klw keeping your mom in my thoughts, I hope the transfusion gives her some relief. <3 Long rant ahoy! I had the worst experience with a trainer last night. 20somethibg dudebro who has obviously never has no clue what he’s doing with pregnant ladies in a gym setting. At one point he tried getting me to do jump squats when I was having some major lightning crotch and needed to step squat instead. A friend even pulled him aside to ask if he realized I’m pregnant, his response: I do, now. But that didn’t stop him from telling me to keep my core tight! I tried explaining that a baby was currently splitting my abs in two and I couldn’t flex them if I tried, he doubled down and told me keeping a core tight was even more important than ever. The last burner of the night was a sit-up tabata,, which is obviously out of the question so I was doing planks instead. He came over to me as if to correct my modification but fortunately the head trainer stopped him in time. This is after a 500m in decent time and a 400m run (in not so decent time, but whatever). I’m going to have to educate this fool on pregnancy modifications, and also reading a person to determine if they’re injured/pregnant or just dogging it. I’m annoyed and insulted that it wasn’t obvious I’m pregnant, he really thought I was just super fat in my tummy? I mean, people put weight on in all sorts of places but I thought I was cute/pregnant, not fat/pregnant. Also, I’m slightly concerned I overdid it even with my modifications because I think I’m feeling less movements today than previous weeks. I still feel little kicks here and there but not like earlier this week. Wow, that’s a lawsuit waiting to happen. I guess I’d question the trainers qualifications if he didn’t know the basics of training a pregnant client.

pickles I would be really annoyed with that too. Can you complain to the gym manager Yeah, she’s great and will talk to him. I’ve been taking her class for a year and a half, 3x a week so we are pretty comfortable with each other. kam3100 I should have added this is at a CrossFit ‘box’ aka converted warehouse, not a true gym, so they often fly by the seat of their pants and have a pretty intense waiver saying you enter the building at your own risk. Ive always been a pretty vocal advocate for myself there so I have no problem telling him to back off. It’s just so frustrating that he doubled down on my core work instead of hearing what I was saying - pregnant bodies are not out of shape bodies. You cannot train me like I’m a couch potato, you lugnut. One part of me thinks I should soften my delivery, the other, more feminist side says I’m sick of having to cater to men and their fragile egos.

And people are idiots who can't tell if women are ever pregnant, or if they're 3 months or 9 months along. I was barely showing and some cashier was like any day, AM I RIGHT? No. I'm 14 weeks. Fuck you, bro. Side note- be careful with planks at this stage. Any type of core work could increase your risk of diastasis recti. I would've peed everywhere doing jump squats. Also, is he CF certified? All the coaches at my box knew what to do when I got pregnant, including keeping my heart rate fairly level, necessary modifications, everything. Or did he sleep through that part of class?

kaeguri I wear heavy flow menstral pads when I work out, because yes, it’s pee city in my pants. I believe he is certified but I’ll double check with my head trainer. He was shadowing her and maybe he just got overzealous and wanted to impress her with his intensity, I dunno. Good to know about the planks! My dr told me to keep working out and didn’t give me any warnings except working out on my back. I read an lifehacker article recently that keeping your heartbeat below 140bpm is out dated and based on no real science, just loose calculations in the 80’s. My dr said just don’t do anything I haven’t done before and to listen to my body, which I’m pretty good at anyway. I’m hoping since this is my 3rd pregnancy and I don’t have a history of diastasis recti that it’s not likely to happen this time around, but I also have no qualms about dropping to my knees during a plank when my body gives me the red light! Here’s the lifehacker article about working out hard while pregnant: vitals.lifehacker.com/the-truth-about-exercising-while-pregnant-its-okay-to-1682602976 ETA: just a quick google and I’m seeing frontal planks are a no-go at this stage?! Ugh! Do you have a modification recommendation?

pickles, yeah i've read that article. I think my coaches were just terrified of doing something wrong haha. And for me, I did notice my heart rate would skyrocket way quicker, so I kept it fairly low for comfort reasons. I was told no PRs, keep doing what I was doing, just don't push it. And to not do anything where I'm at risk of falling. Honestly, doing deadlifts and squats and other oly lifts is more than enough for your core enough at this point. Some women do planks and crunches while pregnant and don't get DR, so eh. You know your body.

pickles I would be very frustrated too. It sounds like this guy has no clue on how to modify workouts for someone who's pregnant and he needs proper training asap. I agree with the other posters here about speaking to management about him because he can really cause injury to the next pregnant woman.

I would worry that he'd give the same recommendation to someone else and they wouldn't know he has no clue what he's talking about, and injure themselves. I'd definitely mention something to the head trainer.

I'm just doing the elliptical at this point. Ours has a HR sensor thing on the handles but I'm sure it's not super accurate. I think I generally stay below 140.

I say 'at this point' like I was ever doing anything more intense/involved than the elliptical. Lol. I've got a set of 5lb free weights but they haven't been touched in forever.

pickles that sucks! My trainer today had almost the opposite issue, he took it way too easy on me. I’m fortunate enough not to have any major mobility issues but he clearly was afraid to hurt me, lol.

Welp, it hit 100 degrees in Phoenix today. I am not sure how I’m gonna last 16 more weeks. Sigh

It was 24F when I left home this morning. I am so ready for summer. Probably not a summer as hot as you ladies have but still, some heat.

The weather is still fairly mild here, with some low dips into the 40s/50s for lows. We'll get to 100 soon enough though. 😬

Two days in a row, people are shocked that I'm not due until July. I'm measuring where I'm supposed to be folks! I'm super short so of course I look bigger than someone with a long torso. Baby has no where to go but out. Damn. I'm not sure if that's better or worse than the people that have been telling me I look tired.
I'm impressed with everyone still working out. My exercise is PT, walks around the neighborhood at work, and chasing/carrying my toddler.

People need to STFU!

I am a bigger gal and I feel like I never leave the "are you pregnant or just chubby" phase. It makes me very insecure but I'm trying to let go of those feelings for this (last) pregnancy.

I slept fine last night but am totally exhausted today. I see my hematologist on the 23rd, and I'm wondering if my iron has finally taken a dive.

Interesting about the planks - I've kept doing yoga throughout this pregnancy (same class as usual, just starting to modify it for my needs in the last few weeks), and each vinyasa involves a plank, but I'm feeling it more in my arms from holding up the extra weight. I'm skipping crunches/other ab work though, because....why bother!?

I'm back from my work trip. Phew! It was jam packed and I'm glad to be done. The bad part is that I'm sick and solo parenting until late Friday. pickles - That is super concerning. He could really injure or cause harm to another pregnant person if he does not have the proper training or know-how regarding how to modify exercises. It sounds like you're going to bring it up to the head trainer, which is good, but just hearing about that pisses me off. kam3100 - And we're estimated to get 5-8 inches of snow on Saturday. Talk about extremes! I'm so sick of snow I could scream. However, 100 degree weather sounds no bueno as well.
