Honestly for me it was by working out in my garage. Just get comfortable with your workout. What raises your heart rate? I was scared I was doing it wrong. So, I practiced before going. And remember the only people staring at you are the ones who are only looking to make sure you aren't looking at them. From the person who doesn't go to the gym and prefers the garage. 😬 If you workout in your garage, can I ask why you want to go to the gym? Classes? Different equipment? I have access to 2 gyms at work and entitled to time off during the day to work out so I really should go. I'm just fighting social anxiety. I think I may just had to bribe myself into going at a quiet time. Going during a slow time is a good way. That way you can get comfortable in the setting. Then if you have to go during a busier time, it won't be a new place. Trust that most people are either as intimidated as you are or are too worried about what they are doing to even notice you.

Is there a trainer available? Many gyms offer free or deeply discounted time with a trainer to help ease you into getting comfortable. They know most people stop going because of just what you're talking about.
Slow times are a good call. Just like working out (or most things) the best and most effective way to over come your fear is slow steady calculated steps toward where you want to be. Slow is smooth, smooth is quick. Lol! You can't just pick up a million pounds...it's too much. You might freak out in a crowded gym. But just like the weight, try not to feel bad. It's an unrealistic goal...for now. But you'll start associating the gym with dread and feeling bad if you do.
I'm not one to talk though. I prefer the garage. 😜 "I teach this shit, I never said I was any good at it." Says the person who assists others with behavioral change for a living, but constantly falls short in changing their own.

Checking into a couple sessions with a trainer can be super helpful. That would at least get an idea of a good routine and you have someone there to help you run the machines the first times through them.
If I am trying out a new version of a lift, I always do it at home first. The guys I train with are always "OMG I've never seen you do that and it's perfect first time". Yeah, because I've been doing it in my basement for 2 months. You guys don't get to see me completely biff it. Usually.

I wasn't sure where to share this victory post, so here goes.
I've been working out for two months now and I had my first body analysis done since starting. I've lost 15 lbs of body fat and my body fat percentage is down 5%. I'm so proud of myself and can't wait to see those numbers continue to drop.

I ran my 10km this morning in 1:01. I'm so proud of myself for being so close to the hour mark.
Thank goodness it's fathers day and we have no big plans except yummy food for dinner.

And I assume you didn't hit any trash cans? Lol! A medal and yummy food are the best reasons to run races IMO.

I'm taking a 30-minute bootcamp class tonight that is being taught by a woman I follow on social media. She is crazy buff and I'm kind of scared.

Embarrassing question: how do you all get comfortable at the gym? I have no problem working out in my garage but just thinking of hitting the gym by myself raises my heart rate. + 1 for working with a trainer in your gym for a session or two. I think that's a great way to boost your confidence. And it's true no one whose opinion matters will be looking at you. Anyone with the audacity to judge someone in the gym trying to better themself is the lowest of low. Just wear something comfortable, put your headphones on, zone out, and go hard!

Mind if I join? I crossfit (please don't hate me ) and last night we did running and cleans after I did a 5 mile run on Sunday, my legs are a little toast today so restday it is.
ETA I'm going to try one of these push-up challenges, I really suck at those, maybe I can get to a point of doing 10 in a row, that would be great.

@winomite, good for you! That's the exact reason I love CrossFit people ( loveswaffles - no hate from here...plus I too love waffles). I hate their workouts, in a good way, but it's never about beating the person next to you. It's about being better than you were yesterday, last week, last month and everyone is just excited that you PR'd and could careless if they crushed your time or if you crushed theirs. ::gets off CrossFit cult culture soapbox::

I decided to focus on my arms this summer because I've always wanted more toned arms. Yoga helped a lot, but I've been doing this video for about a month now and yesterday I was complaining to MH about this knot in my arm and he was like "um, I think that's a tricep." So, mission accomplished?

I've been managing to get in 2-3 elliptical workouts a week. 20-30 minutes each. But I know I can do better. Most weeks it's only twice. I can definitely do three and make them 30 minutes each.

So, I've been feeling pretty defeated since figuring out last week that I probably have diastasis recti and all the ab workouts I've been doing for months have been making it worse. ☹️
I've also been grumpy and lazy due to the hot weather and possibly other reasons.
I did a BBM maintenance routine today but had to skip or modify moves I shouldn't be doing. I think I need to find something else to do because it's very frustrating and annoying. Which I'm bummed about because I've really liked those workouts and they fit well into my busy days.
So, blah. 😤

Have you done any research into correcting the diastasis, @rocknroll? There are exercises you can use to replace what you're currently doing until you feel it's gotten better.

I'm laughing in a good way imapenguin. I have had some awful workouts while being on a cut. It's expected, but I forgot how much it absolutely sucks.

Yesterday's cardio was a circuit between the inclined treadmill and rowing. Damn, that rowing is tough!
Today I'm doing a higher resistance level on the stationary bike.
I haven't gone for a run since the treadmill fucked me over last week. I really need to pick that back up.

Just got home from crossfit - we did wallballs, handstand pushups and power cleans and I will not be able to use my arms for the next day or so. But felt good to do a tough workout again, to push hard and see how I stack up against the last time I did this (not great but hey, it happens)

So I sort of had this epiphany and I am not sure where else to put it. I went from 192lbs to 157 in 6.5 months. Today I was kind of catching my own reflection in the mirror and making a mental note of what still looked flabby, when it dawned on me that H never once..not in 14 years...has ever said one negative thing about my body or ever made me feel anything else than perfect for him.
I ran out and gave him a hug. Sometimes we ignore gifts when they are staring us right in the face.

To add context, the past two relationships I was in before H had certain elements to them: relationship A was with a semi-pro baseball player who would tell me I would have a really good body "if I tried" and relationship B was with an uber rich guy who was superficial and really placed an emphasis on how I looked.
