I have my eye on the Outer Banks - I go there every year and it feels like home. It looks like the storm is supposed to hit further south, but OBX will still be dealing with a lot of flooding. I have some friends down there who are riding it out. A few years ago Hurricane Irene washed out Highway 12 on Hatteras Island and they were cut off from the mainland for months. I hope everyone in the path of this storm stays safe, evacuate if you're told to. This storm is a monster. We opted not to go this year because of the baby and this is the week that we usually go. It's crazy to think about how flooded highway 12 can get. Yeah us too. I just didn't want to make the drive this pregnant, we usually go down around this week too. My mom is supposed to be staying on Hatteras Island next week. Thank goodness she got trip insurance.

I don't know how weather works, but the UK is supposed to be getting this too in some form? I doubt we'll get the brunt of it, I just hope everyone manages to stay safe. There are several storms in the Atlantic right now. Helene is headed for the UK but she’ll fizzle before then. Tropical Depression Ophelia did hit Ireland last year, though. Oh dear! I'll have to go back on our news weather reports and see which one they think is hitting us, Florence seemed to sound right, but maybe I'm wrong? Either way, I still hope everyone stays safe, on both sides of the pond.

Florence is definitely not going to the UK boycebear . I mean follow along. Damn. I mean, the pics of the track alone, in this thread, make that obvious. Lolz.

MIL is visiting GMIL in SC and we are trying to convince GMIL to evacuate here. It’s not mandatory right now but her area is projected to get major flooding, etc. Of course, she is refusing.

If Florence holds together over the US after landfall then wraps back around to hit the UK at hurricane levels, godspeed.

Okay guys lets get it together. Remnants of a storm being carried by the jet stream thousands of miles awy is not equivalent to what the hell we are talking aobut right now. Probably the rain will come chucking down and that’s about it.

I said I could be wrong? I haven't had chance to look properly yet, just following headlines before I get to the stories. Damn. okay but even the headlines are like... "North Carolina" over and over again. I'm teasing-ish but damn. Yeah, I just read the article joy posted. The last one we got from you was actually worse than expected, albeit, nothing like you experience, I get that. We can't get the brunt of a tropical storm because we are not a tropical country. I guessed you had a hint of teasing in your post, I did too, hence the mimic, you'll get used to me soon enough 😉

I have friends scattered all over NC, some have evacuated because they will likely lose their home to water/wind. We are 300 miles from the coast but are projected to get 10+ inches of rain. We’ve had over 52 inches this year so the ground is a bit saturated. The area that is supposed to get a direct hit is where we always vacation. I’m very worried for the people there who are choosing to stay.

I'm in the middle of NC and we have done some light preparations - bought water, filled up our cars with gas, etc. DH got the generator out yesterday and he has to fix something on it so fingers crossed we don't need to use it this weekend. A bunch of colleges and some school districts near me have closed friday so I'm waiting to see if my girls' daycare closes as well. There is still some uncertainty on what's going to happen inland so I want to be prepared but not stress myself out about it. This is us as well. Central NC. Trying not to stress out too much. We have gotten water, gas, some canned foods, but that is pretty much it. Our family from the coast came in yesterday. The track keeps changing, so I really don't know what to expect. Our area usually doesn't have a lot of flooding problems, but I am worried about trees falling from the ground being so saturated. We've had a lot of rain already, non-hurricane related.

My boss was here in Michigan until yesterday, they are back in Raleigh this morning trying to prep as much as possible. I am a ball of nerves for everyone on the coast.

Also in NC not too far from Raleigh. Since the track has changed, I feel better about how things will be in our area. We have a 3 year old and 8 week old, so we have planned to leave since Sunday. Fortunately H's parents live in SW VA, so we have some place safe to go. If they hadn't planned on us coming, I'd be okay with us staying if that makes any of you with family and friends in the RDU area feel better.
That's really generous and kind of those of you offering to help people evacuate. Definitely makes you realize how privileged you are when you can do it easily.

chickenonsunday where are you? I’m in Charlotte, and I think we’re mostly looking at awful rain and possibly flooding. I was thinking of you this morning. I have no experience with Carolina hurricanes. Are we panicking about flooding? I could drive 2 hours east to the in laws, but I’m not sure if the mountains are any better. This is my first hurricane with kids and I’m just not sure what to do. Growing up close to the gulf, you get the hell out, but that doesn’t seem to be the case here. We are supposed to get flooding, high winds and mudslides in the mountains. 🤷🏼♀️

I'm having a hard time figuring out where you are! Other than potential flooding, which will be much more problematic down east or if you live near a river, the big concern is downed trees because the ground will be so wet. That's what happened in Fran. I think if you're not in the eastern part of the state/in a flood prone area you'll be fine to ride it out. Power outages and no kids in school for up to a week-hopefully not!-some damage from trees are what I would expect.
