Apparently USPS has decided not to run today--anywhere--because GHWB's funeral. Is this a thing that typically happens? What happened to rain, sleet, snow, shine? That just seems like a bad idea

It’s been declared a federal holiday. They’re federal workers. They don’t work on other federal holidays either. It’s bit sudden and the timing is awkward since it is the holiday season, but if other feds get the day off then they should as well.

Nixon and Reagan, I believe. Also the markets will be closed. It's ok with me. Not a USPS decision in a vacuum - in conjunction with the national day of mourning (and pretty much expected, IMO).
BTW, I think Slate, and Ruth Graham, was callous and just plain stupid in going after President Bush's service dog. Stunts like that will just confirm a lot of negative attitudes that the 'left leaning media'. I honestly am disgusted Slate let that run.

I don't like this new suggestion that treating Muslims with humanity is synonymous with Antisemitism . All humans are humans. My god. The crisis in Gaza is so complicated and I'm not taking sides here but good lord, CNN, this is insane.

France suspended the proposed gas tax France suspends fuel tax after weeks of unrest wapo.st/2FXcnelI think Macron has been very wrong footed in the implementation of these taxes and its effect on the population as a whole - at least as seen from my couch. And this suspension seems like smoke and mirrors to me, not actually solving anything. But, we'll see.

Wait, what? CNN fired someone for saying Palestinians should have human rights? It is more complicated than his speech simply being pro-Palestinian. CNN interpreted his statements to be calling for the end of Israel. In his speech, he called for “a free Palestine from the river to the sea,” which has been used in the past as an anti-Semitic dog whistle supporting the destruction of Israel. He claims he wasn’t using the phrase in that context. I’m still trying to decide if I’m willing to believe him, but regardless, I’m not impressed by his word choice in front of a global audience.

I do see why CNN (and Temple, perhaps) felt they needed to do something. May have just complicated things even more, though.

Wait, what? CNN fired someone for saying Palestinians should have human rights? I have feelings about the fact that, 1) there is any sort of issue with Palestinians, who were and continue to be forcibly removed from their homes, and have been subject to an illegal and amoral occupation for years, are somehow less deserving of human rights than Israelis because...????, 2) they fired a black commentator over this, portraying his comments as far more radical than they were, because OF COURSE, and 3) white supremacists go on TV and even have whole TV shows and it's fine. This is where I am. And I know unrelated but it happened like a couple of days after they had Rick Santorum on a panel to talk about climate change. So I’m just kind of bye, Felicia to CNN with a nod to Don Lemon on the way out.

I do see why CNN (and Temple, perhaps) felt they needed to do something. May have just complicated things even more, though. Yes, I don’t know that CNN had great options in the current climate of rampant anti-semitism in the US coupled with a lot of terrible behavior by the current Israeli government. It was a phrase used by the PLO to describe their mission, so quite problematic historically. The Israeli consulate spoke out about it, along with high profile Israeli individuals. But now it’s being picked up and spun as something different that I don’t think it was by both the far right and left. In his speech, Hill was endorsing the full rights of Palestinians and other minorities in Israel as a binational state (so not the actual destruction of Israel, but a dismantling of the current Israeli government). I do think he knew this speech would cause controversy, regardless of whether he knew the loaded history of the phrase he used or meant it as a dog whistle. He has apologized and has a history of speaking against anti-semitism. Ugh. The generations of pain and millennia of deep history in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict make my heart hurt. It is a hard topic to navigate and so very emotional.

Sebastian Gorka is an actual anti-Semite, pleased that a black, liberal foe was fired and little more. I know. I dont think my sarcasm was coming through clearly.
I am not in agreement with this firing btw.
