huh. is it just a regular cup with a removable lid? I don't remember these being around when DD was transitioning to sippy cups. The second pic of those kids playfully having a picnic of berries on a white shag rug is giving me heart palpitations. It would take my kid .3 seconds to get berry juice everywhere. I'm laughing this because really, what small kids are just casually sharing a drink and no spills under the white shag rug??!! 🤣 Definitely not mine. I refused to get new carpets upstairs in the bedrooms when we bought our house because I have cats and had a baby at the time. I'm not stupid. They'd be destroyed in months. Same thing with me an a new couch. We'll get a new couch when my kids have moved out.

Mostly things with sharp corners or non-detachable cushions, but at this rate it'll be 2030 before we can haul them out again. Hopefully just in time for the 20-year trend cycle to come around so everything is still hip

Between a baby and our gaggle of dogs, they made quick work of destroying it.

anarossi, I am bilingual and Korean is my native language but it is no longer my dominant language. My plan initially was to speak to him mostly in Korean but that has been much harder than I had thought because I felt the need to connect with him in the language I felt most comfortable in, and becoming harder still as he is learning to communicate pretty well with us in English now. We are not super close to my family, physically or otherwise, and there is not a Korean community in our area to speak of, so I feel a lot of pressure being the only person that could provide him any exposure. I speak to him and say Korean words to him occasionally and am trying to make more of an effort and we have some books I read to him. He knows a few words and will repeat some new words back to me but I don't think he understands much of what I say. I have been looking up kid's shows that might be helpful for him to watch. We don't do a lot of screen time but my plan is to basically limit all screen time to Korean shows. We plan to visit in the next year or so and maybe that will be helpful to him or maybe not all that much at only 3ish. I can see him maybe spending a more extended period of time there on his own when he is older but I know that it will be harder the longer we wait. It is really hard...

So it's got the little opening to get him used to tipping up the cup, then a smooth rim when he's ready to take the lid off. They're cheap, so I figured we might as well try it. Turns out he does pretty well with it. Also, no way in hell to giving him juice in anything anywhere except over the kitchen tile.

I can see him maybe spending a more extended period of time there on his own when he is older but I know that it will be harder the longer we wait. It is really hard... We've found a few cartoons that have been dubbed into a bazillion languages, so we do this too - almost no TV/screen time but when we do allow it, it's all Portuguese. Your situation sounds so similar to ours. English has been MH's dominant language for 20 years, if not longer. Other than his own parents, to whom he really only speaks occasionally, he wasn't using Portuguese at all, for anything, so there was a "relearning curve" just for him to feel fluent again. There's also no Portuguese community here. A lot of Brazilians but Brazilian Portuguese is sufficiently different (think American English vs. British English) so not very helpful. Books have been a great addition, but I can't imagine juggling a new writing system as well - that adds a layer of complexity to your task, I'm sure. Kids learn most from hearing the language, even if they're not speaking themselves. I think you're headed in the right direction with books and kids' shows. Does he have a favorite topic? Teach him those concepts/words first - he's more likely to retain the info because they represent topics of interest to him. For us, that was outer space. I'm not making this up: DS's first word (in ANY language) was "lua", which is Portuguese for "moon". Finally one more suggestion: give him a Korean nickname that you will use ONLY when speaking Korean with him. When he hears it, he will know that he's expected to participate in Korean instead of English. It takes awhile before this idea manifests but it really works. I call DS I.van and DH calls him by his middle name, Vasc.o. GL! ETA: are you near any universities? You don't have to give details but I'll say that so many universities have international student populations and I'm sure there are students who would LOVE to spend time chatting with a toddler. Maybe try to find an ESL or TESOL program and inquire?

anarossi, I really commend your H for being dedicated and diligent about it and I really wish I had done better from the beginning. He does have a Korean middle name that I think just recently he is starting to pick up on and I need to order more books - he loves trains/trucks/etc. so I do try to find books that I think will interest him. At this point, I would be happy if he is able to have decent receptive language, as I know a lot of people who were able to improve their speaking dramatically by spending one summer in Korea. The Korean alphabet is relatively easy to learn - I was able to teach my husband pretty easily. There is a university in the area and I know there is a small international student population - there used to be a restaurant here that has since closed and I would often see groups of students there. It would be amazing if I could find a college student to spend time with my kid. I'll have to dig around and see what I can find and who I can contact - thanks for the idea!

Whoops! Sorry for taking over the thread! This is a topic I could talk alllllll day about. No, please, go on. We are attempting to raise DD English-Spanish bilingual. H does a pretty good job speaking only Spanish to her, and they speak English and Spanish at daycare, which helps. I do find myself saying some of the few things that I know in Spanish, just from hearing it so much more.

I just ordered these Tegu travel set today - it seems to be a good price and I'm hoping it'll be a good for taking to restaurants and such. We have a ton a tegu blocks. The travel sets are great for restaurants- just keep an eye out on them because they can get scattered on the floor quick

I play mostly with N16 but I also have a July 2015 kiddo. I SAH and have my hands full with two boys and am currently trying to think of how to entertain them all summer without losing my sanity.

I was originally the mod of the toddler board but that dropped off into almost nothing. Then they suggested combining the infant, toddler, and preschool boards and our group may be little but we're still going strong. I'm so glad so many people have come to check us out and stay and post. 😊

Are the magnets of the tegu blocks exposed? We got some knock off magnatiles last prime day and ended up sending them back because the magnets could come out easily.
Omg, that reminds me prime day is coming up. I need to just go off the grid that weekend. It would be better for my wallet. I buy so much shit for DD then it's crazy. A lot goes to Christmas but she doesn't need more toys.

My only complaint about Tegu is I wish there were more magnets in some of the larger blocks. Sometimes it really stifles my creativity.

We have a Melissa and Doug block set that is really great but some days I want to write them and be like you need to include 2 more large rectangular blocks so I can build my dream castle.

I have an unexpected kid-free morning. My in-laws were going to take us to a garden where they have a membership but it’s suppose to rain all day. So now they’re taking the kids to the children’s museum and I’m going to stay home and knock out my cleaning to-do list. It’s mostly upstairs stuff that I can’t get to because someone is always sleeping. I am insanely excited to spend a rainy day home alone.
