I've always been taught to rinse my meat. The only meat I don't rinse before is hamburger.
Are we not supposed to?

If I’m roasting a whole bird I may rinse out the cavity before I pat dry and season, but otherwise no.

Sometimes chicken, especially a whole chicken. Never any other meat.

I don’t rinse because it can spread germs, and I hate touching raw meat.

No but I also don't cook that much, so, I'm probably not the authority.

I’ve never even heard of that before.

This is going to be a whole thread of why McBenny doesn't eat from people. I do not wash. With chicken, I may rinse off before patting dry. But all other meat, I just pat dry before cooking, generally. Am I doing it wrong? We have never gotten sick from my cooking, FWIW...

No, never. I sometimes dab it with a paper towel that I then throw away. I think I read that when you rinse meat you contaminate the sink and whatever the water splashes on.

I mean I also disinfect my sink daily after washing dishes so I never really think about contamination.

No, that seems like too much touching and a lot of sink germs.

I don’t rinse because it can spread germs, and I hate touching raw meat. That is what I was taught as well. You are rinsing raw meat germs into your sink which is not safe. If I need to, I pat the meat dry with paper towels and throw them away.

We've never been sick so I guess it couldn't be all wrong the way I do it

Yes, this is what I was taught. Chicken gets washed with vinegar too. Maybe #cultural

No, not at all necessary. I will pat proteins dry with a paper towel to get a good sear on them, though.

Only a whole chicken. I don't know why. I also take soap and a rag and scrub my sink 1-2 times per day. Also, when you cut meat or put raw meat on a plate and then put it in the sink, aren't you also contaminating the sink?

I guess I can see if you never clean your sinks this would be gross, but I do. I am now thinking of other places I have been for dinner between friends and both our families and all but 1 house cleans their meat before they cook.

And the 1 house that doesn't clean their meat is a house we only eat at when necessary and this was our rule even before the no rinse meat was known

The only meat that goes in the sink with water is the Thanksgiving turkey. I open whole chickens in the sink as well to help contain the mess and pat, then Lysol it after
What exactly is to be gained from washing meat? If it's that dirty, I don't want to eat it, period.

No, never. I also read years ago that it’s pointless and can actually spread germs around your kitchen from raw chicken water splashes

I don't eat meat anymore, but when I did I would usually rinse it first then pat dry with a paper towel.

When I use a cutting board, there are raw meat germs, too...

It's just washing it with water right? What's that even going to do? I guess I'm not seeing the point. Wash the blood off?

I do, but only when the meat is not super fresh. Not like it's spoiled, but if its been in my fridge a few days I do. Also only skinless meat would get a rinse and pat down.
