I'm going to start calling it LIRR phonetically just to mess with people now, but I draw the line at calling Westchester upstate.

Central PA checking in (south of Penn State). I don't have too many posts and mostly lurk, but hope you guys don't mind if I participate. We are in the green phase where mostly everything is allowed with capacity limits/restrictions. There are approximately 8 active Covid-19 cases in my county; the rest are in our large state prison, where we had an outbreak in May but that has been contained and our numbers have been steady. There are a lot of anti mask assholes here though; and we have a lake which is a big camping destination in the summer so I am concerned about people from other counties with more cases coming here and infecting people - however, we're already into July and people have been coming in since Memorial Day weekend so I guess that hasn't really happened yet. Fingers crossed we continue to see few cases. We have been seeing our parents and our friend group of 3 other couples and their kids, but that is about it. Our public pool is open as well as the beaches at the lake, so I've been taking my almost 4 year old DS frequently. I don't know if anyone here feels the same, but I kinda feel like I need to do all the things right now in case we get locked down more severely again. My H and I did do indoor dining and a drink at a bar once(about 10 days ago) and while it seemed safe, I felt a lot of anxiety afterward so we'll probably just stick to backyard stuff and outdoor dining for the foreseeable future. We are also supposed to go to OCMD at the end of July (booked before Covid happened- I'm OK if we have to cancel it but we've just been playing it by ear) with H's family. I'm not sure how I feel about it. Has anyone else been there and what was your experience? We will be in a condo (near 30th street, so not the super crowded end of the boardwalk) and try to distance as much as possible; I don't know what restaurants are like down there right now but I can't imagine we would want to do indoor dining with 3 kids with us anyway. H and I went to OcMD last week for dinner and some drinks. Its crowded. We went to 2 outdoor restaurants and they were very strict about seating and masks. However, the beaches, boardwalk, and streets are crowded with maskless people.

Question... person A is around person B. Then person B finds out person C who they saw recently had a possible exposure, what does person A do? Like a potential exposure to a potential exposure? Is that too far removed to worry as of yet? Both person B and person C are getting tested through their job. Does person A just kinda lay low until those results come back or should person A get tested too? Too far removed- but still be cautious just in case. If person B tests positive then person A needs testing and to tell everyone they have been in contact with from exposure to positive test that there was a positive test, but in all reality the likelihood of transmission that far removed is extremely low Okay thank you! That's what I thought but needed to hear it somewhere else

Does NY have any restrictions on foreign travel as far as a quarantine goes? There’s a child at our daycare that the parents are going to Jamaica next week and I’m not thrilled with the kid being allowed back without a quarantine.

The westchester as upstate and SI as New Jersey stuff is definitely just an opportunity for New Yorkers to be assholes. That being said I refer to Westchester as Westchester or upstate and New Jersey as New Jersey. Never have I used the term “New York suburbs” And I don’t recall a time I’ve ever referred to Staten Island. Is that better or worse than calling it NJ? *raised by New York Expats in New England. Lived in the city for about 8 years if we’re tracking demographics. And I’m going to feel like a real jerk if my friend group are the only ones who do the SI/NJ thing, it’s definitely not as widespread but in the same line of asshole behavior. 😑 But really that’s exactly why SI is considered the forgotten borough. We get shit on at every turn. Sometimes we deserve itand I admit that. However there are some really good things about here that most people don’t know. The conversations always go: “so where are you from?” I say “SI” and the response is always “I’m sorry.” I just sort of deal with being shit on always and enjoy my time here. 🤷🏻♀️ ETA: to be clear, I don’t think you are crapping on my town but the New Jersey thing usually brings up the “I hate SI” feels in most people.

piratecat, actually- my joining this campaign might hurt it since I'm not a native. I've only been here for 6 years and people would probably be like "Yea- this is what happens when transplants move in" so instead I'm going to try to convince MH who is a NYer to start calling it the lerr. This will be fun in so many ways

Cher, I think Cuomo has been great. I think NJ has done ok, mostly b/c I feel like we are just copying off of NY's paper. NY, CT and NJ said that they were all going to work together and use the same plan. I thought PA was part of that cohort but turns out Wolf is ...lone. Hehe.

There’s a child at our daycare that the parents are going to Jamaica next week and I’m not thrilled with the kid being allowed back without a quarantine. NY has stated that if anyone travels outside of NY they need to quarantine for 14 days when they arrive at their destination, and if they are traveling back they advise a 14 day quarantine but it's not mandated unless there are other aspects (stopping in a state that is on the mandated quarantine list etc) If they're traveling private plane or private boat to Jamaica it should be fine- the cases there are low. I have to admit I'm a bit surprised Jamaica is allowing people in from the US

Ugh I just read a news article about a daycare in Onondaga county that 16 people are sick from because a mom was tested and didn’t stay home until she got her results. Now I’m freaking out about my kids being in daycare. The mom who was sick and not isolating infuriates me. From the article it sounds like the day care provider was doing everything she could to keep the kids and everyone safe.

I sent DD back to daycare last week on the first day they reopened. They are taking everything very seriously and have put many precautions in place. I know that this is not risk free, but the reward has been worth it. She is thriving. I like my kid again! And my husband, and my house and my job! I am furloughed on Fridays and I go hiking! I can get a quick run or work out in when I want, and I can make healthier meals. I no longer work until 9-10pm because I couldn't put in a full day while parenting DD. This time of life has really crystallized a few things for me: I enjoy my career more than I enjoy being a full time stay at home parent, and I'm not going to be sorry about that anymore. I am good at my job and it takes a lot of time and energy. On the flip side, a lot of my very driven work ethic was performative and I"m learning how to be more flexible. Work from home is working (for my employees and me.) It's ok to take an afternoon off and do something with your kid and enjoy it. Being in a chair at 9am on the dot is not necessarily the best indicator of productivity. I promised my team that I will bring this new found flexibility forward with me when we all get back to normal and they literally clapped. Anyway, TLDR: if you need to send your kids back to daycare, don't feel bad. They will thrive and you will thrive. I sent my boys back June 1 and it was the best decision. Everyone is happier. They're learning instead of stupid amounts of screen time in order for me to get my work done. DS2 will be 2 in September and within a week of being back he was saying at least 5 new words regularly. I cannot wait for our quarantine to be over next week so they can go back again.

Okay, so... LIRR is said L-I-R-R? Not Ler?
I NYC very badly so I rely on others. Those others called it Ler and I’m all confused. They were from Westchester, though.
Look, we all took it to nearly die in pushing crowds to see Smarty Jones lose the Triple Crown and my Philly heart is still a little broken. Just gently tell me the right way to say it.
