Oh, byjove, on the not leaving the room, it has been a total non issue. I was worried too, like he's just going to be STUCK but MY GOSH. They grab breakfast and eat in the room, and lunch is 50/50 room and cafeteria (no clue who goes where and for what reason), when there's not a fucking foot of snow on the ground they get plenty of mask breaks and recess outside, I mean, DS is just happy as a GD clam to BE THERE. So it's like, doesn't even matter that he's in the same place all day, as long as it's not our kitchen lol.

Exactly. I feel for you guys. We've gone back and forth (hybrid/virtual) and are now talking 4 days a week for next month. We've been lucky that there hasn't been a huge shortage of teachers (at least elementary, I know middle and high have had different openings). My 3rd grader is just DYING for the interaction and I just....ugh. I hate this for him. Thankfully DC has been fulltime so at least when he's in virtual, there's not a toddler running around. I just....I don't know how people are doing it?? How are parents working, providing childcare, helping w school, on and on. I know it's been a year now but the burnout is COMING if not already and something's gotta give. I hope they get teachers on the vaccine schedules soon in some of these countries because aren't they scheduling a protest or sit out or something on that in Ho? Oh hi, this is me in NOVA. This is our life. The schools are maybe going to reopen in a month for 2 days a week hybrid, but it sounds pretty awful ( kids won't leave room during the day) and they are doing concurrent teaching, so the kids in class will all be on laptops still and the teacher will be teaching online and in person kids together. Also, not all teachers will be in person, so if your kid is, their teacher might still be virtual. DD1 is in 2nd grade and getting desperate for kid interactions. We were last asked in December (when cases were terrible and vaccines still iffy) if we wanted to do hybrid- they were also saying kids weren't guaranteed teacher or even school for in person- and they were going to try and open in January, so we said virtual because all of that was crazy. But now they aren't letting you change, only hybrid to virtual. It's a giant mess and literally giving me heartburn. It's a mess. The burnout is so real. I feel rage at the school district, a lot. This is exactly how our school is, except it’s 4 days a week. And the specials teachers are all virtual (even if they’re in the school building) because they don’t want those teachers exposed to multiple cohorts. it really hasn’t been that bad. My kids have been happy. They’re grades 1 and 4.

The states can say 6’ or barriers but it’s not really up to the districts if there’s no funding for barriers or for extra teachers or whatever else they might need to open safely full time. Hopefully there will be more funds made available on a federal level for schools to open.

I’ve honestly thought about moving...but where in the region would I even go? Right?? I think if things don't open up for fall, people will just start leaving our district and go private, especially for the younger grades. I'm not really tapped into that scene, but I'm really curious if applications are up already. Idk. I feel trapped.

I’ve got an application in for the fall as a backup. Here in DC, the private school deadlines are up, but some have rolling admissions. I’d imagine they are getting a big spike. I’ve got a lot of feelings of guilt (and if I’m really live blogging a therapy appt, mild resentment towards H) about not taking a private school spot in the fall. I truly never considered private elementary school before. We were over the moon to be at our neighborhood school. DD loves her teachers.

My 2nd grader goes back in 2 weeks for 2 days a week hybrid after a full year out of school. When I think about the past year, I’m floored. His teacher has done an amazing job teaching virtually and H and I have been able to be very involved in making sure DS participates and does the work, but his SpEd services have been a mess. I feel like I’ve been swimming upstream all year trying to get him appropriate social skills services and fill in for the accommodations he would get at school in a virtual environment. He normally has an IA check in with him frequently at school to keep him on track because of his severe ADHD, but that doesn’t work in virtual world. So I’ve essentially become his para and spend my days reminding him to listen to his teacher, giving him reminders on directions, and getting him started on school work. It has only worked for us because I’m SAH. This was going to be the year I went back to work. Ha. Ha ha. Sob. And obligatory Fuck COVID.

Yes, we felt the same about our school- a dual language/immersion just down the street. We've absolutely loved it until now. DH's work also requires him to be in the field quite a bit, so I'm the one supervising most schooling while working, so I get the mild resentment too.

It's totally moot for us at this point because she won't be allowed back for hyrbid this school year. That is so frustrating. Ffx County let families change their choice in February. I think they expect about 2/3 of students to return at our neighborhood school. I don’t remember exactly how it came up earlier, but in our district, only teachers with ADA accommodations are allowed to teach virtually with a classroom monitor. They had to go through a very vigorous process to get that status and about 40% of teachers who initially applied for it were rejected, though some successfully appealed. Most teachers with high risk family members weren’t eligible for ADA accommodations. Many of those rejected chose to take LOAs and early retirement, which caused a staffing shortage that derailed the entire Return to School process in the district for months. This obviously may differ in other districts, but it ended up being a very complicated situation with no good options.

Yeah, extra frustrating because when we picked, we didn't know it would be binding. I think they also originally said we would be asked quarterly. About 60% of kids and about that % of teachers will go back. Though from what I've heard from our ES specifically, it is heavily skewed towards younger grades.

Schools are still 100% remote here. They tried to open hybrid in February (with littler kids going full time) and there is now a teacher shortage because of teachers who will not work in person. So they remain remote. Philadelphia also tried to open only to encounter massive protests from teachers who refused to return to in person until it is safe. I’m not stating a judgment in any of that, I’m just pointing out that it’s not cut and dry why schools can’t open. I have a lot of feelings about this as a Philadelphian but it boils down to thinly veiled rage at the ineptitude of the SDP for decades. Sending kids and teachers back into asbestos and lead filled buildings with "put a box fan in an open window" as your ventilation plan is fucked. But the kids are falling even further behind by not being in person, so we're just screwing over yet another generation of students.

It sucks I’m so sorry. I’ve honestly thought about moving...but where in the region would I even go? Come to me my dears. I’d say come to me, but our schools are in basically the same sitch. The ginormous school districts in the DMV region lack the flexibility and political consensus to move quickly on anything. 😭

So we have lots of 'main street' communities here but definitely not comparable to an actual city area/DC like. But in person school! We have that! And I just saw that the school board vote on 4 day a week is tomorrow, then it's gotta get approved by the state/Hogan so....wish us luck 🤞
