What is an au pair? I've never heard of it. I'm a sahm so I'm not looking for childcare, but I'm curious.

Paying for childcare is the worst, here there are some rebates, but it still ends up costing me $210 for four days for DS until I run out of rebate in Feb when it will double! When DS2 is born I will be on mat leave for awhile though so I’ll drop DS1 down to maybe two days at daycare. The rebate thing is changing July next year so that will help a little.

Today has been...a weird day. DH accepted a job offer with a new company and turned in his notice at his current job late last Tuesday. On Thursday morning, he found out that his whole department (at his current company) was going to be laid off this week. Primarily, we're extremely thankful that DH has another job lined up already, and really sad for his coworkers that hadn't seen the writing on the wall and are just now starting the job hunt. There's a very small part of me that wishes the timing would have worked out differently, because the severance pay would have been very helpful with the pay cut DH is taking and the end-of-year bonus he's missing out on at his old job.
The layoffs happened today (happy birthday to me) and DH is understandably in a funk. He's in a weird position since he'd officially quit before the layoffs, and he's not sure if they're going to have him stick around through the end of his two weeks' notice. It just sucks that the company he's been working at for 7+ years will be going under by the end of the year. It doesn't have high turnover, so we've really gotten to know his coworkers well and up until recently, it's been an amazing job for him and for our family.
Sorry for the total novel of word vomit. I hate these transition periods especially with major life things like jobs.

I hate sleeping on my side. My hip starts to hurt after a while so I end up tossing and turning most of the night. Ugh yes. My hips start hurting so badly. Saturday night was awful and I think I rolled over every hour and a half. I felt so bad for DH.

Rama yay for the low risk designation!! That must be so relieving! cornpop I am sorry baby was still not moving much during your scan. We have had the same issue in that baby girl has been super difficult at every scan and doesn't want to move for the tech. We have our repeat a/s on Friday and I really hope she is more cooperative!!

I hate the cold, and shoveling snow, especially at 4:30 a.m. 😩 Wish I could fast-forward to bedtime.

OMG!!! You guys all need to get au pairs!!! The other fun part about living in a VHCOL area is that housing costs are so high, most people literally don't have the square footage for an extra person. I barely have the space for baby!

katietopaz I'm sorry he is missing out on the severance pay but so so happy he already has a job lined up with these lay offs coming. We just went through the same thing with DH (although he had only been there a year) and I am so happy he was able to transition from one job to the other quickly. Waiting it out to get severance was a chance we didn't feel was worth it. You did remind me too that he is missing out on his bonus this year which does stink. But he has a job! Hopefully they will let your DH finish like you guys had planned!

I barely have the space for baby! I feel you calendula! It’s just like wow. DH is from Boston and all his family is there but between the weather and COL we’ll just hang out in the south. But a decent daycare in our area runs around $325 a week for an infant and $250 for a 3 year old so I guess it only makes sense you guys pay so much up there.

I agree - we had the same conversation about whether he should wait it out for the severance pay, but I'm relieved we didn't. It took him two months to find this new job, and it was a better situation because he was able to be picky. He could take the time to find a job/company that he thought was actually a good fit and career move, instead of feeling like he had to take the first job offer he got because we needed the paycheck ASAP. We figured that even if they tell him he doesn't need to come in through his last official day, he still gets the pay, so he'd almost rather that. I'm just excited for him to get started at his new job and feel positive and encouraged again.

katietopaz sorry about your DH’s situation but awesome that he already had something lined up. I know it’s tough thinking about the bonus and severance but if he just started looking for a job now who knows how long it would take being the end of the year when things slow down, AND he’d probably be competing for every job with his coworkers.

katietopaz, I'm glad your H was able to find a new job, although I'm sorry he won't get the severance pay. Maybe he can start the new job early if they decide not to keep him the full two weeks.

I've had a horrible headache since yesterday and Tylenol does nothing. I've been getting weekly headaches the fast few months and I'm over it. I never got headaches during my pregnancy with DD.

On the fly post:
Saw MFM - baby looks great and measures perfect with her dates! Confirmed two vessel cord but she has both kidneys and 4 chambers in her heart - will have a more detail heart look in a month. Twin sac is still hanging around. It’s about 4cm.

Hope you had a Happy Birthday, sorry I missed it yesterday <6 katietopaz. That sucks about your DH, so stressful. I quit a job about a week before layoffs missing severance and it sucked. Good Luck on your scans nevertoomanyshoes & kayladawn91 We already pay a ton more a month in daycare costs then for our mortgage, big reason I'll be staying at home after #3.

What is an au pair? I've never heard of it. I'm a sahm so I'm not looking for childcare, but I'm curious. An au pair is like a live-in nanny, it is an exchange program for foreigners. You give them room & board, a small weekly stipend, and they provide full time childcare. They have to have verified childcare experience and you interview them just like you would a nanny. We couldn’t afford daycare for two in my area, and a nanny was even more expensive, but we have a guest room so we got an au pair. Saves us about $1,000 a month compared to daycare.

I am 99% sure we will not have to go with conventional day care due to our work schedules. At the most I think we will need a few hours a few days a week while DH and I switch shifts. So far it seems like we will be able to coordinate this with family, mostly my mom.
DH also just got a huge raise which is AMAZING AMAZING and seriously opens up my options as far as my working/schedule. I doubt I will be able to choose to stay home but even the possibility of being PRN (as needed) or working part time is nothing short of a miracle after everything we have been through. I am excited I should be able to create a much more flexible schedule.
Every single one of my worries about our financials surrounding a baby has had to do with affording childcare. Basically it was going to leave us with zero extra dollars at the end of the month. So few people understand the expense of childcare now. My mom was always like, babies don't have to cost you anything, you don't HAVE to buy all that baby stuff.
DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA HOW MUCH CHILDCARE COSTS WOMAN?!?!?

DH FELT THE BABY MOVE LAST NIGHT!! Lol nuggetrn my mom SAH and doesn’t really have a ton of empathy for working parents. She has zero idea about the cost of DC. It’s so frustrating but for the sake of our relationship I’m working on ignoring it. I’m so glad you’ll have that flexibility with a new baby!! I could never have an au pair bc i hate having overnight guests in my house. I need my space at the end of the day 😂 even DH and I go to separate rooms for a bit each day.
