The manslaughter trial for Officer Yanez, the officer who shot and killed Philando Castile during a traffic stop in Minnesota last summer, began yesterday. He's the first officer to be charged with killing someone while on duty in Minnesota, and one of only 80 or so officers who have been charged in the United States. I just learned about a podcast that tells more about the story and will be following the trial. I listened to episode 1 (four have been released so far) and I'd love to have more people to talk about it with. This story is so close to home for me in a million different ways. www.mprnews.org/story/2017/05/26/74-seconds-podcast-episode4-the-aftermath

Thanks brux! These cases are hard. I follow the Van Dyke/Laquan McDonald case here and it continues to be awful.

This has always made me feel sick, I hope against hope the Castile family gets the justice they deserve and officer Yanez pays for what he did.
The four year old in the backseat just haunts me. So awful.

The first podcast brought up the fact that families of people killed by police feel that they need to provide evidence that the person killed didn't deserve it. Clip after clip of people saying "he wasn't in a gang, he had a job."
Because they know the police and media will be digging for any little character flaw to exploit in the hopes it can justify the officer's actions.

It's so frustrating because they shouldn't have to do this. No matter his background at that moment he was a man in a car with a tail light out. Innocent until proven guilty.

Gross ETA: This American Life recently had an episode (maybe 2?) on police shootings that was really interesting and heartbreaking. I'd recommend that as a companion piece to this.

It's beyond fucked up that the worth of a victim's life needs to be proven to the public.

It reminds me of those videos of Muslims putting a blindfold on and being like, "I am Muslim, will you hug me?" These people shouldn't be required to do this shit in order to be seen as people.

swellist, I feel like it goes even deeper than "they deserve it." Given that a majority of the shootings are black men, it's a fight against the automatic racial stereotype of the African American male as a scary thug. Even if they didn't deserve it, they are menacing figures, and obviously the police were threatened by the intimidating presence. That's what's so gross about it. The "he wasn't in a gang" and "he had a job" is an attempt to say "He isn't scary or threatening."
