I had to look up what 'wry' means, but it seems fitting.
How are all you lovely ladies?

In the ongoing Fridgegate 2019 saga...the assholes scheduled yesterday never called me. They were supposed to come back from Monday's appointment. I called them on my way to pick Evie up from school and they confirmed I was still on the schedule. I told them we had somewhere to be at 5:30 and she said 'oh, that may not work. They work until they're done.' You mean like the guy who was at my house all of 10 minutes Monday? She said she would contact the tech that was supposed to be out and call me right back.
I never heard back from them. Shocking.
So I contacted ANOTHER repair place who has me on the schedule today between 8 and noon. I'm glad my boss is understand and I have so much flexibility.
At this point, we could have just bought a new fridge Sunday and had it delivered by now. I'm annoyed with the entire situation.

M has meet the teacher tonight so I'll be leaving work early to pick her up. Why can't they schedule these things for after work?

Morning! The kids slept great, I had to wake them up at 9! Dd woke up around two and came to our bed, apparently that is her new normal, we’ll work on that once we’re fully settled back in. Had coffee with my mom and did groceries. I love that I still have a few days of before work & school starts up again.

I have a lot of friends who are teachers and I know they have lives and families too, but it's just really difficult for working parents to attend all these activities during the day.

Over 90% of our school district is low income and those parents have to work. Just like signing up for after school care inconvenienced all of the people that work, that need the after school care. My sister is a teacher. All of her parent orientations, parent/teacher conferences, etc are after 5. There are times I have to attend board meetings or conferences at night or on the weekends. It's part of the job. It doesn't have anything to do with being a parent.

I’m not defending this because I think it’s ridiculous, but teachers in my district only have to stay for a late nights when the contract calls for it – one night for meet the teacher, and one night for parent-teacher conferences. It would have to go to negotiations if they asked for a third day, and it probably would be voted down.

I get your frustration, as a teacher I have to take time off for my kid’s school stuff during the day and it sucks however, my contract requires me to do 2 nights of evening conferences a year and that’s it, so anything in addition to that is actually not part of the job. The real problem is America as a whole has not adapted to the fact that most families have 2 working parents now. I’m lucky MH’s job is much more family friendly than mine. He can go in late/leave early for family stuff and no one bats and eye. I’m not even allowed to use my sick time when my kids are sick so I actually have to fake my own illness to take care of them.

I have spoke with parents of older kids who say it's usually the day before school starts at like 2:00 which is also ridiculous for working parents. Not only is it in the middle of the day, but there's 0 advance notice. Most jobs need you to put in more than a few days ahead of time for time off!

I'm in a position that I can take extra time off from work if I need to. Most of the parents in my school district are not.

I think there are a lot of things that they could do to fix the situation. It requires thinking beyond “here’s what we always do, so let’s just do it again,” and a lot of school districts don’t seem to want to fully grow with the times.

Drop off was....stressful. We couldn't get her buckle undone, the "helper" was not helpful. When Cadence opened the car door the woman actually said, "oh, I didn't know there was a kid in the car." Uh, why the fuck would I be in a car drop off line at a school without a kid? So then Cadence got out of the car and started walking in, without her backpack or lunchbox. The helper had to grab it and get it to her and then she sent her on her way, but I don't know if Cadence knew what way that actually was. Last I saw my child she was hurrying through the doors. I'm hoping she made it to the cafeteria and to her teacher's table. She decided to take her lunch since the hamburger wasn't a cheeseburger.
MH was basically trying to be helpful, while actually making things harder this morning, so I may tell him to just not try any more. Cadence and I need to figure out our own morning groove.

This is why I don't do the drop off line, and I told the grandparents not to as well. Our dropoff/pickup line is cut throat. We park, then walk up to the front entrance and wait for the kids to come out. My mom was picking Evie up one day and talking to another mom who told her that she was helping her son get in his carseat and was apparently taking too long. Some woman came up and knocked on her window and told her she was taking too long and needed to get out of the line. I'd have punched her in the face.

Luckily I'll only be doing the pick up line once a week and the kindergartners are picked up in a separate area than the others. If I were to park to drop off I would be having to park like 2 blocks away and walk each morning, which we don't have time for. I may have to switch her to the highback sooner rather than later to see if that helps with the unbuckling.

I need to check Evie's 5pt carseat, I think she's actually over the weight limit on it and I need to move her to highback booster. Our school has the K and 1st graders in one parking lot, 2-5 in another lot, so they at least separate them smartly. The school Smilz L goes to has similar parking to your school it sounds like. She has sent me pictures from the pick up line where cars are stopped in the main street of our town, waiting to just get into the school parking lot. It's insane!

klong11 I think the first week I'm going to walk M in. It's probably just as far as a walk from my house as it is if I were to park by the school. If you walk them in, you can't arrive until 7:15. If you use the car line, you can start drop off at 7. At the PTO event I went to over the weekend, they were encouraging the drop off line because it's less crazy from 7-7:15 than it is from 7:15-7:30. Our elementary school is also a bus pick up/drop off location for kids that attend other magnet schools. So those parents are trying to drop their kids off, too. It gets really insane.

I honestly dont think that there are any 'good' times for these meetings, events, etc. I was annoyed when the Mothers Day tea was 10.15-11.30am because I had to take the whole day off, I was annoyed when I had to book the student led conferences, 4.30pm is when I get of the bus from my commute, 5.30pm is when we are eating, 6.30pm is when we are starting to wind down for the night, anything mid afternoon annoyed me cause I had to take the whole afternoon off. Not to mention any extra curricular sports etc that were scheduled for the weekdays.
Anything extra felt like it just made the week even busier than it was, but it is what it is because I really dont see when there is the 'perfect' time that things could be scheduled to fit everyone's schedule.

Drop off line is fresh hell, it creates chaos for the school, teachers, helpers, kids, neighbourhood etc. It's encouraged for people to send their kids on the bus, or park and walk them in and after a couple times seeing it for myself I completely understand why.
