I meet with the diabetes center tomorrow. I'm dreading what they have to say since I don't have any idea what my 1 and 2 hour levels were at when I failed. I'm also struggling with snacks. I don't eat a lot of dairy and I feel like cheese and yogurt are in a ton of the recommendations. Does anyone have a snack they enjoy? Almonds are a good choice. I also do peanut butter with the whole grain crackers I bought. These: I also like apples with peanut butter. My other snacks usually involve cheese or yogurt so I am no more helpful than this.

I had my first appt today and it was information overload. Learning the meter, learning the diet, then I had to have an ultrasound for the baby's growth, then the doctor was worried about where my umbilical cord was so I had to have a vaginal ultrasound too.
Sigh. It was just overwhelming.
I just did my first reading and my numbers were good but it took me two tries and 20 minutes to do it!!
I have a question for those of you who work in an office setting. How do you fit all the readings into your day?? I have a job where I'm in meetings constantly. Do you put it on your calendar? I think that's what I'm going to have to do. And I think I'm going to have to schedule meals on my calendar too so I can test appropriately. It's a real PITA. Do you know how close to 2 hours on the dot you have to be with your readings???

Do you know how close to 2 hours on the dot you have to be with your readings??? Your numbers shouldn't be changing dramatically if you test 15 minutes early/late, possibly even longer. We are human, we are going to lose track of time a little (or a lot, sometimes I forget to test altogether). If it isn't 2 hours on the dot I wouldn't be too concerned unless it was an hour late or something crazy.

I had my first meeting today. Overall I really liked the Dr. she was honest with me that insulin resistance does happen but it’s not anyone fault if i end up at some point in it but she’s really conservative with her numbers so that she hopes to do as diet controlled as possible.
I have to change up a few things in my diet like actually adding in more starches than what I have been eating but she made sure to make me know that I can have treats and that people are human and just account for them on my log so they know why it’s a spiked number potentially.
So I have to test fasting in the morning, 1 hour after breakfast, lunch and dinner. Goal is 120 an hour after each of those meals. She doesn’t add in testing for snack times unless your on insulin.

I had a burger from Wendy’s for dinner. I know it was not the best choice. I paired it with a salad so it wasn’t too awful. My 2 hour later reading was still under 120 but not as low as most of my readings. I feel a little guilty. I will see the dietician tomorrow so I will see what she says about that.

As long as it was under 120 you are fine. Lower isn't always better and you do need carbs. I had a large smoked sausage with a hot dog bun and Cheetos for dinner. We are low on groceries and didn't want to cook since we are going out of town tomorrow. My post dinner reading was 138, higher than it has been in in awhile. My fasting number and other readings today were awesome, so the trend is in the right direction, I just wish I knew exactly what was going on. I had similar carbs for lunch and my post lunch reading was 107. I'm guessing the white bread bun versus a multi grain sandwich thin was the difference, but who knows.

I'll be joining you guys I took the three hour today and two of the blood draws were abnormal, so here I am. I am 26 weeks due at the very end of this group, so I still have quite a while left to deal with this I really have no idea what I'm doing, but reading this thread has been helpful. I will get my meter and meet with a nurse on Tuesday. I think for thanksgiving at least I'm going to eat like I normally would, and then try to figure things out a little before my appointment on Tuesday. I am really dreading this whole thing.

I’m a little bummed. I had a 1/3 cup dreamfield angel hair pasta and meat suave for lunch with carrots and grapes and my one hour was 132 so it was over my limit. I’m really hoping I don’t have to give up pasta.

Solidarity sister. My doctor said it's ok to cheat a little on Thanksgiving, just don't go totally crazy. None of us want to be here but it's been nice and helpful to chat with others going through it.

tiffbabey I’m 27 weeks tomorrow so I still have a while to go to. While the diet I have doesn’t seem bad, I know I’m going to need to find variety. I’m also dreading if it can’t be controlled by diet which I know can develop later on. That being said this has been a really supportive group so stick with us and we’ll get through it together.

