I grew up in Queens and referred to Westchester as upstate. 🤷🏻♀️ Truly. Never heard it. My brother lives in LIC and taunts me that I’m raising suburban kids, which is apparently an insult. Maybe it's regional within NYC?

yummeecookee, thanks! Yeah I have read about the fights - we don't really have intentions on being on the boardwalk much, maybe just a little bit in the early morning.

Hiya, Philly suburbs here. Everyone on the local "mommy" FB group is freaking out about kids wearing masks to school, partly bc some schools don't have A/C. I wear one at work anytime I'm not in my office with the door closed and I've become desensitized to it, and my 4 year old happily puts one on to go out (mostly because she desperately wants to get out of the house), but does not wear one at her preschool/daycare (although all adults do). I haven't heard anything different from the school director since the expanded mask mandate came out. Have to say I was a little sad she missed the cutoff for Kindergarten this Fall, but I'm not sad about it any more. Navigating whatever they end up doing sounds like a nightmare.

NJ Suburbs of NY weighing in on the Westchester debate. I have never heard of that area as anything other than NY Suburbs.

Only because I went to college with a lot of NYC and LI kids and I heard that a lot. I'm obviously not from downstate so it's just my hear say. Not science by any means. We’re closer to the city than LI. I giggled at this, sorry. When i inspected one of a NYC university’s satellite facilities last year, my gps tried to bring me through NYC to get from rockland to westchester 😂

Truly. Never heard it. My brother lives in LIC and taunts me that I’m raising suburban kids, which is apparently an insult. Maybe it's regional within NYC? Maybe? I think it’s prob said when people are trying to be obnoxious to Westchesters. I never heard it in all my years living there. When we moved, we moved to the suburbs. My ils are from Brooklyn, when they moved, they moved to the suburbs. I’m still in all the NYC mom FB groups and if you ask for recs for upstate, people think you mean the lake/skiing area. If you ask for recs for the suburbs, it’s known as Westchester/LI/NJ. If you asked for recs for upstate and you meant Scarsdale, people would be very confused. Truly, I did real estate law in NYC and dealt with all the silly names people called places in the area (Rambo, SpaHa) and upstate meant Catskills, Albany, never once was it Westchester. I think it’s more like the snobby geographically things NYers say when they’re putting people down (“we don’t do boroughs” “it’s not real Hamptons unless it’s south of the highway.”) and obviously it’s working because I’m writing a goddamn essay about it! Lol.

It was more like our world was just small.

Central PA checking in (south of Penn State). I don't have too many posts and mostly lurk, but hope you guys don't mind if I participate. We are in the green phase where mostly everything is allowed with capacity limits/restrictions. There are approximately 8 active Covid-19 cases in my county; the rest are in our large state prison, where we had an outbreak in May but that has been contained and our numbers have been steady. There are a lot of anti mask assholes here though; and we have a lake which is a big camping destination in the summer so I am concerned about people from other counties with more cases coming here and infecting people - however, we're already into July and people have been coming in since Memorial Day weekend so I guess that hasn't really happened yet. Fingers crossed we continue to see few cases. We have been seeing our parents and our friend group of 3 other couples and their kids, but that is about it. Our public pool is open as well as the beaches at the lake, so I've been taking my almost 4 year old DS frequently. I don't know if anyone here feels the same, but I kinda feel like I need to do all the things right now in case we get locked down more severely again. My H and I did do indoor dining and a drink at a bar once(about 10 days ago) and while it seemed safe, I felt a lot of anxiety afterward so we'll probably just stick to backyard stuff and outdoor dining for the foreseeable future. We are also supposed to go to OCMD at the end of July (booked before Covid happened- I'm OK if we have to cancel it but we've just been playing it by ear) with H's family. I'm not sure how I feel about it. Has anyone else been there and what was your experience? We will be in a condo (near 30th street, so not the super crowded end of the boardwalk) and try to distance as much as possible; I don't know what restaurants are like down there right now but I can't imagine we would want to do indoor dining with 3 kids with us anyway. We usually stay in West Ocean City and drive to the beach at Assateague Island. It’s always far less crowded. Maybe you all could do that one day. Or drive North to Fenwick Island state park? I’ve heard about risky nightlife behavior and lots of people with no masks in the crowded part of the boardwalk, but I think if you stay to the north part of OCMD and stick with take out, you’ll be low risk.

