Not decorating advice but with the high ceilings I would keep the fans. It will help keep the heat down in winter

vino, i like the idea of a long vase in the landing. I can't keep anything alive so I will really have to look to find something attractive, but fake.

Yes. But you have to switch the direction and it pushes the hot air down. During warm weather switch it to keep the cool air down. We have 9ft ceilings and run them almost all the time.

I'm late but I think your instincts are good! I am far from a minimalist but with that said I don't like stuff just for stuff's sake. Personally, I would leave the wall areas you're showing blank. I'm not really a fan of things over the door, and practically-speaking the other space is too high to hang artwork or whatever--you just wouldn't be able to see it. Also, because of the high ceilings, I think the focus needs to be what's on the first floor, so that the eye knows where to go and the room doesn't seem so cavernous...so all that said I would keep all artwork, etc. on the main level. Also, I would leave the windows in the stairwell open/window treatment-free; depending on how much floor space there is in that area you could do a bench of some sort along the windows, or even a narrow console table, or like vino suggested some sort of potted plant/tree in the left corner if you feel the need to "soften" that area a bit.

I'm loving your house, guster! It's like a dream. I had no idea it was going to feel this much like home so quickly. And I still walk around, amazed that it's mine.
