I just read that Astra Zeneca is halting their vaccine development because someone they tested it in had a serious adverse effect (and they have a high threshold for labeling something a serious side effect). I hope that person is able to recover, and that this wasn’t the October surprise vaccine.

Wow. This is pretty crazy. Really puts things in perspective. Trust no one. It's so sad. And I am dumbfounded that someone attended a wedding and went to work at a county jail and infected like 50 inmates because they can't be bothered to wear a mask at work. And there are now two other outbreaks in the town the pastor and church are in.

We moved to yellow for the county today. Which means in person/virtual alternate schedule next week for schools and bars can open. Anyone want to bet how long we stay yellow? The district health dept only changes categories every two weeks.

The cases in Korea seem to be trending back down after they increased restrictions in response to the outbreaks. Hopefully they can get things back under control again soon.

5 counties in CA moved to a tier lower from the top today. So now my county is the hold out in our immediate area that is still in the highest level. Not surprisingly we have several really diverse cities in our county that have astronomical rates compared to other nearby cities. The patterns are stark.

Holy shit.
AAP says 513,000 children have come down with Covid. 70,000 of them were between August 20-Sept 3.

Last i saw like 10% of cases are children under age 10. Fairly rare under age 2 but if thst age gets covid they are more likely to need hospital icu intervention.
Its scary

Senator Warren just asked the Surgeon General how many people would have to contract the virus to achieve herd immunity and General Powell replied that he's seen data suggesting anywhere between 60 and 90%
So he should tell his boss to quit being an ignorant dumbass

This is a really good article by Ed Yong about the conceptual errors and magical thinking that are preventing America from actually dealing with the COVID-19 crisis. Like all of his coronavirus work, it’s very comprehensive and insightful. I think there’s a lot to digest here, including some criticism that probably applies to many of us here in terms of thinking about the pandemic as a moral problem primarily fueled by individual choices with lots of blame to be rushed out to ordinary Americans, rather than a systemic problem that needs to be fixed and is reflected in the individual decisions that people are making.

I'm not sure what thread this is being discussed in, but how WTF should I be feeling towards Woodward for sitting on publishing those comments in his book? I am swamped with work and DL and haven't been able to read.
Deep breaths. DL needs to get better.

They really want us all to die. I’m convinced. Also, people are big mad about no sports if schools are virtual so they probably want sports. I’m just exhausted by it all.

Can you imagine being up in space when all of this COVID stuff started and then having to return to THIS? Talk about coming down to earth. theface.com/life/jessica-meir-astronaut-nasa-covid-19An aside, I got to meet Jessica Meir when she went through the faculty interview process at my university. Her research is so cool.

My son just asked me about still getting to wear a costume for Halloween. I haven’t even thought that far. If any of you have, how are your neighborhoods or communities handling it?
We usually have like 500 kids on our street, so I definitely will be turning off the light. Now that I am thinking of it, maybe I’d do a family movie night in the backyard with our projector and have a fire pit with costumes for just my kids.
One Halloween, several years ago, we had been to the doc with my son for appointment. At the time, his white blood cells (that’s oversimplified, his ANC) were real low — low enough that he would have been hospitalized with a fever. We asked the doctor if it’d be ok for him to be out just for a few houses and she said ninja turtle mask and outdoors, it was ok. Granted, she was the doctor that pushed for as much normalcy as possible when going through chemo, but still. It makes me wonder if Halloween in masks is possible if there were guidelines. Either way, we’re out for this year, but I don’t think it is neccessarily impossible to do lower risk.
That was an anecdote to just point out I don’t know what risk levels and what’s ok. Maybe just pack the neighborhood Boo Witch with goodies and call it good?

We're definitely going to do something, even if it's just something with the family. We don't get a ton of kids through our neighborhood, but that's partially because none of our neighbors hand out. I wonder if they will cancel the trunk or treat down town. That's usually the busiest place. It takes place right before ToT hours. Per the school calendar, they are still planning parties/costume parade. But only half of the hybrid kids will be in school on Halloween with the current set up. They have sad everything is subject to change.

athn64 They cancelled our downtown event and the school’s Halloween parade. So I’m guessing it is each to their own, but our community seems to have a healthy amount of people just doing their things publicly.

We’re going to do an Easter egg type hunt for candy in our yard (or house if it’s negative temps like last year). I’ll let them dress up and take pictures and we’ll probably watch Hocus Pocus and chill. I hope it turns into a tradition. Mostly because I don’t want to go ToT in the snow ever again in my life if I can help it.

I’m perfectly happy handing out candy at home

I bought bouts and plan to have girls hunt them like eggs.

So this was something that was touched on months ago (that Trump received briefings back in November of 2019 about Covid) but I'm not sure we've really discussed it here? Given Woodward's recordings, I really think this should get more play.
