thinkchocolate05, I’m another in the hypothyroid club. I’m sorry you’ve had a scare about it—and really sympathize because I was worried a few weeks ago when my blood levels came back high and my doc didn’t get back to me about it for weeks. My OBGYN also tests (but not until 12 weeks) and I agree (as a non-professional) that it would be better to have more proactive testing for it. However, there is not complete agreement among endocrinologists over whether all subclinical people should be treated (including pregnant women). The reason for testing T4 specifically is that depending on your levels, it may cancel out / balance a high TSH. My GP caught mine for other reasons not related to pregnancy, but was especially keen to test when she knew I was family planning. I’m sticking with her to oversee my levels because she is more conservative about testing and making adjustments whereas my OB would have only had me tested once a trimester. ☹️ So, if you have an option for who manages it, it might be worth asking about.

I also cry at stories about babies and expecting and meeting the kid and everything. I know I cried over my kid as a baby because of how perfect he was snuggled on my chest.
But right after birth when they brought him to the NICU and I had to finish checking in to the hospital, I think I was just like, “Well, that was crazy.” No tears.

cmb, I can’t imagine how scary your DS’s diagnosis was when you first heard. I’m glad it was addressed so quickly. Also, thank you for saying that about possible inaccuracies in the NIPT results for sex. We’ve been team Green because I’d rather be overprepared for either rather than surprised by having the wrong info from an u/s. But recently I was considering checking NIPT results because I assumed it was infallible. Now that I know it miiiiight be wrong, I’m not gonna. Thanks, it was! It was such a random catch, too! Luckily, his TSH was around an 8, so it wasn’t as bad as it could be. DH had gotten diagnosed shortly before DS1 was born when his TSH was >200 (lab cut off), so I freaked for a while that it was missed at birth. When we showed up at his 1 year app, the pediatrician asked about teeth. When I said he had none, but DH and I were both that way, the pedi said that at 13m, if he had no teeth, we were to run a thyroid panel as that could be the culprit (it can also be genetic). Sure enough, he got his first tooth 5 days after the cut off to test his thyroid. The test was done in February, and I think he started meds in May that year (pedi endo did two confirmatory draws). We go back in June to try a second trial for remission. He failed the first one at the 3 year mark, but she wants to try one last time.

cmb, wait so it wasn’t caught at birth? How did it come to light? Edit: wait, you mean it wasn’t caught until his annual because of the teeth? Oh, wow! I’m glad your pedi knew to check. That’s a lot to deal with finding out about YH and then worrying about your LO postpartum. 💜 It sounds like it’s been a significant part of his health and development. You’ve been through a lot and you’ve been awesome at managing it and advocating for him.

thinkchocolate05, I’ve lost track of some of the articles that gave really good info, but here’s the details of one you should be able to easily find online with the current policies. Some stuff you can find online has outdated info that is further anxiety-inducing. THYROID Volume 27, Number 3, 2017 a American Thyroid Association a Mary Ann Liebert, Inc. I think we are officially weaning so I am having all the feels. She’s almost 2 so I am thrilled that I was able to do this for so long. I’m trying to enjoy each session these days, but man those aversions are intense. She’s nursing 1-2x a day and my H is doing her night time now.

PSA- measle titers may not have been part of your OB panel, so if you’re near an outbreak area, you may want to consider asking.
I learned this today when I called to check on mine. Sure enough, three pregnancies and two providers, I’ve never had them checked. 🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️

I was just thinking about this the other day bc I think I'm old enough to possibly have just gotten the one shot versus the two that became usual. I'll ask at my next appointment.

I'm pretty positive I got it during my last pregnancy, 4 years ago.

I lmgtfy'd myself and it says 2 rounds of mmr are good for 20 years (I assume I read that correctly, anyway). That rocks.

