But, most people saw the headline and freaked out and won’t look any further now. Like my educated, nurse sister, who is freaking out because she HAD to have J&J, and now this. Who will now probably create Facebook drama and either directly or indirectly cast doubt in the minds of people who were on the fence about being by vaccinated. This is exactly my concern. So many people are going to feel vindicated "see - I knew these vaccines were rushed! I'm not letting them near me with that shot!!!" When in reality the risk is beyond miniscule. But those people won't read the actual science.

Cuomo said today we have enough pfizer to keep on schedule with a temporary pause on J&J. He fully intends on resuming with J&J once the CDC gives the ok

cmb am I reading the cdc map right that all but 2 counties in NY are considered high rate of transmission? If that’s the case how can any of the schools really make changes since it says the 6 ft has to be maintained?

I'm really curious about the SUNY schools now too. They were pumping j&j for the students, hoping to mass vax them all before summer break. That's a big wrench there too. UofA is getting the county’s pfizer allotment to replace them for this week- they had not scheduled a regular county pod and were focusing on schools this week. I’m not sure if other counties will follow suit. Brockport started J&J shots on their students this week, so there was probably already a small subset of kids who got it yesterday prior to today's pause announcement. Hopefully they can get more vaccines for the rest of the students.

So basically districts that weren't yet full time elementary can resume, but secondary is SOL.

Based on the meeting I listened to tonight, K-5 seems the easiest to cohort, 6 is taking a little bit of schedule changing to make happen, but 7-12 is near impossible.

Our district just voted to go back full time next week. Currently elementary is 4 days and middle and high school is hybrid
In the same breath our school is closed the rest of the week for an outbreak and the board meeting where this vote happened was all virtual because some board members are in quarantine.
I have mixed feelings to say the least.

There’s a handful in the moderate-substantial category, which gives more wiggle room on 7-12 with not cohorting. We are down to #6 in the per capita (per 100k) cases in the country. We were #3 days ago. I have been watching our raw numbers the last few weeks, and they finally seem to be declining. We need more people vaccinated My county pop up this week is only 25% full. It is so bad how they don’t advertise and wait until the last second to post them, but cuomo won’t let them plan until they are in hand

I finally became eligible to go get the shot this week and I couldn’t get in until mid May. So annoying. Stalking the pharmacy for openings.
Meanwhile, H signed up ten minutes before me and got next week.

Cher how does the Javits schedule 2nd appointments? The Aquaduct people told me to come back May 4 and that I would get an email in the next 24 hours with a time. I haven’t received any email yet. I am impatient and tried to schedule a second shot to see if it would let me, but there isn’t a record of my first shot. I assume this just takes time and I should just wait for an email.

I thought they made you cancel your appointment before trying to get a new one and am glad that’s not the case! So stressful.

This happened to me with a different state site. Give it another 24 hrs. You should get the info. It should be at the same time once the system updates your info

It should be the same time as your appt today. But I’ll give you a secret, you can pretty much come back anytime. They tell you within an hour of your appt, but city and Westchester will take you. If it’s super busy, they might have you step aside and wait for it to slow down (they did to me at Javits, I came 9 hours early 🤣) but don’t stress the time too much.

If you have friends or family in the metro NYC area that need appts, pm me. I know of a few places with a ton of appointments over the next week.

But now that we’re doing crazy numbers, if it’s busy, they just make you stand to the side until there’s a lull. Either way, if you show up that day, you’re getting vaxxed.

Sign up through your hospital system if possible. Thats what I did by recommendation of an area friend and it was pretty quick. I registered and did everything online. Then they sent me an email when dates became available and I scheduled through that.
I had shot in arm less than two weeks after registering. They are doing mass vaccinations in an area building, when I went they said they had 600 scheduled in 4 hours. I think thats why it was easier and quicker

Well all the school districts in the next county had to make the announcement today that 7-12 can’t go back like they planned. I feel horrible for the superintendents and board of Ed members dealing with the backlash. It’s like a mutiny. Especially since the positivity rate in that region according to NYS is the lowest in the state.

Especially since the positivity rate in that region according to NYS is the lowest in the state. Our local school district had to do the same. It’s not a great look because they seemed to drag their feet getting secondary back in general (no 7-12 kids went back in any capacity until March). The WORST part is someone goofed (I’m guessing) and announced it to the media before the parents had been issued any calls or emails 😬 so parents weren’t thrilled about learning about it on FB or tv

Especially since the positivity rate in that region according to NYS is the lowest in the state. Positivity rate alone isn’t a good indicator of spread though. If you test 10,000 out of a population of 1M and 500 come back positive, you have 5% positive but 50 per 100k. In an alternative scenario, if I test 20,000 with 500 positive, my positive rate drops to 2.5%, but my per capita stays the same and indicates high spread

Just got an email that there was a positive case in DS’ cohort. He has to stay remote for 2 weeks (despite CDC rec being shorter). And even with a negative test he can’t go back sooner. Very strict plane situation.

And this is why we can’t have nice things....a nearby county has over 300 school kids/teachers in quarantine because someone as symptomatic and traveled to a dance competition in the next county this weekend. Apparently the dance school had no Covid precautions in place. Who knows how large this is going to get.

It’s hit multiple districts.
