

This was our first remote week and we have another next and then we're supposed to go back. 🤞 My daughter's school delayed two weeks without opening because of several positive teachers, but is now two weeks in hybrid and going good. We'll see how long that can go. Our numbers suck down here in region 4 😔

But the universtities are definitely driving case numbers up.

@uncapriswife I’m sorry. It’s SO hard. We are struggling too. I cried everyday except today due to some technology fuckup or challenge.
I chatted with our principal via phone yesterday about dyslexia testing and services and she asked “have you thought about having her come back in person?”
Omg. Yes. Of course I have. Like I’m enjoying this. 🙄
I’m going to end this period of life with an addiction. Alcohol, pot, benzos or sugar. Still unsure which, but one of them for sure, possibly multiple.

Which means DD uses it in every sentence now.

Uncaripswife our experience is very very similar with the Spanish part of the day. It’s so frustrating and painful. And then I feel bad because I think of all the ESL families that this is just life. This is all so tough. Though I will say this generally going better than the spring. Her teachers are trying vvv hard. Of interest, Clara’s English speaking/teaching teacher is a social justice activist and had the kids do a poll and was like this is just like when your parents will vote and everyday they are reading a book about diversity and inclusivity. She has a bunch of civil rights poster hanging behind her on zoom.
