For sure. It’s the wild west once you pass Amsterdam 😂 Well downstaters/NYC/LI think Westchester is upstate. We can have this fight. My body is ready. I never get when people say that on this board, NYCers most def don’t think Westchester is upstate. They say we’re “the suburbs”.

My buddy in FL has been laughing at us for weeks/months now saying things like "I can't believe you guys don't have restaurants open yet, that's ridiculous, it's fine down here, we can do everything" and this and that. Cut to our numbers compared to FL right now...
But yes, since you mentioned taxes in the OP, I'm annoyed. We refinanced to get a stellar rate last week and our appraisal came in a tad lower than we expected. So I called my tax assessor and said you guys are assessing us on $X but I have an appraisal here saying it's worth 25k less than that. I want my taxes reduced. And she gave me this big fucking run around about how their assessment is based off average value of the past 2 years. My appraisal means nothing because it's only a snapshot of "today" and their value is much more in depth analysis over time so I would need an appraisal from the past 2 years in a row to show that it was lower over that time period. I'm like are you fucking kidding me, this is robbery.

Ugh I just read a news article about a daycare in Onondaga county that 16 people are sick from because a mom was tested and didn’t stay home until she got her results. Now I’m freaking out about my kids being in daycare.

I’m in Philly. My neighborhood is just as active as ever (with masks) but I haven’t walked into Center City since March. My daughter went back to daycare on Monday. The city is so oddly quiet that we’re driving there (City Hall area) to Drop off/pick up. Parking is easy. These are crazy times. Masks are encouraged. My three year, who was a solid “absolutely not,” wears her mask indoors. Never underestimate peer pressure and kindness. ❤️ Same with my very stubborn almost 4 year old. He has to wear one in the common areas of day care but not his classroom or outside. He was very opposed to it the first morning and they didn't push it. He came running out at pick up so happy to show me he was wearing his mask and has been wearing it ever since. If he can do it, anyone can. *Any adult, I mean.

I think at least some of them are citing ADA. [br I read something about masks not being covered under ADA because it’s not a reasonable accommodation. It’s a serious public health issue and therefore not covered. (Not saying you think it is just adding what I’ve read about it) And if a person truly can’t wear a mask due to a disability, there are other reasonable accommodations that can be made. The most obvious is that an employee can shop for them.

Now I’m freaking out about my kids being in daycare. Don’t freak out. There’s been very few daycare outbreaks. You’re making the best decision for your family. Whenever I get nervous, I remember that medical article I posted in the OG Coronavirus thread about riding the wave. The experts recommended opening some things up and continuing to open things up as numbers stayed reasonable. It said outbreaks will happen and numbers will go up, but when that happens, we slow down on openings, or put in more restrictions. I think the NE (especially Cuomo) has been really good about that. When these things happen, it’s scary but I think it affects his decisions or standards in the future for similar businesses.

I think my city’s council on aging is helping seniors with groceries and stuff so I hope they are helping the disabled as well (senior housing and disabled housing is the same building here).

Do you guys all have the slogan "if you have to ask, wear a mask" or is that a CT thing? Has anyone from Maryland seen the “Wear a Mask, Hon” highway signs? I laughed. “Hon” is very Baltimore.

Cher, I think Cuomo has been great. I think NJ has done ok, mostly b/c I feel like we are just copying off of NY's paper. As to Day care, I struggled so much about what to do, because I am home. I am working from home, but not busy. But ultimately, after all the stress and back and forth with this decision, I am confident it was best for us. My kid NEEDED that outside stimulus. I am confident in the school, and he is thriving. And I am keeping my eyes on the numbers both in my town and the surrounding areas, and if they start to climb to a level I am not comfortable with, I have the luxury that I can pull him. I am thankful that I could get him in now, while we are in a relatively good spot. I think I mentioned, but my older son (6.5) started Baseball this week and the coaches and all the parents have to be masked. I felt good about it and my kid was so happy to resume some normalcy.

Apparently Norwalk, CT was having small, in-person summer school classes. They lasted a single day and now everyone involved is in quarantine due to exposure. Sigh... I know it's to be expected but I would love to see the kids be able to have in-person classes for at least a month or two before cold and flu season starts in earnest.
At least our parks and rec camp has been running now for a couple weeks without incident. The kids are signed up for next week and the following week. Not sure who is more excited about them going at this point...

