Rama Ugh, I’m sorry. +1 to what woodenshoes said though. I had some high and really inconsistent numbers at first. And sometimes now I will eat the exact same thing and get a way higher number than the day before. I know this probably won’t solve all your problems, but I definitely notice a high number if I don’t wash my hands right before testing. One time I tested like 15 min after washing my hands and then putting lotion on, and the number was super high so I tested again after washing and it went down like 30. This is very interesting to me. I don't usually wash my hands except for fasting because I don't have a convenient sink near me most of the time. My circulation is good/I run warm, so having cold hands has never been an issue for me producing. It doesn't solve my fasting frustration, but maybe I'll try to make a bigger effort to wash my hands before I do a meal draw. Thanks! I have noticed this too. There have been a couple times where my number is a little high, so I will go wash my hands and re-test and will then get a number in range. I don't know if it is the the short walk to the bathroom that helps or the washing the hands that helps. Today I had a 119 at 2 hours after breakfast, which is technically in range, but still higher than I wanted to see. I washed my hands and re-tested and was at a 105 a couple minutes later.

Okay, so I'm really on this train now. This morning, I took my blood before washing my hands and got 144. Got up, washed hands, retested at 109. Did similar after breakfast. Before washing, 173. Took a walk with a coworker, came back, washed hands, retested at 111. So maybe my numbers really AREN'T as high as I'm thinking and I just need to make a bigger effort in washing my hands more often? I'm already hating how they feel so dry, though.

Yeah, the hand washing thing is super weird. The dietician told me that food particles on your hands can affect the number too, like if you peel an orange then immediately test. I have had some variance in my numbers just due to the meter though. I’ve tested 3 times in a row before (same finger, no hand washing in between) and have gotten a range of 30-35.

When I was testing, I was working outdoors and didnt have sink access. I often kept an alcohol pad in my bag so I could just wipe down the finger I pricked. Maybe worth trying?

I was actually expressly told by the nurse NOT to use antibacterial hand lotion or alcohol pads because it makes the prick less effective at expressing blood. So I haven't really tried it. Also, MrRama sent me a link while I was wtf-ing this morning about a study that someone did of not handwashing versus using hand sanitizer/alcoholic pads versus washing at a sink with soap and water. The results were unequivocally best for sink washing, with alcoholic wipes being only marginally better than not washing your hands at all, even after several wipes. So, I guess, even if I don't have a handy sink, I should just try to seek them out. It's not like they're terribly far or inaccessible to me, I'm just large and uncomfortable and the less unnecessary moving I can do, I will, hahaha.

This variability makes me paranoid. Agreed. My OB basically just said there is variability in all meters, so they’re looking for a consistent pattern of high numbers rather than several standalone higher numbers. But still I wonder. If I’m only retesting when I get a number that seems unusually high, how many times am I getting an unusually low number that might not really be accurate and not retesting because it’s low and I’m happy. Rama SIL who had GD a few months ago said the same thing about alcohol wipes affecting the numbers. I work with kids so I wash my hands one million times a day and there’s always a sink nearby. But I def feel you about not wanting to get up rim my chair just to wash before testing.

I probably should not have bought urine ketone strips. I just did may first one and had a large amount of ketones. Great. One more thing to freak out about.

I was told to check for ketones first thing in the morning. The easiest way to solve it is a carb snack before bed. You will find a balance, I swear. I’m sorry, it sucks.

I had to test for ketones every morning last pregnancy and I almost always had at least trace to moderate amounts. I'm going to try a car by snack before bed like PP suggested. Last time it was usually just a cheese stick because I was still full from dinner.

Man, today's food hasn't been bad, but I'm feeling pretty woozy. I don't know if I'm just not eating enough or what, but it's not exactly fun.

I did a similar diet for awhile and was constantly feeling that way but also confused bc I felt like the volume of food was decent. Can you try adding a few snacks?

At the moment, I eat about every two hours until I get out of work. Post-lunch snack to dinner is usually 3-4 hours, depending on how long it takes to cook. As far as calories go, I ate the same things I normally do; without adding more carbs in, it's a tough spot to keep the balancing act up and I'm hesitant to start throwing more things in just to increase calories, especially since almost all of my "extra" snacks have a carb serving of at least 1.

mrsmonogrammed, I heard back from Endocrinology today and they told me they weren't worried about the ketones. I think I will continue to track just to see where I'm at but I will try to curb my freak outs a little better.

Sitting for my 3hr test now. I skipped over the 1hr bc DNW to have to come back. She said my fasting was 120 "but they could still do the test" so I can't imagine I'll be passing😔

Sorry mrsmonogrammed, if I remember correctly you've had GD before right? I had it with DS so as much as I was hoping to get a pass on it this time I knew the chances were slim, but it still stinks.

Here's hoping your numbers cooperate and you don't get the dx!

Yes I had it with my June 15 DD. And it was barely controlled even with insulin and good diet so I really didn't have much hope to skip out on it this time either. Just waiting for the official call, but I went grocery shopping and bought my go-to GD snacks and stuff for low carb dinners.

The cut off to not doing the test and failing automatically was 130. I was not surprised by my 120, that seemed to be my standard fasting last pregnancy too!

I'm pretty devoid of energy. 32 weeks this week. I feel like part of it is from the diet. Anybody else?

So...what kind of carby snacks do you guys eat right before bed? I feel like I'm not doing this right. My OB recommended a high protein snack and then the dietician recommended a 1 serving carb snack before bedtime. So idk. MH is trying to get me to eat beef jerky before bed but no thank you. I’ve been having a low carb/high protein greek yogurt, cheese stick, or small apple with peanut butter. I haven’t really noticed a difference in my fasting number whether I have a snack or not. I’m usually not hungry for a snack before bed anyway. Sorry, I’m no help.

So...what kind of carby snacks do you guys eat right before bed? I feel like I'm not doing this right. I eat dinner pretty late. If I push it and have more food around 10 or 11pm, I feel like my fasting number is elevated. If anything, I eat cheese. I don't think I tolerate the carbs as well late at night and I pretty much can't even look at a carb for breakfast.

So...what kind of carby snacks do you guys eat right before bed? I feel like I'm not doing this right. Lately I have been drinking a small class of milk with a little bit of the Special K protein cereal. With DS and earlier on with this pregnancy I was eating those dixie cup ice creams (the vanilla/chocolate or the strawberry/vanilla ones) with a cheese stick or some nuts.
