Ok, here is our finding out the sex story...
It took me forever to schedule my NIPT, and I finally had my blood draw on Monday. The Dr said results would take about a week, and I was really hoping we would get them back by Friday because we were seeing both of our families in person this weekend. When Friday came around and we hadn't heard, we decided to schedule a last-minute elective 3D u/s so they could tell us and we could surprise our families.
Well, the tech didn't feel 100% positive about the sex. She was about 90% sure, but the baby had its feet crossed and also one particular angle was stumping her. So even after all that, we couldn't tell our families this weekend. 🤣
The u/s place has a guarantee, so we can go back next weekend and try again. But we'll have the NIPT results by then. (Hopefully tomorrow?)
So, now we can play a game. The u/s tech was pretty sure it was a girl, but not 100% sure. Let's see if she was right!

We've mentioned a baby coming and have a gift book and library books about becoming a big sister/sibling. But I don't expect J to get it until she's closer to 2yo (end of June) and there's a bump to see and touch.

We told our kiddos after the 9 week scan. My 4 year old gets it, but my almost 2 year old is pretty oblivious. I remember when I was pregnant with my 2nd, my oldest didn't really grasp it until the baby was actually here lol. He was 2 years and a few months when she was born.

I had to tell my 6yo because he was all "why won't you playyyy with meeeee" when I was feeling like literal poo a few weeks back. I started to feel guilty and "I just don't feel well" only plays so long. stayingblonde What a roller coaster! lol Hopefully you get your results ASAP.

Our 3.5 year old knows and she comments on it every day. She’s in a phase now where she refers to her younger sister as her puppy so she says “now I’m going to have TWO puppies!”

Happy to hear that even though I am "elderly" (it literally said that on the test order), there are no issues detected and everything looks good. Yay! AND they said chromosomes indicate it's a boy! I'm in shock because the u/s tech was so sure it was a girl. But she wasn't sure enough to call it, so here we are!

Anyone else have elevated TSH? Mine is 4.06 at 16 weeks with the cutoff being 4.5. They said they want it closer to 2. He drew blood again and said I needed to go to an endocrinologist if it's still borderline.
Of course I googled everything and now I'm really paranoid about it even though I'm not over the limit.

I’m going to be that person who says to go back and have her confirm via ultrasound. See spoiler for reasoning
There have been posters here who had bloodwork say male and the u/s show female (and it was female). There’s a slightly higher chance of inaccuracy with moms of boys due to the possibility of you having DS1’s fetal cells in your blood
We also had a woman on Jan’15 who was told girl at her A/S and went back for a growth scan 3 months later and discovered it was a boy... just saying, either or could be wrong

cmb Oh, interesting! Thank you for sharing! We have a follow up u/s scheduled on Sunday. We get to come back for free since she wasn't completely sure, so we'll what that one says! This is such a wild ride!

I dont want to alarm you, and all fingers crossed you are in the clear. I am basing this off what was explained to me by my reproductive endocrinologist: he explained that while the healthy cut off is 4.5, it should be less than 3 for women who are wanting to conceive. He said any number over 3, and you are 4 times more likely to miscarry. His office refuses to even do treatment until TSH is under 3 for this reason. He might have mentioned some other things about it but this was 1.5 years ago so memory is a bit fuzzy. If your number is high, you will probably only need to take synthroid, a minor annoyance. It is alarming. I was googling this yesterday to try to figure out WHEN it causes miscarriages. I would assume I would have miscarried early first trimester if I was going to because of that. I wonder if it can cause second trimester miscarriages? I think TSH level also rises in the 2nd trimester, so it was probably lower early on. I hope it hasn't already caused issues in brain development. I'm wondering if I should just wait for my new test results to come in or call them and try to get the synthetic? You'd think they would put the threshold lower if it could cause such issues at 4. I wonder why he didn't seem more concerned.

thinkchocolate05 I found out I was subclinical hypothyroid with a TSH in the high 3s when I first found out I was pregnant with my first and I was immediately put on synthroid bc they told me they wanted it under 2.5 in the first trimester and under 3 in the remaining trimesters. The threshold is different for pregnant folks than the normal population. I would ask your OB or PCP for synthroid—it’s really not a big deal to take and then you’ll be able to bring that TSH down. They will likely test it every 4 weeks and adjust your dosage as needed.