Hello, I'm in western PA- practically OH, really. Our case count has been low and had no new cases for awhile but some new ones are popping up- probably due to the Pittsburgh area which is nearby and has a lot of new cases. We don't really go anywhere but most people are masking in the stores (we do have a mandate but it's red AF around here so, some people don't give a shit).

The westchester as upstate and SI as New Jersey stuff is definitely just an opportunity for New Yorkers to be assholes. That being said I refer to Westchester as Westchester or upstate and New Jersey as New Jersey. Never have I used the term “New York suburbs” And I don’t recall a time I’ve ever referred to Staten Island. Is that better or worse than calling it NJ? *raised by New York Expats in New England. Lived in the city for about 8 years if we’re tracking demographics. And I’m going to feel like a real jerk if my friend group are the only ones who do the SI/NJ thing, it’s definitely not as widespread but in the same line of asshole behavior. I've definitely never called SI anything other than Staten Island. I mean we might have called it smelly, but not New Jersey.

My apologies for bringing up the upstate vs downstate thing here. I've only ever lived in truly upstate areas (CNY, FLX, and now ROC) so I will mind my business, lol.

I've gotten in trouble for referring to Rochester as upstate - he insisted it should be called Western NY. My husband grew up in the Finger Lakes region and refers to it as upstate so I was very confused.

8 pages in 15 hours? Guess I'm just jumping in on page 8 then.
Another CT-resident here. Currently on day 9 of a 14 day quarantine because CA was added to the travel restrictions list the day DS2 and I flew home from his allergy appointment in Cali.

Popping in here! I live in CT but am spending most of the summer in RI at the beach. I feel like both states have done a pretty good job - numbers look good in both areas. I have yet to see people without masks in either location, expect when social distancing. My husband is a principal in CT and each day is endless hours of re-opening planning. I work in the same district as a special education teacher, and the planning is a legit nightmare. Things are changing by the minute, so who knows what school will actually look like come September 🤷♀️.

Apparently Norwalk, CT was having small, in-person summer school classes. They lasted a single day and now everyone involved is in quarantine due to exposure. Sigh... I know it's to be expected but I would love to see the kids be able to have in-person classes for at least a month or two before cold and flu season starts in earnest. At least our parks and rec camp has been running now for a couple weeks without incident. The kids are signed up for next week and the following week. Not sure who is more excited about them going at this point... I'm interested to know the details of what their procedure was like. DD is on her 4th day and so far so good. hi, fairfield county here, so i can answer this in detail-- one individual (not sure if it was a staff member or a student) tested positive at one of the high schools in norwalk. they did contact tracing, asked those in contact to quarantine, and closed just that school for the rest of the week for cleaning. the other schools are still running summer school. i believe elementary schoolers are doing in person classes and the older kids are doing a hybrid model.
they are taking all the standard precautions- temperature checks, face masks for everyone, limited class size, desks spaced 6 feet apart, alternate seating on buses, frequent handwashing, etc.
my kids have been back in f/t daycare/camp for the last month and so far so good. i am really hoping that we can keep the numbers down so we can have in-person school in the fall. i just don't get how a hybrid model is possible for parents who work f/t.

joey I don’t think it’s a proper name “NY suburbs”. But if you ask where your kid is going to camp and you say suburbs, you mean Westchester. If you say upstate, you mean Lake George. Same in conversations about where you should go apple picking, move to, etc. I don’t imagine if you live in New England you’re going to say it but if you’re in NYC, suburbs refer to Westchester/LI/NJ I just searched this on my local NYC mom group and there’s literally thousands of pages like this. Upstate turns up lake house rentals.

Oh and we have a vacation coming up in Maine that we've decided to keep. We're renting a house and the beach we went to last year was empty enough that there was plenty of room for social distancing. MH cooked all our meals at the house last year so we'll be able to distance from people except for grocery shopping and maybe a trip for take out ice cream.
I was pretty excited when Maine decided to lift the quarantine/testing requirement for CT residents.

Question... person A is around person B. Then person B finds out person C who they saw recently had a possible exposure, what does person A do? Like a potential exposure to a potential exposure? Is that too far removed to worry as of yet? Both person B and person C are getting tested through their job. Does person A just kinda lay low until those results come back or should person A get tested too?

If person B tests positive then person A needs testing and to tell everyone they have been in contact with from exposure to positive test that there was a positive test, but in all reality the likelihood of transmission that far removed is extremely low
