I watched the first episode (HBO) and I think I like it. It’s by the same creators as Downton Abbey but set in New York in the 1880s I think. So far it’s similar to the appeal of Downton and I like the characters (especially the aunts.) Anyone else watching?

I plan on watching it tonight. I wanted to watch it last night, but then I discovered it didn't drop until like 9pm, so that was off the table. I'm excited - I needed a new period piece

I thought it was a great first episode and a good introduction to the main players. I'm very interested to see where it goes, but I'm rooting for the "kids" or younger generation. I wonder if there's a real world inspiration behind Peggy Scott. I deeply want her to succeed.

Present!
The first ten minutes of the show I was like "Marian reminds me so much of Mamie Gummer" and then I finally googled and it's her sister. Ha.
I love Christine Baranski and Audra McDonald and I'm just patiently waiting for Nathan Lane to show up.

The different last name threw me when I checked the cast quickly on Google but then five minutes later, I was like "I don't know..." and looked her up specifically.

I have gotten through the first 30ish minutes. I think I will like it and just need to give it a bit of time. I love all the actors in it so far. I love Downton so I assume I’ll love it.

whelp, this may finally be what tips me into the "pays for HBO subscription" DAMMIT! I love all things Christine Baranski, Nathan Lane, and period piece; looks like I'm moving in here, hope there's room.

For those that like podcast the official HBO one interviewed Julian Fellows and Christine Baranski. They talked a lot about how and why this time period was chosen and about which of the character are based on specific people versus combinations of multiple people of the time.

I subscribed to HboMax because of And Just Like That but I think I made it through 3.5 episodes before I quit it. I’ve been watching Ghosts and Hacks and now I want to start this.

I had some thoughts, which I typed up in my head at 3 a.m. the other night. And forgot by morning. Anyway, here's some randomness:
1) Mrs. Russell seemed a little OTT in her grasping. I hope they will flesh her out a bit and not make her a caricature.
2) I hope Mr. Whatshisname, the lawyer from her little town in Pennsylvania, will get a job in the Big Apple and make some future appearances. He seems nice.
3) I enjoyed the intentional callback to the opening pilot scene of Downtown Abbey (following the delivery of the bad news about the Titanic, and in this one, the bad news about the brother) as a way to introduce the downstairs characters.
4) I'm trying not to be biased against the main character because of my dislike of Meryl Streep (I know, who dislikes Meryl Streep, sorry). She's lovely, but her acting seemed a little stiff. Hoping she will grow on me.
5) The aspiring journalist got more screen time than I expected, which was nice.
6) I was wondering how I would like Cynthia Nixon in the role, because it's hard not to see her as anyone but Miranda. I actually thought she disappeared pretty well into it in this episode, and she has a face that suits period drama.
7) I miss accents. I just love British history. I feel like this topic will never be quite as interesting to me, but maybe I'll be surprised.

I actually thought Marian looked a lot like the actress who played Diana in The Crown. And as stated, Bookshelves summed it up pretty well for me. I’ll stick with it but I’m only rather whelmed, especially when the Russells are on screen.

I know that I am years and years late on Downton Abbey but I just finished it two week ago. I am missing it so I am excited about having this one to watch now.
I do love that there is actually some POC representation.

So, I do not care for Mrs. Russell. She is so loud and pushy and try-hard, as I'm sure the character is supposed to be, but I feel like that's a bit of a cop-out. She lacks dimension. Maybe we're supposed to love-to-hate her? Likewise, Aunt Agnes is the predictable stodgy matriarch but she's served better by Christine Baranski. She's got that quieter disdain working for her.
Loved Mr. Russell's total boss move there at the end.
