I went back to Funny Story and am liking it a lot more this time. Definitely think my reading slump is all me. My brain is crazy overloaded this month. Itβs Maycember indeed. Funny Story is definitely not my favorite Emily Henry. About half way through and I'm very meh. Part of it is the smell of pot smoke makes me ill and I'm intrinsically personally biased against heavy pot users. So part of it is me. Oh. Is there a lot of weed usage in the book? I'm not a fan either.

Yes. The male protagonist is a stoner. Mmmm, yeah, may not be a favorite of mine then. That is very much not something I find appealing. FWIW, itβs really only mentioned a couple of times and then the character later says heβs not using it (at all or frequently, canβt remember?). I didnβt find it to be an overwhelming character trait but admittedly itβs not something that would bother me either way.

I finished Funny Story today and loved it. Which was a relief becuase I hated Happy Place. 5 stars. The weed smoking bothered me at first too but it wasn't really an issue in the end
Earlier this month I read A Better World and really enjoyed it as well, 4 stars. It was a great dystopian thriller.
Right now I'm reading The Gathering and enjoying it so far. An interesting take on the vampire genre.

I just finished my first Taylor Jenkins Reid book, One True Loves. I liked it and just requested The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. I read a faith-based story similar to One True Loves a long time ago and occasionally still think about it. I wonder if this book will stick with me as much... Evelyn Hugo is one of my favorite books!

I finished eternal reign. Meh. βοΈβοΈβοΈ Itβs a good story but the writing is very repetitive and the characters are one dimensional. Iβm still waiting for my library holds to come in so Iβm starting the second one for lack of anything better.

I finished Before You Knew My Name and ended up really liking it. I wouldn't necessarily put it in the thriller category, but I'm not sure where else it would fit. It's told from the point of view of a murdered girl and the woman that finds her body. It was a slow start probably a solid 3.5, maybe a 4 star.
I have The Most Likely Club on deck to start today during the pick up lines.

I finished Funny Story. I did end up liking it and gave it 4 stars. Second half is better than the first. However the themes felt very similar to Just For the Summer and I liked that much more.

I liked them both but you are right. I did like the secondary characters in funny story just a tad better

I stayed up later than I planned on to finish The Most Likely Club. It was okay, like a solid 3. I have a couple books coming from the library over the next day or two, so Iβm going to find a reread while I wait.

I finished Stalking Jack the Ripper. I liked it a lot. I will for sure read the second book in the series, Hunting Prince Dracula. I already bought it.
Tonight just started the 3rd book in the bargainer series. Itβs under 300 pages so I am already 61% done with it.

Started & finished Seduction & Snacks between last night & today. And, I had The Love Wager come in from the library, so I also started that a little while ago.

I just finished Expiration Dates. I appreciate the particular way in which Rebecca Serle rips my heart out, chews on it, and drops it at my feet.

I started the Paradise Problem yesterday but after an indulgent day Saturday where I stayed up to late I fell asleep and didnβt get far.
I will say I donβt know if it was me being tired or what but it hasnβt grabbed me yet like her books usually do.

I finished Broken Throne yesterday - it's a short story/novella anthology for the Red Queen series - some stories take place before the events of the series, some during, some after. It was fine, 3 stars.
It was a hard copy I borrowed from the library. The print text was navy blue, and it drove me BONKERS the entire time.

I finished The Other Side of Disappearing over the weekend which is another book I didnβt like initially but really enjoyed on the second try. Very sweet romance with easy to root for characters. However itβs yet another book with childhood trauma as the central theme so I guess thatβs a 2024 trend. Iβm going to need a break from that.

I just finished Horse by Geraldine Brooks. I had low expectations, but I really enjoyed it. (I was so caught up in the story, I was weeding for 7 hours without noticing one day!) It is historical fiction inspired by real events involving a horse, horse racing, and the Civil war, and present day.
I also finished How to Fake It in Hollywood by Ava Wilder. At first it was a cute fake dating romance, but then it switched to more serious issues. Overall, I enjoyed it, but I didn't expect it to take that turn.

I'm binge reading the Blue Justice series by Lynette Eason. They are faith-based books about a family with many members in various branches of law enforcement. I was wanting a suspense novel without detailed violence or language, and these hit the spot.
Greenwich Park by Katherine Faulkner is making me so uncomfortable because of the Rachel character. She is partially why I needed a "clean" suspense novel. I think I'm going to try to finish still because I loved The Other Mothers (in spite of the heavy subject matter).

Interesting read on the term Beach read and how it used to be a negative to authors who werenβt in the romance genre. Itβs true. While I do gravitate towards βeasierβ books in the summer. I also tend to read the heavier ones too when I have a lot of outside reading time coming up. apple.news/AWhZ9Hsg7TpCbDUdEp6j1kg

I liked, but didn't love, Yellowface. I think it was a little let down by the end, though I'm not sure what I was expecting.

I finished three thrillers in the past couple of days.
I read I Know You by Claire McGowan, which was fine if forgettable. I also read Daughter of Mine, which wasnβt my favorite Megan Miranda book but I liked it. It was definitely slow but I thought the writing was solid. I gave it 3.5 stars, rounded up to 4.
I just finished The Return of Ellie Black and really loved this one. The pacing was fantastic - it was one of those books I couldnβt put down. I finished it in a couple of sittings. It had some absurd twists as thrillers often do but otherwise it was terrific.

I've finished a few books this month now. I reread both Fourth Wing and Iron Flame because I was in a rut. I also finished Romancing The Grump and Flawless. I'm 64% of the way into Heartless and just started This Wretched Valley today.
My hold on Crescent City finally came in so I'll start that after I finish Wretched Valley.
