FX everything goes smoothly today, chrisy01. How’s it looking so far? They are functional but it’s not at 100%. Apparently that was the game plan? He had an extra 3 months and couldn’t resolve it? That guy is really out of his depth.

I feel bad because he was thrown into this world of project management without any training or guidance. But he won’t take my help so I only feel bad a little now

slenle VA is too cold for my taste, I do not know how you do it!! I saw Chicago is colder than Antarctica today, I imagine your area is the same. 🥶🥶 Yep. We are getting wind-chill from -20 to as low as -55 tonight. All the things are getting cancelled and we are preparing to hibernate.

So basically, we have always talked about owning a beach house but it never seemed realistic, the day we closed on this house, we were left with $36 combined. Since DH has changed careers somewhat, we are in a much better place and we are living a lot below our means. DH has been taking about a new house but we aren’t unhappy where we are so yesterday I threw it out there that we should consider keeping our house and looking into a beach house. In my head, we were getting a tiny old cottage where the kids would be packed into bunk beds that would basically fill there entire room. I sent him some links to what I had in mind. We come to find those houses are on leased land so you own the house but not the land. He started looking at some other options and found I few that I love that would be so much better so a lot of reasons. We have reached out to a realtor and to our mortgage guy so we will see. Not sure if anything will come of it but just in case, I’m eating bland grilled chicken on organic spring mix so I can look good on the beach by summer.

Hey. It just as cold here as it is at slenle’s house. H had school this morning but it sounds like everything is closing starting this afternoon. Tomorrow is supposed to be the coldest. I don’t like it. S and I met a friend and her kids at an inflatable place this morning. That was fun. Now it’s nap time and S is too busy talking to go to sleep. Dang kids.

That's exciting kim22 ! Funny, we were just watching "Beachfront Bargain Hunt" this weekend and they were up in NJ, I believe, and the 'leased land' thing came up; they said it added $10K annually to the (tiny) properties they were looking at. So IMO I'd buy something where you'd own the property it's on and at least get the equity someday for the extra money you're spending on the mortgage each month.

Hi!
M2 is doing a bit better today. He’s at daycare. I felt guilty leaving him because he spit up a lot when I suctioned him before leaving and he was crying and I had a feeling maybe he doesn’t feel as good as he looks. I had a pit in my stomach for the next hour until I called DC to see how he was and they said he perked right up and was playing. Sigh of relief.
There was talk about possibly getting a bit of snow here, but it just rained this morning. The sun is now out, but it is cold! We’re supposed to be in the 20s tonight. Negative temps are a hell no for me. Nope nope nope. I do not want to know what that life be like.

I thought about you last night kim22. Not sure if I missed it, but how was your girl’s day and broadway show? Also a beach house sounds fun! Why not? Do you all have a lot of summer commitments with the kids? If not, go for it!

kim22 a holiday home sounds amazing. The only downside for me could be feeling obliged to go to the same place every time, I like exploring new things. Then again, if I could buy a house at the place we go to for all our mini vacation, I’d happily go there every weekend/holiday etc.

Do you all have a lot of summer commitments with the kids? If not, go for it! Thanks! I had a great day at the play. The friend I took is the one whose parents own a house in the area we are looking and it was through them that DH and I met. DH is from that area so we have a lot of friends and family there. DD has gymnastics all summer except the first week of July and the last week of August. Ironically, one of her teammate’s families bought the house 3 down from one we are looking at. We both have 4 kids of similar ages and it’s only a bit over an hour to home so we could probably work something out going back and forth. DH would also be able to take the train from his office to the beach pretty easily if I stayed down with the kids. DS only has various hockey camps we sign him up for so I could even do ones local to that area.

kim22, I think it all depends how you vacation. A vacation home is not for me for the following reasons 1) don't want to be obligated to go the same place so often, 2) don't want to deal with renters, 3) because of renters wouldn't be able to leave some of our personal affects there that would make a rental home easier for travel. But I do like the idea of being able to take the dog and not having to find pet-friendly places. Having a place to escape to. I wouldn't want the lease the land option. That seems like there's too many variables where things could go wrong. I'd definitely want to own the land too.

The dog thing is big, my dog is still so afraid of other people and pets so I feel bad leaving her. The house we used to rent and bring her isn’t available this year and every pet friendly one I found is about $15,000 for a week so not worth it. My hope would be that we wouldn’t rent it out but that all depends on what we end up spending. I also say we are going to take all these vacations but we always end up at Disney or the beach anyway. DH and I grew up going to very different areas of the Jersey shore and I have been holding out to buy where I used to go but that is never going to happen, it’s a lot more money and nearly 2 hours more travel time.

kim22 we go to the lake a lot and it is a 2 hour drive. We always rent a cabin and talk about one day buying a lake house. Ultimately MH wants to buy a resort to run on the lake one day. But if we had a house down there we would totally spend more time there. So I say go for it! Especially since it's only about an hour drive! Heck, I am currently commuting 1 hour for work, and we do the same quite regularly for appointments, to go to the *good* grocery store, and do any decent shopping.

RE: vacation homes, With my parents' lake house, we did travel elsewhere other times of year but summer was all about Maine. In recent years they have started doing trips in the summer but for the first 15 or so that they owned it, summers were sacred. It's a short season and you're spending a ton of money so there is definitely an obligation to use it. Like inthekitty said, it's nice not having to worry about renters so that you can leave personal effects. I also think many vacation home renters are a lot...pickier now that we have the internet where we can air every grievance. We rented it for multiple weeks every summer before we bought it; it was very dated and shabby in some ways, but we loved it. Nowadays that type of house would get poor reviews and probably wouldn't make it as a rental. On the positive side, b/c we grew up going away in the summer, we really didn't know anything different. Maine was just what we did; friends of my parents' who bought their homes later (when kids were high school or older) often lamented to my parents that their kids really fought them on going. But we had friends up there, summer jobs, etc. And now we are taking our own children back to the house and building those same memories and expectations with them. The plan right now is for my parents to pass it to us someday, and hopefully we can continue building that tradition. So kim22 I think from a timing perspective that would work in your favor

flamingo I do think ahead and hope that if we do this, it would be something to last for generations. The house we are hoping to go see has 4 bedrooms but the 4th bedroom is an upstairs addition they call a “studio apartment” with access only from stairs on the outside. It has a full bath but no kitchen. It doesn’t really work for us now except maybe to have friends stay in but I think I’m the future of our kids were to come with their families, DH and I could have our little escape from everyone else. I’m not sure if we could rent just that little room out sometimes but they might be an option.

I just walked out to get the garbage cans and bring them back onto the garage and I slipped, fell backwards and hit my head. I took while to get up without anyone/thing to grab on to. Came back in, and tried to tell M that was scared me most of what would happen if the kids were inside alone and I couldn’t get up. His response after making sure I was okay to tell me not to worry about that bc it’s not what happened. Yes, it’s not. But it could have. I am annoyed with him now.

I am a huge klutz...and this goes through my mind a lot! I trip or slip on the stairs at least every couple of weeks. And every single time, I play the scenario out, of S inside by herself, and me hurt too badly to get up (hit my head or something), and my phone is inside because I was just doing something trivial like taking out the garbage. And MH is out of town. And I think, how long would it be till someone misses me, how long would it be till someone comes to check on us. Morbid i know, but I totally get what you are saying!
