Speaking of naps. Can I have some advice please?
A is 11 months. Still naps 2-3 times a day. I *try* to get his nap schedule around 9 and then again at 2, but usually it’s off by an hour or two. My main issue is he will not sleep anywhere but on me (nursing) or he’ll fall asleep in the car. Most of what I’ve read is CIO isn’t the best for naps. Though it worked well for nighttime sleep.
How do I get him to sleep in his crib? He’ll just scream until I’m give up and nap him on me.

What we did was really establish a good routine and schedule for naps first. Our nap time routine is similar to bedtime - nurse, books, sing, sound machine on... then I would let him nap on me and we did this for a while until I felt like the schedule and routine were working reliably, as in he would fall asleep quickly and easily. And then we just went through the same routine and put him in the crib and let him CIO but he was plenty tired and figured it out pretty quickly. I hope you can get there soon with your guy. I know how stressful it can be and being trapped under a napping baby is very unproductive, albeit sometimes a good excuse to take a break.

That's his normal lately. How is that even possible? Like when is this happening? And what time does he go to bed and wake up? I can’t wrap my head around a 4 hour nap. Today it was between 10-2. Wake up is at 7am and bedtime is 7ish. I have no idea if he asleep the entire time.

It just throws off the schedule. Get him used to napping alone then worry about the schedule ETA- CIO at nap time often fails because parents give up and just assume the kid isn’t tired, when it’s often the opposite- they’re tired but don’t want to be left alone to go to sleep.

I think Precious Little Sleep says one hour and then you consider that nap to be over.

@easilyunamused that’s tough. Does he start crying as soon as you put him in the crib? I forgot to add earlier that I read him one last book in the crib and I think it helps to practice hanging out in the crib without freaking out. He’s not perfect but he does pretty well most days.

Should I put a lovely in there now? piratecat, do you nurse, lay him in the crib, and then read a book?

We used to do white noise but around a year found it was just keeping her up. Daycare does music so we tried that and it works. She's been listening to the Moana sound track every night, and for naps, for over a year. Sometomes I can get her to listen to the Pandora lullaby channel.

There is a band he’s super responsive too because I listened to them most of my pregnancy. I’ll try it!

DS2 never took to a particular type of music

I nurse (though he refuses it about half the time now), read a couple of books, then turn lights off, close curtains, sit him down in the crib and read one more book, then turn on the sound machine and leave. Sometimes if he seems particularly awake I’ll leave the book with him in the crib and he’ll look at it and play for a little while before falling asleep.

We have a lovey in the crib for DD, and I know she'll talk to her bear if she's awake in her crib. I have let her cry a bit before a nap, but haven't done CIO. She has an angry cry that's kind of intermittent, and then a sad/distressed cry that's constant. If she's angry crying, I'll ignore her for 15-20 minutes and she usually settles. If she's sad/distressed I'll give up after 5 minutes.
When she was littler, I'd try for another nap 45-60 minutes later and that usually worked. Now, I'll just assume we're doing 1 nap and adjust her schedule accordingly. If she's refusing the afternoon nap, sometimes I'll drive her around and let her sleep in the car a bit. But that hasn't happened since we started limiting or skipping the morning nap.

We are back home from vacation and J woke up at 5:15 to nurse and didn’t go back to sleep and there are no ILs to save us. H let me go back to sleep for a bit but I’m counting the minutes until nap time.
