I think it’s kind of shitty to reduce it to optics, wine slushees, and butter when we’re trying to explain why it’s important to some people. And I think it's shitty that my points are also being dismissed because "not all districts" and #regional. So we can share that sentiment. You’re not being dismissed. People are trying to tell you, multiple times and ways, that you’re not the only person affected here. That it’s not just your area, or your family, or your job. People are actually bending over backwards to tell you they’re sorry that you’re suffering. I don’t know what else you want anyone to say.

Your issue is your school reopening, I get it. This is hard. But it’s a false equivalency to get angry about state-level decisions about the economy when schools aren’t being closed on the state level. Nobody is dismissing your frustrations, they’re just saying it’s district-level at this point, so that’s where you should focus your anger, not state decisions affecting small businesses

That's my point of frustration because that's the hang up for districts to be able to go back to five days a week. I do truly want businesses to be able to operate freely. I have seen friends and family suffer because of business shut downs. I have. I'm just tired of all of it.

But that’s what I said upthread, where the superintendents in my area said they were told directly by the state if less than 6 feet isn’t possible, plexiglass barriers suffice. So they are giving guidance to people about workarounds for the 6feet requirement. That’s why you need to contact your district.

Is the 6ft a guideline or must have? We just got a survey today to go back 4 days a week (9 to 1) and we had to answer if we had a problem if 6 ft could not be maintained.
We usually just follow ny which is why I'm asking.

Damn Canadians ::TIC glare:: In college in Boston my MA and CT friends would argue who RI "belonged" to. We are our own self! Hmph. Lollll Up north here our islands are generally actual islands but that’s cool. (We’re just mad bc we A: just learned that RI is not an actual island within the last year, and B: can’t travel there right now. It looks adorable and quaint.)

I will say, I’m thankful we are in a state that have had schools open since September. It’s wild to think in other parts of the country, some people haven’t even had the option of sending their kids back, even part-time. Well, then there is Buffalo who just now reopened hybrid. 🤨

Schools are still 100% remote here. They tried to open hybrid in February (with littler kids going full time) and there is now a teacher shortage because of teachers who will not work in person. So they remain remote.
Philadelphia also tried to open only to encounter massive protests from teachers who refused to return to in person until it is safe.
I’m not stating a judgment in any of that, I’m just pointing out that it’s not cut and dry why schools can’t open.

We usually just follow ny which is why I'm asking. Must be 6’ OR have barriers. This has always been the rule, but most schools do 6’ because the barriers are a cost barrier many districts cannot afford. I live in an affluent area, and we can’t afford over 5000 barriers. Even districts that are back 5 days a week aren’t all doing full day instruction.

In Maine and Mass it’s 3 ft masked no closer than 6 ft unmasked. My classroom is remote and in person simultaneously. The remote option has reduced the number of students in person and provided more physical space.
We have been open 5 days a week. Our guidelines come from the Maine CDC and the department of education. All school districts have local control so they decide what their protocols look like.
We used a huge portion of our COVID funds to replace our air filtration system. So many schools are in incredibly old buildings with poor ventilation. Many of my friends in Mass are teaching hybrid or remote because their buildings do not have proper ventilation and to upgrade it would be too expensive or physically impossible without doing major repair work.

It’s wild to think in other parts of the country, some people haven’t even had the option of sending their kids back, even part-time. Yep. The public schools in my county (MD) have been closed since last March. No hybrid; all remote. They’re supposed to open next month. We’ll see: they keep pushing the date back (was originally November). Thankfully my kids aren’t in our district school. I would not have survived if they weren’t back in school. Exactly. I feel for you guys. We've gone back and forth (hybrid/virtual) and are now talking 4 days a week for next month. We've been lucky that there hasn't been a huge shortage of teachers (at least elementary, I know middle and high have had different openings). My 3rd grader is just DYING for the interaction and I just....ugh. I hate this for him. Thankfully DC has been fulltime so at least when he's in virtual, there's not a toddler running around. I just....I don't know how people are doing it?? How are parents working, providing childcare, helping w school, on and on. I know it's been a year now but the burnout is COMING if not already and something's gotta give. I hope they get teachers on the vaccine schedules soon in some of these countries because aren't they scheduling a protest or sit out or something on that in Ho?

