I wouldn't want to do this. I would want to submit correct the first time.
Just me.
This goes back to my very first post in this thread. The irs is not the huge bad guy that everyone thinks. Prople file amended returns all the time following the tax laws and it's not a huge red flag that triggers an automatic audit or anything. I wasn't speaking to the IRS. I was speaking to what I would do, I would file an extension and put it in correct the first time.

BUT, there is quite literally nothing to be gained from talking about what her or her H should have done. People are constantly flamed here for things they admit were wrong. We are consistent. Yes, you are right.

I’m sorry for your loss. For me, the obstacle was actually sitting down and adding up all those medical receipts for the taxes. It would have been insane to just proceed with the standard deduction. I mean I knew we were hemorrhaging money to pay for the medical bills, but I just didn’t want to know exactly how much at the time. In speaking with my Psychiatrist, we both agreed it would be best to wait until I was in a better place mentally. What? I understand that you couldn't do it and i am sorry that you had to deal with that, but could no one else help with that part? I would have hired someone at that point. In the end whats done is done know better do better, but 3 years was a long time to wait I totally understand what you are saying but even when you "hire" someone you still have to submit all the paperwork like receipts etc.

Ok so you don't file on time because you just can't do it that year. But it took 3 years. In 3 years you find someone to take the stack of medical receipts and add them up. As an adult you have to file yearly. You can't just wait til you are in a better headspace 3 years later. To me This is like not paying your electricity and water bill and waiting for them to realize and cutting you off. Like You were waiting for a notice from the irs. We have to adult even when we aren't up to it. And if you can't, why couldn't the husband do it or do it as a team together each doing a small part. Yea except she paid her taxes and it sounded like she was getting a refund - does the IRS come knocking on your door demanding that you take your money back? No.

Going forward, if any of you are ever in a place not to do your taxes, I’m pretty sure Brux will do them for you. She just wants to know your address and how much money you made. So ... weigh your options. And your social. And your kids. It's innocent.

I mean at this point she has gotten more flack about it from a forum than the IRS... IRS has bigger fish to fry. But personally I'd be afraid basically forever and ever amen that I'd be on some watchlist and more likely to be audited. Probably unfounded.

I'm just shocked that the IRS wasn't knocking on her door. For what? They only care if you owe.

For what? They only care if you owe. If you don't file, then how do they know if you owe? We had a client who just decided not to file for 3 years and the IRS came to his door. Once we compiled the data, he got a refund. Yeah we apparently never hit submit on SO's 2016 state ones. They were in there done just never submitted and we got a letter in November telling us to file or submit an extension. Once we hit submit we got a $300 refund

Once we compiled the data, he got a refund. Even if you don't file, if you have a W-2, the IRS gets a copy from your employer and knows your taxable income and what you had withheld by your job. So they have at least an idea of who will owe a significant amount and who won't according to that. Not sure how that works for business owners and self-employed people, though.

If a woman came in here depressed and said she couldn't do something that was actually her and her husband's shared responsibility, wouldn't most be saying, so make the dh do it? and why didn't the dh do it? If we come in and say we are too depressed to do other adult responsibility things, the board is understanding up to a point, but then we get harsh that girl you have to step up and do the right thing and get help.
Of course that ship has sailed, we are past that point, but I'm side eyeing the psych and her husband more than side eyeing the op.
I will offer a bit of a PSA--don't just let the other person do the taxes and the adult things in your home without your input. And don't just do them all yourself. Or something happens to one of you, the other person can't proceed, don't know what to do, and are in a world of hurt to just keep the lights on.
I'm the default parent in our house, but my dh knows where all the info is kept and what needs to be paid each month to keep the lights on. But when he had a heart attack, I didn't have contact info for his boss except the main corporate office number and his past boss who retired, so I didn't even know who his boss was. If he died, I'm not sure I had all the info I needed for all the benefits thru his work either. I'm trying to get all those ducks in a row still myself. Of course we are closer to the end of our lives than most of you guys.

I wouldn't call the first bit of replies as hair patting. If you read over they were actually action plan/information based.
She posted OP 04/13/18
Then she said she would get started. 04/13/18 at 5:17pm CST
Brux asked for update 04/16/18 9:37am CST
04/16/18 1:06pm CST she responded that she got 2015 in, filed an extension for 2017 and will do 2016 next weekend.
On 04/16/18 9:43pm CST was the "and totally understand why you couldn't before..."
A mere 2 posts later she got the Nikki Minaj side eye so I don't really see that as "all the head patting" but I am just one person. It's my perception. I am an army of one but alas still one person.
She didn't get the side eye. The person that said not filing for 3 years was completely understandable got the side eye.

Just chiming in here to say that we had a guy come in last year who had not filed his taxes for 10 years. Yes, seriously, TEN freaking years! It was insane. He didn't file this year, but I'm hoping he went somewhere else!
