I almost got into an argument with a student today who said she never intends to vote because no one in her family has ever voted and she hates all politics and wants to throat punch all politicians.

I remember the Florida Calling Debacle of 2000. I don't count on anything early Also that's good because N goes to bed at 7 so hopefully I won't be too behind lol. It took them like a month to figure out who was president, right? Yep. I was sitting in one of the food places on campus with a bunch of people from my International Political Theory class. They called Florida for Gore pretty quickly after the polls closed. I distinctly remember my professor saying "They called Florida for Gore? This is over." and he left. It was not over.

Completely anecdotal but my mom this morning, "Is anyone even running against Chris Murphy? I have seen and heard nothing." So hopefully this is how everyone in CT feels about this. The limited polling I have seen (and it is very limited) has Murphy way ahead. I mean I love him. He is easily one of my top picks for future presidential candidates. If CT effs this up I may have to move. It's like this re: my congressman, too. His opponents have covered very little ground. haha Don Beyer's opponent was standing in medians holding a photo of himself this weekend. He even had a sign spinner like a seedy discount mattress store.

I've got a pit in my stomach today. I can't decide if I should keep up with the news as it comes in, or tune out until tonight/tomorrow morning. I don't know if I can take the roller coaster.

I remember just being like this isn't supposed to happen, how is this happening?

I almost got into an argument with a student today who said she never intends to vote because no one in her family has ever voted and she hates all politics and wants to throat punch all politicians. In college, when I was younger and dumber, I told my professor that i had to miss class because of a family vacation. She said, how will you vote (election day fell during vacation)? Do you have an absentee ballot? I didn't, so I thought on my feet and said snottily that I never vote because I hate politics and they're all the same, etc. My professor lectured me so hard that day. But she did it in a way that stuck with me. She asked me to think of one thing that is important to me and then look at the people running for office and see how they feel about it. Just one thing. She listed off examples, the environment, gay rights, women's rights. She challenged me to pick one thing and see if the candidates running were all the same. She also asked me to look up countries that have free elections and those that don't and see which one I wanted to live in. This was all very early internet so I didn't immediately take on this research project. But it stuck with me and over time I learned what she meant.

& I'm so glad I don't live anywhere near my parents in times like this. I made the mistake of looking at my mom's fb this morning (we're not friends.) Red wave this, red wave that. I want to barf. I'm going to take DS to see Goosebumps to a little later to waste some time today. Oy.

To add to my anxiety, I am fb fighting about the lack of security presence at my kids’ school (a polling place) this morning. Good times. I hate that they use the school, it’s so crazy that anyone can just walk in today. We shouldn’t have to worry about it, but we do.

On election day in 2016, my boss - who I sort of assumed was Republican, for several reasons, although obviously you can never be sure - wore a bright blue blazer to work. It was outdated and totally not her style. She'd never worn it before, and hasn't worn it since, and it felt significant (no one talks about politics at work, and our industry is typically very red). Today, she's in a bright red blazer that I've never seen her wear before. Either her views have changed, or her clothes have nothing to do with anything and I should stop obsessing about everything and trying to look for signs everywhere, lol. In any case I'm here in a bright blue shirt and painted my nails blue. So, there.

H dropped off our ballots at city hall yesterday and protected my I voted sticker from DS who tried to steal both of them. I’m working from home today (working time questionable), but will wear it with pride.

Politics lurker hanging out here today. I'm scared to get my hopes up today. I haven't decided if I want to watch the returns tonight or not.
My election day confession is I was a hanging chad in 2000. I voted absentee in Florida because I was in college. I accidentally punched out half of the hole for Bush, realized I had done it wrong, pushed it back in, and voted for Gore.

They were up to 71 when the head judge did the hourly count while we were voting. Junie had an excellent time at her first election.

I'm a poster on one of the 2019 BMB boards, but I'm here, too. North Carolina, 2nd Congressional. H and I both voted absentee since I was supposed to be traveling today. The Raleigh newspaper just put out an article 4 days ago explaining that this district was redrawn to give a strong edge to the GOP for this election, but "should" be changed for the next one. www.newsobserver.com/news/politics-government/article221021080.html?fbclid=IwAR3RP60p3QAHaksDgw_LJoxPFf37gn8tLPSVI26hH0ac7xw0s-eKpUIOLcU Regardless, H and I both voted straight ticket D and against all of the amendments. My town already leans red as it was a past farming community that is shell shocked and angry by growth and "others" moving in. I'm praying the "others" along with me are also voting blue.

My dad got a sticker for voting in his absentee ballot and I did not! Am offended Virginia. They offered "I voted early" stickers, which I should have kept to wear today!

When I dropped the baby off at daycare, H had written "go vote!" on one of the bottles! I didn't know it until I put it in the fridge. I LOLed and the teacher asked why. She also said that her dad had sent out a mass text to their family last night reminding everyone to vote and how important it was. The teacher next door had already gone before coming to work, and one more reminded me to go vote on my way out. Most of these ladies are African American, so I'm glad to see them voting (I hope that doesn't come off the wrong way) so that we can get a little more blue around here.
H did early voting, and I'm taking the 3 year old this afternoon.

I mean, using schools as polling places makes sense bc they're buildings the government already owns and they're central to communities. I like the way my county handles it. Monday and Tuesday are conferences/teacher work days. And my principal usually gave us the option to work from home so we had plenty of time to go vote.

Our churches and schools are used in my county. There is no increased security but they do keep the kids in the classroom for lunch since they set up the voting booths typically right outside the cafeteria/gym. You also have to walk right in front of the office and those school secretaries are NO joke.
