Preschool said they will do only in person learning all year, no virtual. No masks required. I feel like they are on their way to an outbreak but we’ll see. You think? Kids have been in daycare without them and have largely been OK. I just don't think preschoolers wearing masks all day is practical or realistic. A kid like C would probably be fine, but she's mature for her age. A 2 y.o.? No.

But yes, I don’t think the 2.5 year old class would be able to wear masks.

Parents have to wear them for drop off/pick up and we can't go in the rooms--hand-off will be outside (classrooms open onto exterior corridors). Our preschool ran camps all summer, which I think was good b/c it gave them a chance to finalize and refine their Covid practices/policies. Everyone emerged unscathed so I feel pretty good. Obviously no guarantees but fingers crossed!

Drop off is same as normal, meaning we wait in the crowded hallway outside of the classrooms until the teachers open the doors. I will just stay in my car until 2 minutes after the doors open to let the hallways clear a bit and I’ll be wearing a mask. The teachers will temp them every morning at least. They also said they won’t let everyone know if someone is covid positive, just the class they’re in.

wineallthetime, our school is breaking up the year into trimesters also. When the principal started talking about the “trimester” I thought for sure she had misspoken. 😆

Our schools said contact tracing and quarantine requirements are left up to the local health department during times of pandemic. The school will provide a class list and bus list to the health department and they will do the contact tracing from there. Everyone in the building will be notified of cases like we are in situations of lice, chicken pox, whooping cough etc by the school and close contacts will be contacted directly by the health department. They aren’t saying a case necessarily requires quarantine though since we will be all masked and socially distanced.
I also told MH none of us better catch a single case of anything this year with the requirements our schools have.

That’s such a different thing. I remember a few colleges back in the day doing it but I always thought k-12 schools were on a quarterly basis.

If someone in the building has a positive covid test then the school will send a letter. If my kid is a suspected close contact then we get an additional letter plus a call from the DOH.

So far the plan is to break the first day of school in half: so H will go on the 27th with half of her class, have the 28th off and then everyone will go on the 30th. They will do full, in person learning until I hear otherwise. All 1st graders will get an iPad assigned to them, which will be very nice for when we inevitably end up virtual. Mask are not required but “expected”. Preschool said they will do only in person learning all year, no virtual. No masks required. I feel like they are on their way to an outbreak but we’ll see. B has been in DC for about 6 weeks. Masks are mandatory in hallways but optional in classroom. From the pictures, it looks like about 1/2 the kids wear them during class. Knock on wood, but no outbreaks. We were in the worst area in the spring, but now our numbers are good, which is why I chose to send him, but it's making me feel confident. Edit --I read further. Teachers wear masks at all time and parents wear masks at drop off/pick up. Like flamingo we are not allowed in the building.

They said 2nd grade and younger can wear face shields or masks, but I feel like with Cadence's glasses she would prefer the mask.
They have the iPads ready for pick up later this month.

Our district is doing weekly youtube conferences to answer questions that have to be submitted in advance. The one tonight let us know of a pick up policy change to encourage more parents to not use the bus. Previously, you had to park, go in, sign in and show ID, get your ticket, wait in the cafeteria until the hell rang, let all bussing kids leave and then find your kid and give your matching tickets to the teacher to get them. Now they are doing it curbside and parents won't exit the vehicle! I'm stoked. I was not looking forward to lugging j and mj inside everytime but was going to because I work from home and can. That way there were more bus spots for other kids who's parents aren't able.

peachsmama we have a sign we put in our windshield with our kid's name and they call your kid over a walkie talkie. Each grade has a different exit door. I like it. It's super quick.

Apparently they did this years ago, idk why they stopped. Our whole parking lot is set up for it. I just hope it sticks post pandemic.

Growing up my elementary school was on a trimester system, but middle/high school was divided into quarters/semesters. I think they’re all on the semester schedule now.

For parents who don't want to get out of their cars, they have a sign with the last name in the front and the teacher walks the student to the car. When myself, and her grandmas took and picked her up, we just park in the lot, walk up and wait for the kids to come out, teachers see us and acknowledge, then the kids go to their pick up person. I'm sure Evie's teacher hated me at first since there were 3 different grandmas that picked her up, and randomly H or I would! since I'm working from home indefinitely, I'll be doing drop off and pick up.

Our school you can do curbside pickup for the first 20 minutes or when the car line ends whichever happens last. After that you have to go in and sign your kid out.
L’s going to go to his school’s summer camp starting this Friday. So I’ll get to see and hear how well they do distance learning.

We don’t have a pick up system yet. They were going to stay with the traditional way which is all of the parents waiting outside in the courtyard and then bum rushing the cafeteria doors to sign out and collect their children but one of the parents pointed out, during the q and a, that with the administration asking parents to consider driving instead of taking the bus that it would be a giant crowd each day.

No buses here and 90% of the parents do drop offs/pick ups by bike. Classes are divided in three for drop off and pick up times, a TA brings the groups of kids to the gate and checks if parents are there before letting the kids walk out of the gate, no lingering on school grounds.

That old plan sounds like an inefficient nightmare peachsmama. I can't imagine how they came up with that. Glad it changed. Is it a really small school? That wouldn't even be possible at my kids' school with 550 students.

Both, loads of cargo bikes, bikes with seats etc. From age 6+ a lot of kids ride their own bikes to school accompanied by parent. Starting 6th grade kids will start riding on their own. Our school is a relatively new school, so the oldest group is 4th at the moment.

I opted out of bussing for the year, which I’m selfishly bummed about it. But they want to busses to run at 50% and i have no good excuse not to do drop off and pickup. N was sad when I told her she wouldn’t be riding the bus, but got over it when i told her it was just that much less time she has to wear a mask.
I really hope they streamline the pickup process. We have to go in to the lobby and check in. K parents go to the classrooms, 1st Grade parents wait in the lobby for kids to come out. It’s a zoo.

I only picked up H from school one time last year and I’m pretty sure they just let the kids look for their parents car and go. Can’t remember for sure.