Did they also run your T3/T4 levels? Unless your TSH is really abnormal, I’ve seen the standard to be to do a second draw shortly after the first before jumping to meds because the first can be a fluke. As for brain development in babies, TSH levels in regards to this become more of an issue when the baby is born with his/her own abnormal levels or has juvenile hypothyroidism. They automatically test T3/T4 levels at birth, and then usually TSH only when that’s abnormal... I asked a lot of questions of our pedi endo when DS1 got diagnosed with hypothyroidism about this stuff.

Thanks cmb. That makes me feel better. I think that is exactly what they are doing. He said they did the blood draw yesterday to see if the tsh was still elevated because he said the numbers can be off sometimes. He indicated they would medicate if the number wasn't significantly down in this next drawing. I'll call them tomorrow or Friday to check.

I see there were a bunch of responses. Thank you!. I will come back later, as I am pretty jet-lagged right now, but I just have to get this off my chest because I am exhausted but also so embarrassed I can’t sleep.
TMI warning: I just took two long flights and the first pilot did some of the craziest banking ever as he descended to land. I vomited so hard that I wet myself—multiple times in a row. I don’t generally have problems with my pelvic floor. OMG, it was so awful and then I had to find a bathroom before switching terminals in an airport I’d never been to before. Fortunately there was a bag, I was in a single row and brought clothes in my carry-on but oh the humiliation of being trapped in a tiny tin can plane with everyone right on top of you while you are freaking disgusting and that horrible run of shame while scanning frantically for the nearest restroom. I was the last out, but the stewardess shooed me off the plane and everyone who had to check their carry-ons were waiting on the tarmac for their bags and they literally all stared in silence at me as I came down a long ramp.
🤢😱😵🙈 (I wish there was a sinking into the floor emoji or something that aptly portays the horror)

My PCP has no problem handling my script now. I think it ia ridiculous that TSH is not part of a standard work up for wanting to get pregnant H’s PCP handles his. He’s never seen a specialist. DS1, however, sees a dedicated pedi endo. Testing thyroid levels is provider specific. I’ve never had mine check, and I’ve done the OB and MW route. It wasn’t tested during my RPL bloodwork either. It’s a similar set up to whether people have to give urine samples at each visit. ETA- I was thinking about this in the car. I wonder if testing TSH is age related. Like, if there’s an age cut off for it to be standard 🤷🏼♀️

It’s interesting that those two things often end up being the culprit in so many miscarriages but aren’t tested upfront routinely.

When I was pregnant with my first, I would watch A Baby Story and be in tears the whole time. I give birth to my own babies and not a single tear. What gives, man?

roseinbloom that sounds like what is termed SPD (symphysis pelvis disfunction) here. I hope you find something that can give relief! And yes, both my boys personalities were apparent in utero. As for the hiccups, they both got them daily 🤷🏼♀️ Yes, thank you!!! That lead me to it—“pelvic girdle pain” and sacroiliac pain. I kind of love the hiccups, I hope they come back and I don’t regret saying that. It’s so sweet that you could see different personalities for your boys. Aww. 💕

aeroplaneoverthesea, when H’s cousin was preg, her DS asked for a boy and her DD asked for a girl. H joked with her she should tell them whoever was the better behaved until the kid was born would get what they wanted, lol.

Aww, so many of these telling-the-kid(s) stories were so cute, I giggled at a few of them.
As for the airplane, I think I’ll wear heavy makeup to disguise myself, a thick pad JIC, and beg the universe that it’s not the same team on the way back. And may no one else ever experience my tragedy.

cmb, I can’t imagine how scary your DS’s diagnosis was when you first heard. I’m glad it was addressed so quickly. Also, thank you for saying that about possible inaccuracies in the NIPT results for sex. We’ve been team Green because I’d rather be overprepared for either rather than surprised by having the wrong info from an u/s. But recently I was considering checking NIPT results because I assumed it was infallible. Now that I know it miiiiight be wrong, I’m not gonna.
