I'm a huge fan of being really upfront with kids (and myself) about what's in something. We really should be eating more offal in our society. It's super nutritious, a good use of the whole animal, and (unless you're talking about brains), there's nothing wrong with it except for our cultural "ick" factor.

Every culture has a gross-looking or -sounding meat product that actually tastes amazing. Ireland has black pudding. Mmmm, black pudding. So good. What is it? I love a good meat product LOL

Mmmm blood sausage. Not enough people make it So true! It's really hard to find, even in such a heavily Irish-expat populated city as San Francisco. Boston was easier. rugger it is blood sausage. It is generally made from pork fat or beef suet, pork blood and a relatively high proportion of oatmeal, in some recipes mixed with oat groats and sometimes even barley groats, and spices. ETA: you can also get white pudding, which is the same thing only without the blood.

I tried this when we went to Ireland for our honeymoon. It wasn't bad, but I doubt I'd choose to eat it again. I'm also not a huge sausage fan so that affects how these unusual-ish foods sound too.

It's the blood that makes it tasty, not the oatmeal or rice. I once looked into buying blood to make it myself (pre-kids), but I would have had to buy something like 15 lbs and I decided that even I was skeeved by the idea of having a 15 lb blood bag.

You're close enough to Boston I'm sure you could get it relatively easily. We used to live around the corner from a little market in Brighton Center that carried all the Irish meat products, plus all the junk food like Taytos and Lucozade...I really miss it. But I'm probably just being nostalgic, like I truly feel in my heart that Supermac's is really good food but I know in my brain that it can't possibly be.

It was too chewy for me and kind of bland. I've also had head cheese (I'm not a fan of the texture). I did pass on the chickens feet, it was described as eating chicken skin, which isn't my favorite.

Okay I'm too far ahead to quote now, but reading the responses to curlie's mom issue, I wasn't paying attention to who was responding.
As soon as I got to the description of a mom sitting in the corner eating cabbage, I knew it was maple's mom.

We have a rule whenever we go eat Dim Sum that we have to try something new, so I've had pork knuckles, chicken feet, several kinds of innards, etc. Sweetbreads at a good restaurant are delicious, and I grew up loving fried chicken livers and thought the chicken heart was a special treat when my mom would fry it up for me when she made a whole chicken. I'm all about eating as much of the animal as possible, or using it for oher purposes. I found a site where you can buy all kinds of dried animal parts for dogs to chew, including tracheas, tendons, duck tongues, pig's feet, ears, etc... Smelly, but my dogs go nuts for them

I'm laughing at myself because I had read some article about how popular dim sum is becoming, and I just assumed it was some sort of Oriental cuisine and I love ethnic food so I told my husband we should try it when we're on vacation next month... but I think after reading Dramaphile's brief description that maybe that's not a kind of place I would enjoy. I'm sleep-deprived-delirious and laughing out loud at myself.

They bring tiny plates of food around for you to choose from. They just keep bringing more food until you tell them to stop, so you can eat a lot and it's a fun way to be social and eat a long drawn out meal. Dim sum that caters mostly to westerners is going to have more foods that westerners are accustomed to. And dim sum that caters more toward Chinese people is going to have more authentic food. Most are a mix of both.

I tried bone marrow once and it was surprisingly good.

I tried bone marrow once and it was surprisingly good. The best dim sum places have servers with little carts full of plates of various things. Various kinds of dumplings tend to feature heavily. My favorite are the sesame balls filled with bean paste and crispy shrimp balls, which are sort of a shrimp meatball, coated in crispy shreds of wonton wrapper and fried. If you love appetizer-type chinese food, you will definitely find a bunch of things you like. It's fun because you can get small servings of lots of things and try a bunch of stuff you might not want to commit to a whole plate of. Best done with a small adventurous group of people. Now I want to go get Dim Sum... Might need to make that happen for my birthday next month.

It's been so long since I've had dim sum. I think that I was a computer programming intern in college and I went out with my coworkers. There aren't a lot of Chinese folks in Vermont... Actually, the Chinese *thing* here is buffet, which is usually pretty gross.

If we go into Chicago, we can get great dim sum. Maybe I need to arrange for that again and find another couple to go with.

Our next door neighbors own a Chinese restaurant. The husband is actually Chinese and his parents started the place. We get invited to their house a lot for parties. When his family comes there is always excellent authentic Chinese food.
One of my favorite meals ever was the party they had when their son was a baby. It's a traditional thing and the meal was about 15 courses. Some things like chicken feet, etc that I was not a fan of, but some amazing dishes. It was so much fun.

I get very confused when MIL drops the kids off at 3:00 and sits them down with fast food she's picked up for them on the way. Did you not feed them lunch? Is this supposed to be their dinner? Do you realize I actually do know how to feed my own children? Are you trying to demonstrate that you actually feed them, since I usually feel like I'm going to starve to death at your house? I just don't get it, it throws the entire afternoon and evening off.

I had a $30 off zappos code that I just used to order a pair of sanuk yoga sling sandals that I've been wanting forever. I only had to pay 8.54. I'm excited, and I love zappos.

I'm convinced that my children put together a wake-up game plan every night to ensure that I don't get too much sleep. I imagine it goes something like this, with J calling the shots:
J- "ok M, it's your turn to wake up in the motn. Aim for like 2:30 so that you wake-up mom before her REM cycle is complete. Make sure you're super smiley and adorable so that mom can feel both annoyed and be madly in love with you at the same time. Be too happy and giggly to eat much. I'll wake up before 6, so we squash yet another REM cycle, and will cry until mom comes in my room to snuggle me. But M, make sure you wake up around 6:15 so that she has to choose which one of us to get back to sleep. Then I'll cry as mom goes to feed you, but make sure you're wide awake and adorable again M, talk and laugh really really loudly so that mom doesn't accidentally get a few more minutes of much needed rest. Meanwhile I'll fall back asleep and wait until you fall asleep M, then I'll wake up yelling loudly so that mom has to fly out of her room into mine and whisk me downstairs before I wake you up. Then mom can feel all wtfbbqeleventy all day long, and drink way too much coffee.

A wants to try making blood sausages. The problem is, it's not legal to sell in PA and can be difficult to find someone willing to give it to you. Beef bones were easy to get from our butcher (he just gave them away if people asked) but since he sold his shop, we haven't been able to get any.

My DH has spent the entire day with not a single thought about the fact that we're hosting a big party at our house tomorrow, despite the fact that I have been running around trying to get things done all day long. Suddenly, at 8 pm he realized that he had 500 things he was supposed to do. Yeah, DH, I tried to tell you!