Most of the time (obviously not always the case), but in our schools it is pretty even split--like 10 in person and 12 on line or something. it usually isn't 5 in person and 20 on line. (Unless when almost a whole class was quarantined or something).
Problem is parents are using virtual as the "easy way" out---you missed the bus, you could be virtual.
They ordered dividers for our schools--what frustrates me is last year when teachers asked for them--so we could open full time, the board and super literally said "they don't work and impossible to clean, so we aren't doing them" But our district is a hot mess.
My one co worker, who I love hates how the district is literally telling her and almost forcing her to focus on the in person kids and not to bother as much with the virtual ones. (I mean not that extreme but they want her priority to be in person). She is pushing back on that one, because many of her virtual kids are virtual for a REALLY good reason and she refuses to have their education suffer because of it. She has literally begged the district to let her be a virtual only teacher (even coming into the building) so that they could get an education that they deserve. Nope. They won't change their stance.
Also, teachers in NJ are still not eligible for vaccines, which is a whole other issue.

This is our life. The schools are maybe going to reopen in a month for 2 days a week hybrid, but it sounds pretty awful (kids won't leave room during the day) and they are doing concurrent teaching, so the kids in class will all be on laptops still and the teacher will be teaching online and in person kids together. Also, not all teachers will be in person, so if your kid is, their teacher might still be virtual. DD1 is in 2nd grade and getting desperate for kid interactions. We were last asked in December (when cases were terrible and vaccines still iffy) if we wanted to do hybrid- they were also saying kids weren't guaranteed teacher or even school for in person- and they were going to try and open in January, so we said virtual because all of that was crazy. But now they aren't letting you change, only hybrid to virtual. It's a giant mess and literally giving me heartburn. It's a mess. The burnout is so real. I feel rage at the school district, a lot.

Our govenor said schools must be hybrid, but it is up to each district on how to do it. Other districts have the classes dived into groups so group A is Mon and Tues, cleaning on Wednesday and then group B is Th and Fri. In school in the morning and then all virtual in the afternoon. This schedule is to eliminate the need for eating lunch there.
Our district gave parents the option of in person vs virtual. In person is 5 days a week/regular hours. They have the teachers doing one or the other. The virtual staff can work from home, but there are usually more children on their list

Also, teachers in NJ are still not eligible for vaccines, which is a whole other issue. That is annoying that people are using virtual that way. Our district has a policy that you need to commit to a learning plan (distance or in person) for 4 weeks since it is such a disruption to the class. The exceptions are for sick days that the child is well enough to attend virtually. At the beginning we had people trying to go in and out so they established this rule. It has worked well for us but it sounds like your district is a mess overall.

Oh yea. Well DS's STEM teacher is doing the virtual thing and it just...pisses me off. Like I know he's doing what's right for his family, he has 3 kids, no clue what his SO does (ie works or SAH etc) BUT he's teaching from home and they have a sub in the classroom during the day to assist. Right now if you're a teacher, you can send your kids 4 days a week in person so I'm like....argh. but the I'm also like, ok, well he can make that choice, but still...ugh. The rest of his teachers, humanities and specials, do in classroom teaching with the laptop for the virtual kids and you know, it's not the best, but it's also not quite as bad as I was expecting. So....there's that.

byjove I feel you. The school situation in the DMV is just...so frustrating. DC schools are technically open, but at my kids elementary school, like a quarter of kids are actually getting in person instruction. Our chancellor and mayor seem content to chalk a “win” and move on, so parents have to lobby their individual schools to do any more reopening. Its just so exhausting. And I say this as a parent with a pretty motivated kid who is in a pod 5 days a week. Still, every day she asks when she can go back. Tells me how lucky I am that I didn’t have to go to computer school.