I'm pretty positive I got it during my last pregnancy, 4 years ago. It’s one of those you shouldn’t get while pregnant, actually- rubella can cross the placenta In the 90s, they moved over to a two vaccine schedule. The first time, 90ish% (94% sticks out in my head) of people develop immunity. The second round is to catch those who didn’t. However, it still leaves 3-4% unimmunized, and normally, those would be protected by herd immunity. With the rise of the anti vax and delayed/split MMR (so they’re now behind on getting it), that herd immunity (which requires about 95% immunity in the population) isn’t as great as it was. Edit- MMR is also a live vaccine, which makes it a no no for pregnancy. Same as the chicken pox one

Sorry, I'm dense; can you explain for dummies? Are you saying we need a titer/booster/thingy for MM (-R)? Not everyone who got MMR as a child is immune? Wouldn't the pedi tell you if you didn't develop an immunity or wouldn't you get sick? Is whatever immunity issue with MMR also true for all vaccines?

cmb huh, I could swear I got it during pregnancy because I was no longer immune to rubella. I was assured it was safe at the time but I guess it could have been after. However, I don't remember having to bring my daughters with me to any pp appointments and I remember them watching me get the shot. Well, I guess either way, I'm good lol.

Titers aren’t usually tested after the fact, so the assumption is you’re immune with the vaccine. By running titers, the doctors are confirming that immunity still exists. ETA- measles was one of those that was pretty much gone until it’s resurgence in recent years, so there never really was much reason to test titers. At least, I assume that’s why

I had them check my measles titers because there's an outbreak in my area. I think rubella is routine and they checked that so I asked if that meant I'm protected from the outbreak. She said no and submitted the measles lab request for me. You can't get the shot while pregnant (as mentioned) but I wanted to know for peace of mind. I hate the anti-vax movement so much.

babystandish How is it the end of April?! It's hitting me hard that we have two months until we move out of our place here in San Fran. Take a three-week trip to Australia with our will-be 2yo. Then move into a new place in Baltimore. It's going to be awesome but also just a ton of big stuff this summer. I still need to find a midwife in Baltimore (been putting off calling around). And an apartment (we have a realtor who's supposed to be helping but crickets from her and rentals will open up in the next few weeks). Eek.

It snowed today 😭
We had a crazy busy day with DD’s ballet, dentist appointments, and we still have swimming lessons tonight! DH isn’t sure he can make it to swimming on time so I might be solo with both kids which is fine until I’m attempting to shower everyone without DS slipping and falling

Ugh, I just had the weirdest experience trying to get my blood drawn for my 2nd tri screening.
My dr told me last week when I saw her to go get my blood drawn this week, and she gave me a paper with the orders. I asked her where to go and she told me the location where my PCP is. I confimed 2x more before I left. Well, I just went over there and...that was not the right place. They all acted like I walked in with orders that were in a different language. There were 4 people there all freaking out. What do we do with this? Who is your dr? Where is she located? Your dr was supposed to do blah. We're not part of ___ office. (Meanwhile the guy's nametage said ___ in 2 places, it says ___ on the wall, etc.) I keep telling them I will just leave and call my dr and he won't give me my order back because he keeps trying to explain it to me, and everyone else is still running around everywhere. I finally get out of there, but I am so flustered now! I have anxiety, so now my anxiety is through the roof and I still don't entirely understand what happened. They made me feel so weird.
Anyway, I guess I'll call my dr and try to figure out where I'm supposed to go. This is a different dr than I had with my son because our insurance changed, and while I like her a lot, any time she has tried to send me to another office to get something done it has been a nightmare of confusion for me. (like taking almost a month just to get my NIPT scheduled because I couldn't get a hold of anyone.) I had some other errands I was going to run when I was done with the blood draw, but I was so flustured I just came home and now I'm sitting alone in the dark trying to get my anxiety down. Luckily MH brought some donuts from our favorite place home, so I think I'll start with one of those.

stayingblonde that sounds awful! I hate when people send you running around on a wild goose chase and it ends up being terribly awkward. I'm sorry you had to go through that and I hope that both parties get their crap together. I agree with peggyhill, I don't see why they freaked out. Way to be helpful and professional, people.
