got it - so 94% of people ALSO had some very common conditions (like obesity, diabetes, heart disease). not that the other diseases necessarily were their cause of death. COVID probably was but they also had these other things too. right? Correct. And some actual doctors have chimed in and said there is almost always a comorbidity in an ICU death, but the people who don't want to hear that will ignore it. thank you

I miss eating at restaurants more than anything else. Still haven't done it, though.

Lately I've been thinking about the fact that gyms have been open for nearly three months, that restaurants have been open in some capacity. We have increasing community spread for sure, but not like the epic wildfire spread of disease that I worried about in the spring. As time goes on, I get more comfortable with doing certain things and going certain places because I'll mask and sanitize. And I won't deal with people in public who don't mask. I feel like we’re finding a good balance too. We’ve found a handful of places we feel very comfortable being and have gotten a good routine of not feeling isolated and worried and not just being out there living our normal lives.

School started today, someone posted a photo of a local high school with all the kids on lunch walking in a bunch because campus is open. It doesn't matter what the rules are for in the classroom if you are still going to let the kids go do whatever their stupid high school brains tell them to do.

I saw this in the WaPo this weekend and saved it to my phone as a handy reference for me to look at when weighing doing something new. This is interesting but I’m also like, how in the world do I know how well ventilated any particular indoor space is?

Ventilation through a/c or fans probably not good since those could lead to spreading virus through air. Someone posted a link on Covid Poitiics board about the spread of Covid in South Korea through an a/c fan in a Starbucks. Air movement does concern me to a degree as someone might cough/sneeze and the wind blowing it directly towards me.

Yeah and how am I supposed to know which retail/restaurant/etc place has ventilation with filtering or just regular a/c? This is moot for me because I don't go out in public except for groceries/essentials, so. It just adds to the list of reasons why I won't embrace a "new normal" in public yet.

I'm starting to get really nervous for winter. I'm the kind of person who has to leave my house every day just for sanity's sake and we have been fortunate since quarantine started to have beautiful temperate weather. I need to get used to going outside when it's miserably cold or I'm going to lose it.

We were talking about Christmas this weekend for some reason. We switch years between my side and my in-laws, we were trying to figure out whose year it was for each holiday. Then, I said that if someone got sick or had suspected exposure to Covid we would have to stay home and have it be just us. My H didn’t really say anything. I don’t think that thought had even crossed his mind. I said that was just how it would have to be, even though it sucks. He then did agree, but I know it’s going to be an issue, especially with his side. His parents are crazy about holidays and will expect us to be there. He will get such a guilt trip from them. Ugh. And then I started thinking how many families will get together no matter what and how many cases there will be in January.

I saw this in the WaPo this weekend and saved it to my phone as a handy reference for me to look at when weighing doing something new. Arrrgggh , I’m trying to find my peace in one of the only countries that doesn’t believe in masks — and trying to weave the 6 feet apart rule for the times when my job demands we all meet because we miss each other (I know). I would like to follow something like this in terms of safety, but this makes it very clear I am not even remotely safe. Tomorrow I have meetings with many different people, none of who have masks. But my kids are in school all day with no social distancing and the aftercare staff are the worst about keeping distance —whenever I ask them a question from afar in the classroom they come right on up to me to answer. so we are exposed on so many sides it seems inevitable. I am slowly coming to peace with the fact that our national Covid plan is that people like me should get it to build herd immunity (middle aged, relative low risk)— even if I completelY disagree with it you can only isolate in a normally functioning society for so long before you become truly isolated.

In our state, other than nursing homes, it’s large gatherings. Which I just can’t wrap my mind around. So basically if we paused those for a while, we could almost eliminate spread here. It’s upsetting. That is really interesting. Did they give examples of what is considered a large gathering? Is that a house party or indoor church service type things? No they didn’t, I’d like to know that as well. I know from MH’s friends that a lot of people have been getting it from weddings and funerals.

