Height: 38.5 inches, 16% Weight: 33 lbs, 13% Any shots? 4, 2 in each arm. He told me "He should be arrested. That man should, for what he did to me. I cried and screamed and he hurt me" *heart shatters* Things the dr. noted: His personality is the hardest to potty train... Great. What are you looking forward to the most about them being 4? Hopefully, potty training. Other than that, just seeing his personality come out. He's such an old soul but still so funny. What are you not looking forward to? Having to share him with the world. I so want him to go to school and learn and grow. But the thought of me not being there to protect him, scares me.
The boys were very hyper while we were there and it was a new nurse and I didn't care for her at all. He wouldn't do his eye test (he refused at 3 too) so I'm not sure about that. It was just a stressful appointment.

peachsmama,do you think J would potty train soon? I wonder if you should work on him and then M will follow suit not wanting to be outdone.

Jack has pooped on the potty once and peed a few times. It's not consistent but he'll randomly decide he wants to do it. He said to not act negatively about Peach not doing it but to praise Jack insanely so that hopefully Peach will get jealous and want that same attention. I'm going to do that until Christmas then I think I might try naked or underwear again. Can't I just hire this part of parenting out? Ugh.

Eye tests are done at the Dr? Don't the kids go to the optometrist?

Eye tests are done at the Dr? Don't the kids go to the optometrist? At this age they do a basic test at the pedi. If the dr. feels something is off, then they will refer to an optometrist. Or at least that is the gist I got when trying to get Cadence in to see the optometrist. They kept asking who referred us and why we wanted to be seen. Uh...for a basic eye exam?

I took C to an optometrist a couple years ago just because they thought there were issues. Otherwise, super quick and basic test at the pedi. They just stand back and have to name the shapes they see on the board while covering each eye.

Once they are a certain age (which I'm not sure what that is yet) they go once a year to an eye Dr. unless there's issues.

Okay, tell me if it's me or if this is how all Doctors do it. I took M in for his 4 year check up and I asked if he could just check J's ears to make sure his infection from 2 weeks ago was gone. They had to get us into another appointment slot and do weight, heights and all that just to look in his ears! I was so annoyed. Like if they look infected, sure do the weight so we can get the right dosing but lord- They were fine. They wasted so much time.
My sitter said her pedi checks both her kids ears every time even if the appointment is just for one kid because it's such a common thing at this age/time of year.

We had letters on our chart and then she matched them to letters on a page that I held since she refused to say letter names. Towards the end she started just pointing randomly, so we decided it was fine for now. The hearing test was fun too. "Raise your hand when you hear a beep." My child just sat and laughed every time she heard the noise because screw rules and guidelines, she does what she wants.

They didn't do a hearing test for C, unless I'm totally blanking which I so could be since both kids had appointments at the same time and it was chaotic to say the least.

peachsmama, our well checks and sick checks are billed differently, so if the well check turned into a sick check (infected ears, cough, etc.) then it would be billed, whereas well checks are free under our insurance. I'm sure some pedis would be fine with just doing a quick check though.

I'm sure they also have to document on it and I'm not sure how that works if you don't have a scheduled appointment, especially if his ears hadn't been fine. I've never needed to ask for something like this though so no clue how our dr handles it. I can see how it'd be frustrating when they can easily just look in the other kids ears though.

I know others here have had their other child checked during the other kids appointment but given my experience in the vet world, I would never ask. It may be a quick look in the ears but the time it takes to write it up, do an rx, etc cuts into other people's times. It also cuts into charges as well when you are dealing with insurance. There was nothing more annoying than someone bringing in their other dog as "company" and then asking us to "quickly check" something. It is never actually quick even if it seems so to the client.

That was my point. Like it takes 2 seconds. Oh they're fine, great! No need for 15 minutes of questions and weight and height and all that. I think it's the new receptionist and nurse. I miss Paula, the old receptionist. She was the best.

Here kids go to the optometrist from basically birth to 18 and it's covered by provincial health care. I took B when he was 3 last January, and the Dr encouraged me to bring in J anytime.

No vision or hearing test at H’s check ups. Her school had a free vision screening a couple of weeks ago (that I forgot to fill out the paperwork for so she didn’t get it done) otherwise you would need to make an appt with an eye doctor. The school for the deaf does free hearing screens and if I was concerned I could take her there. peachsmama it sounds like your doctor was just going by the book. I took H in a few weeks ago and they looked in S’s ears quick too when I asked, no problem.

I don't recall an actual hearing or vision test at the check up. The pedi looked at her ears and eyes and asked if I had any concerns, but I don't remember much more than that.
I can't imagine my 4 year old sitting in a chair at the optometrist for a check up. Lol

M had a vision & hearing test. Just basic stuff. vino Here you have to have vision insurance to go to an optometrist. Your medical doesn't cover it unless it's something like an infection or my lovely blepharitis while pregnant.

peachsmama Our pedi is the same way. When I got H's ears checked during M's 4year appt I had to do a whole appt slot just for him. He had to be weighed, temp checked, etc. They have to bill it correctly and that's their criteria for "sick" appointments. Probably depends on the practice. THey also acted like they were doing me this HUGE favor by squeezing him in. It seriously took 5 seconds to look in his ear but I know the pedi had to do a write up about it so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Height: 39” Weight: 35lb She had 2 shots- combos of dTap, MMR, chicken pox and polio. It was bad. She gets so much anxiety and was crying and pulling away at just the alcohol swab. Even worse, she was overdue for some lab work and that was a complete and utter shit show. She was going so crazy and flailing so much after they got the needle in, that the lab tech decided to stop. They were able to fill enough for one vial but she will have to go back for one more. MH is going to take her. Are you guys close to a children's hospital? We go there for draws, they're much better at it than the pedi's office, IME.

O Height: 41.25 inches Weight: 40.5 lbs Shots: flu and tetanus booster. He needs two more shots before Kindergarten. O cried big time about the shots. He said he never wants another shot again. He also said he never wants to go back to the doctor again. They tested his vision and hearing. He passed both. Then the doctor asked him a lot of questions and had him do a few physical tasks. He also checked various body parts and he told O how nobody should ever pull O’s pants down like that except mommy and daddy. And only a doctor if mommy and daddy are there. I never even thought of telling O those things. I guess i need to. Our pedi said the same thing. Our pedi does this too.

I'm team wedding with the checkup on the second kid. If I hadn't worked in billing and records though, I probably would also think doing it is NBD.

Sierra had her well check today.
Height - 39” (17%)
Weight - 31.4 (14%)
Any shots? Nope! They do the next round at 5!
Things the dr. noted: she was happy to see her progress developmentally.
What are you looking forward to the most about them being 4? Potty training hopefully!! And just seeing her progress. I would love to have a reciprocated conversation with her one day! We are still stuck on 1-2 words.
What are you not looking forward to? Nothing! I love watching her grow and develop and learn new things! Just yesterday I heard her counting. She made it to 10! But won’t do it when I ask. I have to “catch” her doing it. She also can appropriately name her colors. Again only if I “catch” her. Never if I ask her. But for instance while watching the news the weather came on and the weather map popped up and it had green all over it. She looked at it and said green, then the screen changed to another color and she said it. She ended up doing 6 different colors appropriately right then. It warms my heart to see that kind of progress we’ve been working so hard towards. She’s got it in there...I just need to get it out of her!

I would have probably preferred a board book so I could have started reading it when he was younger, but this particular one is right for the age they are now.