I grew up in Brooklyn and we moved “upstate” to Rockland County. A whole 18 miles north of the George Washington bridge. My stereotypical Brooklyn/Long Island family calls the Hudson Valley (Starting with Rockland) upstate. Joke was on me when I traveled another 360 miles northwest to college. Now that was upstate. My family considers that Canada probably.

I’ve only seen it said on this board a handful of times but I lived in the city (and LI) for 15+ years and I never heard the upstate reference IRL. Always “the suburbs”. I’m not doubting you because LI kids can be dbags (sorry kmkd). Now Brewster? That shit is upstate.

It’s a serious public health issue and therefore not covered. (Not saying you think it is just adding what I’ve read about it) Our state CDC director said there are very few medical conditions that would legitimately prevent you from wearing a mask and I wonder if all the lawsuits are actually relevant in that sense. You need to prove disability to get a tag to be able to park in handicap parking spots and you would think those with legitimate medical conditions could get a doctor’s note to exempt them.

So there are rumors circulating FB about our schools. We are a huge district and have lost a ton of funding over the years. Anyway the rumors are the WORST possible hybrid model ever.
Like there are bad. And then there is ours. (Again rumor-so I hope it isn’t true)
Pretty much the students will be divided into 3 groups. They will go to school for 4 hours every 3 days. So Week 1 would be (for kids in group A) Monday/Thursday. Week 2: Tuesday/Friday. Week 3: Wednesday.

jewels, my kids are 1000% times better off at summer camp as well, despite me WFH. They were so miserable during the SIP. I saw a lot more acting out and behaviors, which I had just chalked up to them not knowing how to handle all the emotions of what was going on. They are much happier now w real routines, seeing other kids, and more stimulation.

Central PA checking in (south of Penn State). I don't have too many posts and mostly lurk, but hope you guys don't mind if I participate.
We are in the green phase where mostly everything is allowed with capacity limits/restrictions. There are approximately 8 active Covid-19 cases in my county; the rest are in our large state prison, where we had an outbreak in May but that has been contained and our numbers have been steady.
There are a lot of anti mask assholes here though; and we have a lake which is a big camping destination in the summer so I am concerned about people from other counties with more cases coming here and infecting people - however, we're already into July and people have been coming in since Memorial Day weekend so I guess that hasn't really happened yet. Fingers crossed we continue to see few cases.
We have been seeing our parents and our friend group of 3 other couples and their kids, but that is about it. Our public pool is open as well as the beaches at the lake, so I've been taking my almost 4 year old DS frequently. I don't know if anyone here feels the same, but I kinda feel like I need to do all the things right now in case we get locked down more severely again. My H and I did do indoor dining and a drink at a bar once(about 10 days ago) and while it seemed safe, I felt a lot of anxiety afterward so we'll probably just stick to backyard stuff and outdoor dining for the foreseeable future.
We are also supposed to go to OCMD at the end of July (booked before Covid happened- I'm OK if we have to cancel it but we've just been playing it by ear) with H's family. I'm not sure how I feel about it. Has anyone else been there and what was your experience? We will be in a condo (near 30th street, so not the super crowded end of the boardwalk) and try to distance as much as possible; I don't know what restaurants are like down there right now but I can't imagine we would want to do indoor dining with 3 kids with us anyway.

beerlover, I would def stay far away from the boardwalk if you go. I’ve been seeing quite a few news stories of how crowded it is as well as ppl getting out of hand, fighting etc (???). Just enjoying the beach would probably be fine.

I sent DD back to daycare last week on the first day they reopened. They are taking everything very seriously and have put many precautions in place. I know that this is not risk free, but the reward has been worth it. She is thriving. I like my kid again! And my husband, and my house and my job! I am furloughed on Fridays and I go hiking! I can get a quick run or work out in when I want, and I can make healthier meals. I no longer work until 9-10pm because I couldn't put in a full day while parenting DD.
This time of life has really crystallized a few things for me: I enjoy my career more than I enjoy being a full time stay at home parent, and I'm not going to be sorry about that anymore. I am good at my job and it takes a lot of time and energy. On the flip side, a lot of my very driven work ethic was performative and I"m learning how to be more flexible. Work from home is working (for my employees and me.) It's ok to take an afternoon off and do something with your kid and enjoy it. Being in a chair at 9am on the dot is not necessarily the best indicator of productivity. I promised my team that I will bring this new found flexibility forward with me when we all get back to normal and they literally clapped.
Anyway, TLDR: if you need to send your kids back to daycare, don't feel bad. They will thrive and you will thrive.