I've seen it, I just don't love being enclosed with maskless people. Maybe I'll get over it, maybe not. I haven’t done that either. And I don’t think a lot of people have. I assume it will hurt their business and I think (hope) they might get creative with their options come cold weather. MH and I had our first restaurant dinner on Friday and we were both highly uncomfortable even though everything was being done absolutely right. We’re just not used to it. But by the end of the meal we agreed we’d sit outside in peak Canadian winter if there were heat lamps, hot drinks, and wind sheilding of some sort while still allowing ventilation. I think our city is actually good at this already since we host a big winter festival that’s all outdoors in the worst month of the year, February. Maybe winter dining 2020 is our moment.

We've been doing well not spending too much money during the pandemic but NOW I have a long list of things I want to get, not to mention both cats need to go to the vet soon.

Question- does anyone have the most recent data/recommendation on when you should get tested after exposure? My parents fly here next Saturday. They have to show a negative test taken within 72 hours of flying (fx they get their results in time), but then once they land there is no official policy for quarantine or testing, because technically residents of the US are not supposed to be flying to Portugal. However, they'd like to get tested sometime after they land for extra peace of mind after being on a plane for 8 hours. I know that it can take up to 14 days to show symptoms, but when is it possible to turn a test? 5 days? 7 days? I am trying to get private testing scheduled for them. Some of the people I know that know or feel they know when they were exposed were sick rather quickly like within 3 days.
Of course this is just anecdotal information.

This is why in person just doesn't make sense to me. You're relying on people to be responsible, and they aren't. They just aren't. The argument of numbers being low in an area...yeah, but it takes exactly one. I keep thinking about how I was in HS in the 1990s during the height of the AIDS epidemic and the whole "you are having sex with every person your partner has had sex with" message was drilled into us. That's been my covid mindset. This has always been my mindset.
But no one else I know, LOL. To this day people still jumping on naked dick like it's not a thing.

I mean in my area they haven't disclosed any place or thing as causing any outbreaks. So I can't say it is or isn't gyms cause who am I supposed to be trusting to disclose that information. Same with restaurants etc. This would again fall into the relying on others to be responsible and properly disclose.
We are not doing contact tracing so I wouldn't trust what they said about it anyway.
(I am speaking to my area and my feelings as seen by the use of I.)

I’ve never liked eating in a restaurant pre Covid so now it’s like not even on my radar. This is us.
I never realized how much of a thing it was until now. All the "back to normal" comments. We don't feel like life has changed very much for us personally. We took the kids out of sports and that was about it.

Same. Our biggest change has been having groceries delivered or planning our shopping to go first thing when the stores open. Otherwise not much has changed for us, we were homebodies to begin with!

We are not doing contact tracing so I wouldn't trust what they said about it anyway. (I am speaking to my area and my feelings as seen by the use of I.) They are doing SOME contact tracing here - not nearly enough. But what they do say on the news is a big source of spread is small to medium gatherings with comfortable people (I.e. close family or friends) so people are relaxed and not practicing any social distancing. We don’t have indoor dining or gyms open right now (gyms and retail were open for a couple weeks but closed back down) so there’s no way to know that here. They had our main downtown street closed on weekends so that restaurants could set up in the parking spaces and there was still room to social distance. But they just voted to reverse that because the crowds of people and lack of masks is out of control. They haven’t said if anyone got it from that way but given that our city numbers have increased since they did that, I’m thinking that’s plausible. I don’t know what our restaurants are going to do here in the rainy season. Most are small so with proper distancing they could have like 4-5 tables inside. I guess take out it is. Which is going well according to a couple restaurant owners I’ve spoke to. 🤞🏼 But I agree, I think it’s relying on very scattered information and it doesn’t really help me make any decisions.

DD1s teacher sent a note that said their “learning space” shouldn’t be in their bedrooms. Like what do you want from me? I have a husband that works in our office, a three year old running around and two remote school kids that need separate spaces. The basement has all their toys, and I can’t set up my dining room or kitchen with all the supplies they need.
I’m already annoyed. There were a lot of other things she said that rubbed me the wrong way, so this should be fun.
ETA. I don’t know if it’s about distractions, but their bedrooms are the least distracting places in the house. No toys or fun stuff, just a bed, a desk and books.
