I know there was some discussion of stopping the monthly covid specific thread, so I thought I'd do a more general health/illness thread that could continue well after April.

Not covid related, but strep has been insane this school year. We're on our second bout here sand my friend that's a pediatric nurse says everyone comes in testing positive for strep.

Strep went around like wildfire in my area about a month or two ago. Nasty. My whole house, minus me by some miracle, went down with it. I'm shocked we avoided covid and rsv this year given our ridiculous exposure (I teach middle school, H works in recreation and student staffing in higher ed, girls are in elementary school, DS in daycare). DD2 caught the flu but was fine after three days and no one else in our house got it. I'll be curious to see if there's a spring/summer covid spike this year like there has been in previous years.

I can confirm as both a school nurse and still a peds ER nurse, strep has been abnormally high this year. So much strep! Flu B is now on the rise, but not as bad as flu A earlier in the season. Next up, GI season followed by all the variations of hand foot and mouth. Fun times!

Biden is ending the emergency response and public health emergency surrounding covid. I don't really mind the optics behind this, given people don't act like there's a pandemic anymore and the cases and hospitalizations are nothing compared to what they were at the onset of things. It does suck that testing and vaccines won't be free to all anymore though, from what it sounds like.
Also, there's a new non-omicron variant that's ripping through India right now. It's started to be picked up on tests in the US and it's suspected to squash out omicron because it reproduces so rapidly. And it's resistant to omicron antibodies, so previous omicron infections won't protect you. So we might have a summer spike. Sounds like it's not anymore harmful or deadly than what's currently circulating though, which is good.

Amazing news! My girls had flu and RSV at the same time a few years back. DD2 was only 2 months old and ended up spending three days in the hospital for breathing issues and treatment. I would love to see an RSV vaccine come to market!

H is pretty sure he caught strep from DS2. I’ve had post nasal drip for a few days but I’m guessing I’ll need to get swabbed too. Bleach. I’m over all of these damn germs.

I am going to say that for my mental health, I am glad that the hospitals are lessening up on some of the restrictions. I mean, masks are still required (which is good), but other things. We were at CHOP with DD in 2021, and when I was there with her DD2 wasn't allowed to visit, all playgroups were disbanded and the family lounges were closed. Now DD2 can visit; play groups are reopened and the family lounge is open again. So now DD is connecting with other kids and I am connecting with other adults and I feel like even though it is a super stressful situation, our mental health is better than it was in 2021.

We had multiple extended hospital stays for DD2s traumatic injury back in summer of 2020. The covid restrictions were so insane and so frustrating. I'm glad they've lessened them it's made your stay easier. Hopefully you guys are out of there soon❤️

From what I’ve read, the new variant spreading through India (XBB.1.16) is a sub variant of Omicron. It’s still way more transmissible and could cause a spike but it’s encouraging that this virus seems to be staying in the Omicron lineage.

I had my first injection today as part of a mod.erna study for an mRNA based C.MV vaccine (putting periods to keep it off google). Obviously I have no idea if I have the placebo or the actual vaccine but it feels cool to be part of scientific advancement.
They had to test first to see if I had already had CMV virus antibodies because their positive cohort was already full so I had to be negative to continue. I was, which actually somewhat surprised me after I started reading how common it was for adults to have gotten it at some point.

willow, that's really cool. My husband had a hell of a time with CMV a few years ago. I hope the trial goes well.

That's great willow ! I tried to sign up a while ago but didn't meet all the requirements MIL had a bad case when she was working in a daycare on 2012. She's a bit dramatic with the illnesses though 😬 She went to the ER for strep thought a couple months ago because the urgent care "looked busy"

Very cool willow ! I feel silly that I've never heard of it but sounds pretty common? Yeah I had never heard of it either, until I got emailed about this study. Most adults don't know they've had it because it mimics so many other viruses and it usually causes mild symptoms. The risk is for if a pregnant woman gets it, she can pass it on to her fetus and cause birth defects, so the vaccine is geared toward having it available for pregnant women some day.

But what about a vaccine for babies and littles? Like what good would it do if the PICU is full of older neonates with RSV? The 9mo being exposed to RSV isn’t gonna have his moms protection 9/10mo later. I know it would help obviously for some but so many kids are >6mo that end up hospitalized w RSV.

I was wondering this also. Like how many months is it effective for? And I hope they're working on one for post birth babies and toddlers.

Article says “The vaccine was 82 percent effective during the babies’ first 90 days of life and 69 percent effective during the first 6 months.” And it talks about Synagis but the criteria for it is so intense many of our nicu babies don’t even qualify and it’s only for the first season so if a kid is born in November or December goes home in Jan / Feb they’re still high risk next fall but don’t qualify for Synagis. I think I’m just bitter with ptsd from BabyO’s RSV hospital stay. Womppp

I would hope that the next step is looking into a vaccine for children, but based upon our covid vaccine experience, I would expect it’s going to take awhile.

She was 2 months when she was hospitalized. I am glad they're making progress. I really hope they can get a vaccine for the youngest group. They're the ones who genuinely need it the most.
