I’m very attracted to Mr Russell. He has the energy I like when it comes to his wife and family.

I liked this episode a lot. I think we are starting to develop storylines. Some are very predictable (like the maid hitting on Mr Russell). I like the possible love triangle. I want to know why the writer needs a lawyer. I know no one’s name except Mr Russell. I need a study guide.

I'm trying to remember how long it took to get into Downton Abbey. I can't help but think how much better this would be with British accents.

The lawyer creeps me out. I don’t like him for her. Yes. There's a vibe about him that wasn't there so much in the first two episodes, but was definitely there in this one. Like, won't take no for an answer and become a psycho stalker or vengeful prick. Marian feels inauthentic, a bit. It's great that she knows her mind and disagrees with her circle shutting out new $ women/families, but the strength of her opinion against people she still barely knows is too ballsy for the time period.

I don't love Mrs. Russell's character but I am fascinated by her voice. It’s very old Hollywood, reminds me of Eleanor Parker.

So I’m wondering if the lawyer has found that her father has money somewhere. He seems very eager and it’s odd.

I am only on the 2nd episode but I shouted (to no one as I am watching this alone) "It's Juliette Simone! AND Maureen's cunty mom!"
(Center Stage references)

(Center Stage references) You and my H have the same talent of placing supporting cast. He was like "Doc Oc's wife!" when he saw Mrs. Astor because we rewatched all the earlier Spiderman movies a couple months ago.

Haha it’s true, I do it a lot with actors that frequently get recurring character parts. I just found it amusing to see two Center Stage actors in the same show so many years later.

I am glad Mr Russell rebuffed what's her name, but it's going to come back to bite him that he's letting her stay and keeping quiet about her attempts.
Marion deserves a whole lot of egg on her face for that shitty presumption.
Agree that something momentous needs to happen soon. Fascinating as the era is, it's feeling very snoozy and predictable. I hope Nathan Lane invigorates things.

Nor do I find her particularly interesting, I would much prefer a focus on the staff. What’s bowler hat guy’s secret? Is that cook gonna have a gambling relapse? Marian is annoying and boring I’d even take more backstory into the aunts and the older dolls of society. Also I hope they’re gonna expand on the upwardly mobile Black people of that era.

I agree with all of this. I love Christine Baranski but her character is one-dimensional and repetitive at this point too.

I think there are almost too many characters, that the story has to bounce too around quickly. Downtown Abbey you had the upstairs and downstairs. Here you have the upstairs and downstairs of two houses, plus the racial issues which is a whole separate story line, and we keeping seeing into the lives of the more minor characters. It’s not focused.

Marian is annoying and boring I’d even take more backstory into the aunts and the older dolls of society. Also I hope they’re gonna expand on the upwardly mobile Black people of that era. This is generally Julian Fellowes’ ongoing problem. He is so infatuated with the upper class that he often gives lower-class characters short shrift, in my opinion. I think it was most evident in the Downton Abbey movie. Except for Thomas, the below-stairs characters, who had had interesting story lines at various points during the series, were reduced to caricatures. Just there for comic effect. I haven’t paid attention to writing credits on this series. I’m hoping the rest of the writers on the series handle the economic and racial diversity well. Any attempts to introduce racial themes on Downton Abbey were pretty awkwardly handled, at best. Marian’s story feels like one that has been told over and over. Poor little rich girl pressured to marry well. Yawn. I almost cheered when Peggy walked into the newspaper office and helped with the press. More like that 🙌
