So cute!! We went to the tulip festival a few years ago. And now I want some Dutch letters.......🤤 H's aunt sends us a huge box of baked goods from Jarsma every Christmas. Dutch letters are the best! Yumm! Before kids, DH’s aunt would send us Dutch letters and cheese as a sweet care package for a taste of Home. Now they just spend the money on the kids. I could go for that Dutch letter! 🤣

Hi! I’m hungover! 🤣 Dh and I went out to a wine bar last night. Then we walked the pier with crazy winds to make sure we didn’t get home before bedtime! Ha. Then we stayed up playing a game with ILs and drinking more champagne when my friend came home with a case from wine tasting. Sunday funday....oooof. 5:45 came quickly. DS went from finally walking without holding a hand Thursday, to playing soccer yesterday! He’s crazy! Also he has been signing new signs every day! What a leap!! We went to Seaworld this weekend and the kids loved it. Our friend got us passes, so it was nice not to have to force seeing everything in one day. What signs are you working on? H needs a few more since he doesn't have too many words. I really want him to sign more WRT food. He isn’t really signing eat, drink, water, or any foods in particular. He is signing milk, more and please now a lot. But I want him to be able to sign that he’s hungry (eat). So I’m working on the signs above, but also banana, cracker, cereal, apple. Also potty was great when dd would sign it to me when she pooped. Also a Dutch letter is this delicious flakey pastry that is filled with almond paste, shaped like a S. www.jaarsmabakery.com/aspx/general/AboutUs.aspx

thatgolfb that really sucks- there was no option to leave them behind? I would have been frustrated too. I wanted to, but their car got stuck in the snow so they wouldn’t have otherwise been able to get to the ski lesson for their son. So after trying to get their car out, we just took them in our car. And today, we could have just left, because really there wasn’t much we could do but help with the chains, but I would have felt bad if they and their kids got stranded and we just left them. IDK. We will be home at 8:15. We stopped and had dinner and I’m hoping Dd2 falls asleep on the way. We are an hour from home. [ Makes sense! I would have felt the same way.

Whomp whomp.
So spoke with my manager. My options are a) come up with a learning plan and more orientation or b) resign my position and try to find another job within the hospital. There's no spot for a pure permanent postpartum at the moment (there's a temp position but I'd be giving up all my seniority). Faaaaaaaaack.

Ummm...excuse me? You're flying to IOWA?? Why do I not know this? Tulip festival. MIL is from Pella. I live ~45 minutes from there. Perhaps we should come to Tulip time. Hmmmmm. Are you here a few days?

Feel free to ignore or not answer but this is what I would do/think about: How often would you have to rotate into L&D? If it wasn't too often I would absolutely pursue extended orientation. Ask your preceptors for their feedback- sometimes I would feel like I wasn't doing great but I was actually where I needed to be in learning a new skill- you aren't going to be an expert right away. I know your self assessment was that you weren't at a place that you could practice safely independently, but find out if that's really what the preceptors think too. Give yourself some grace with learning the new skills. Orientation plan: identify the skills/situations that you feel the most uncomfortable with and seek those out specifically. Maybe change preceptors if you aren't feeling like you are getting taught in a way that is helpful to you. Instead of "buddy shifts" ask that you be treated like a brand new l&d nurse in terms of learning plan and style. As far as not fitting in, that's a much harder thing to change, and I would again go back to how often you'd really have to do L&D vs postpartum.

Meaning I’m only scheduled shifts there. Then once that’s done the idea is I can be scheduled on either unit but pulled to L&D as a resource if I’m on PP. Everyone is pretty much in agreement that I’m struggling. I basically can only really triage and recover post delivery (vag or c/s) independently. And this is how they orient every brand new L&D nurse. Two days of theory and then 16 buddy shifts and boom on your own.

I would actually love to take the boys to the Tulip Festival so maybe we can let the kids play for a bit while we enjoy an adult beverage We can tell your MIL that it is a coincidence!

Is this a new position since returning from maternity leave? Seems like you’re in a tough situation. I have. I advice. Just hugs.

No it's technically the other half of my position, which is I'm contractually obligated to work both L&D and PP. But there wasn't enough time to begin orientation before I left for mat leave.

Personally if it were me I would stay on orientation for the time being to see if it gets better while also looking for other positions.

I sort of skimmed- do you not feel you are properly trained in the L&D portion so you don't feel completely comfortable? Is more training something you think would help, or do you just really not want to do L&D anymore? Both options don't seem great for what you want.

N is teething and in the stormy phase of this leap so he's been super clingy and whiny the past few days. Slept like shit Sunday into Monday, and then was up for over 2 hours last night (H finally lent a hand and took over around 3am). Between that and H barely helping me with our clingy whiny mess of a toddler yesterday, I am super tired and cranky RN. We're supposed to have major snow tomorrow, but it won't hit until mid-morning/lunch. I'm supposed to start offsite training for work tomorrow as well, and the training place said they will be open regardless, so we need to make every effort to attend unless they change their minds in the AM. Personally I think if everyone around you is closing, maybe you should too because it's not worth it to risk injury or property damage to come in, but this seems to be a UO (especially with H's work). So we'll see what happens. (To be fair no major closings have been announced yet, but if the afternoon forecasts stay the same, you can tell they're coming.) Hugs, snuff9861 .

I’m sorry snuff9861 that’s too bad that you can’t just stay on the postpartum unit if that’s what you love and are comfortable with.

Helllooo everyone. I had some awful nausea and abdominal pain yesterday. I left work early and went straight to bed- first convinced myself that I was knocked up, then appendicitis. But I’m feeling better today so it was probably just a bug. C did have a one-off diarrhea blowout yesterday too so he probably got it as well.

I’m sorry snuff9861. Hopefully the extra training will help you become more comfortable with the position. I know how tough it is though to be in a job, feel over your head, and know that others feel the same way too. E has another ear infection. So add us to this winter is never ending with illness club. We actually brought him in for an issue with his baby toe nail (basically it’s going to fall off. Nothing serious) but we had the doctor check him out because he has another cold. Low and behold, an ear infection. He has been sleeping badly but since he sleeps badly pretty much every night anyway, it’s hard to tell when he’s in pain.
