1. Appliances: The house is only coming with the kitchen appliances, so I need to purchase a new washer and dryer. What I have here is much older but super effective, so I don't need anything newfangled just something that can withstand at least a load today. Does anybody have a washer dryer set that they just love you ? Brands to avoid? Top load versus front load? 2. Blinds: I sent the measurements to the guy that does our blinds/shades and he won't be getting in what we want until mid-May. Because we will be in sometime in April, I need to do something for the bedrooms. Problem A: I worry less about the privacy factor for the kids rooms bc they face the back of the house, but I need something to prevent the light from coming in. Does anybody have paper blinds? Are they light filtering enough to sleep? Would this be the best plan for the interim for them. Do I buy cheap shades at target? Cover the whole thing with black out curtains? Problem B: Our room faces the front of the house, so we have to worry about light and privacy. I haven't brought this issue to the blinds guy, yet. Our windows are stacked up on each other. I can do paper blinds for the bottom set, but I don't know how to avoid light from the top. Do I hang a curtain rod from the ceiling and cover everything. And because they're angular, can I get angular shades/blinds made. Do I even want to? Here's a picture for reference:  Thanks for helping me run my life! Pdq the pic |

We have a Samsung top loader and couldn't love it any more than we do. I originally wanted a front loader, but reviews weren't nearly as good because of issues that seem to be common with all front loaders. And the price was much better, too. The set ran $900 with a sale. However, I've told my H that someday I want the Samsung set that you can hide a body in. Even with six of us, I could do my laundry in, like, three loads. $3k for the set, though.

My mom is on her second set of front loaders. And I hated them both. I hate that dog hair and even my hair collects in that valve and I have to scrape it out it's gross. And I think they just stink. Even if I dry that valve and leave the door open for the whole thing to dry before I close it, it still stinks. And depending on your laundry room situation they stick out really far. Ours are by the back door and we used to be able to have them side-by-side, but with the new front loaders being so big we had to stack them. And I hate a stacked washer and dryer. I think it's a really personal preference. Because I seem to be in the minority for hating the front loaders.

I'm super cheap so I would never spend money on blinds or curtains that I'm just going to take down and not use. I would get the paper ones for the kids rooms, and if it's not dark enough just hang a blanket over it at night. And take it down during the day so it doesn't look so tacky LOL. As for those angled windows, I have no idea.

guster if Ikea is near you, I got cheap (€40 a pair) heavy cream coloured curtains for all our bedrooms, they’re extremely long (10ft) so you can hem them any length you like. If you’re crafty you can dye them any colour you like. Maybe flamingo has a clever idea for your bedroom. I looooove your view btw! ETA if you steam or wash those curtains they shrink immensely, so if you get these, make sure you double hem them.

I hate stacked washers and dryers, too, @peach. Sounds like frontloading is not the way to go. I don't know if I understand the appeal anyway.
What do you guys know about agitators? Do I want one without the middle agitator ?

ladystrat, I didn't consider more wear and tear with the agitator, but that's a very good point. I just think I want one without it because then the space is bigger.

guster I’ve never died then either, I loooooove the light airy feel they give my bedroom. So much nicer than the old dark grey curtains  .

guster I’ve never died then either, I loooooove the light airy feel they give my bedroom. So much nicer than the old dark grey curtains . I'll definitely look into them. I have a pretty hefty IKEA gift card to spend so that might be a nice plan. I have no idea how tall the ceilings are. |

I hate my LG washer and dryer (front loader). The washer smells and the dryer has some fancy sensor that senses my stuff is dry and shuts off when the stuff is still damp. For 10 years I had the cheapest set Home Depot sold because I bought them when we were poor and I had no problem. I would get what ladystrat has. |

I have zero advice, but those windows, ceiling and view are beautiful! Thank you! Google tells me that angular blondes are not an odd thing. I think I definitely would have something on the top windows, but now I'm struggling with what kind of window treatments. Everything I'm seeing online doesn't look very modern. Wonder if I could just do Roman shades on all four windows and skip curtains and what not. |

I think if you want something on those upper angular windows, plantation shutters would be your best bet. However, whether you want shutters on just the windows in your master bedroom depends on its location on the exterior, etc—I think it would look strange to have them on just one group of windows if surrounding windows have a different treatment.
There are certain types of blinds (woven wood, cellular shades) that can be done on an angle, but typically they are stationary—so once they’re up and closed, that’s how they stay. There may be something that can be done with wood blinds by a pro. There are some motorized products on the market (Hunter Douglas ‘Duette’ is one I spec’ed a couple times) that might also allow you to cover those windows but still be able to open/close them.
Essentially I think anything you choose will be custom so you might just have to wait for your blinds installer. I’m sure he’s probably seen it all and will have good suggestions!
If you opt to not put anything on those upper angled windows (which would probably be my choice if plantation shutters are out), I would just have them tinted with something that will help diffuse the light.

If you need something temporary before your guy can come out, I’d do whatever is cheapest in bedrooms—usually mini-blinds are super inexpensive, as are the roller shades. Not the most attractive but would get the job done!

flamingo, there are lots of oddly shaped windows in this house so I don't think I would do plantation shades. If we used cellular blinds, would they be stationary because a long cord would look unsightly or because there's not a mechanism for them. We have cellular shades here or our glass room and they are motorized. We have a remote installed out of sight. I wonder if that would be a possibility

We have this and the matching dryer: www.lg.com/us/washers/lg-WT1901CK-top-load-washerI love it so much! No agitator. I like the idea of plantation shutters on those odd windows. I hate paper shades. I do cheap blackout roller shades and nice curtains. During the day the shades are up and not too noticeable but keep out the sun when closed. |

We have top loader LG. no agitator. It has saved us on water and time. It has a sensor so it only fills up based on that. Our clothes also seem to last longer.

We have blackout curtains from target. I sometimes work overnights as you know so we went for privacy and darkness over style. We ended up just doing blackout curtains in all rooms.

guster I think if you’re ok with mechanized you don’t have a problem! But yes, typically any style blind that is manually adjusted will be stationary for oddly-shaped windows—just bc of the way they operate. As far as window treatments, I would ignore the upper windows and focus on lowers, whether that’s a Roman shades or drapery panels.

We have top load washer with no agitator. I mean, it's a washer, I don't love it, but it gets the job done. I can't remember the brand, maybe Kenmore. We've had this set for about 2 years and they have been good.
I'm not much help with blinds/drapes because my decorating skills suck, but I did get some cheap darkening curtains at dollar general, like $5 a panel maybe, when we moved into our house. They have been great and since you just want something temporary, you might check them out!