What's your fav before bed snack?

What's your fav before bed snack? A cup of fair life chocolate milk and a handful of almonds. My number has been 80 or 81 in the morning and it keeps me full for most of the night. I have also done an apple and peanut butter or cheese and crackers. The chocolate milk is definitely the best though.

Between this thread and Pinterest I have been able to find out some great things to eat. I am not hungry for most of the day like I was at the beginning.

What's your fav before bed snack? My favourite is blending frozen bananas, peanut butter, and almond milk..it’s like ice cream! Also popcorn. No issues with either personally.

tiffbabey, It;s okay to feel completely overwhelmed by all of this, but it does get easier. Time will fly by and you will soon be done! kbw, grapes spike me the worst. The few times I have tried to eat them I eat 8 and my levels spike sooooo bad. Pasta has no effect for me so hopefully it was just the grapes for you too and you can enjoy more pasta sweetsurprise, I don't eat a bedtime snack...but I know a lot of ladies who get really good results with full fat ice cream. A 1/2 cup serving is usually the recommended carb intake and it really helps with cravings

maddisonrose I’m suspecting it was actually the sauce combined with the pasta. Every other time I’ve had grapes I’ve been in the 70’s/80’s. I’m going to try the pasta next time without the sauce.

I'm worried about my appointment next week. Every morning I have very high fasting numbers. Like 119. All my other numbers are ok. Hoping I don't have to take insulin at night. I hate shots.

I'm worried about my appointment next week. Every morning I have very high fasting numbers. Like 119. All my other numbers are ok. Hoping I don't have to take insulin at night. I hate shots. If you are in the US your doctor will likely recommend an oral medication first. My fasting numbers (even on oral meds) are a little irregular, some mornings 90-93 and some a little over 100. My post meal numbers are usually at/under 120. I'm currently on 1500 mg of metformin and the next step is to increase my meds to 2000 mg, and then if that doesn't work possibly a combination of oral meds... Insulin is usually the last step, especially if all your other numbers are good. Are you eating late at night before bed (like 11:30-midnight)? A high protein snack helps my numbers but I'm still trying to find variety that works to keep my numbers low when I wake up. I have the best success with some almonds and a string cheese, but that gets old fast so I'm going to try some Fairlife Chocolate milk tonight.

aprilz81 thanks as always for the info. I have been having a late night snack but not that late. More like 9:30pm since I go to sleep by 10. Hoping you're right about oral meds!!!

What time do you get up? That is also something I struggle with... I have my snack around 11:30 but don't get up until 8:30 and sometimes that is too late but of course I don't know what that magic time is since sometimes my numbers are okay. My doctor tells me to get up earlier to test and eat but so far I can't make myself get up earlier than I have to.

I’m struggling. They want me eating 15 carbs at breakfast, 30 for a mid morning snack, 60 with lunch, 15 for an afternoon snack 60 with dinner and 30 before bed. Anytime I eat more than 40ish I get too close to comfort to that 120 number. I feel like 60 g carbs and getting it below 120 in an hour is impossible.

Anytime I eat more than 40ish I get too close to comfort to that 120 number. I feel like 60 g carbs and getting it below 120 in an hour is impossible. I would double check with your doctor, mine wants my numbers at/under 120 TWO hours after eating which is a huge difference. I find that if I eat close to 60 carbs my body can't get under 120 in two hours without meds, I can't imagine it is even possible to do that in one hour. The carb counts are close to what mine recommends, just the timing for after meal testing is different. And... At/under 120 is all that matters. Even if you are a little over, a 123 number isn't going to hurt you or the baby, especially one hour after eating. You don't get "bonus points" or a healthier baby if your number is 100 versus 119 when you test.

I have lost 5lbs since starting the new diet. That's awesome! Congrats! It's a small perk of this annoying diagnosis. I have lost 7 pounds in the past 3 weeks! I went to the OB today and she said I've only gained 7 pounds total during the whole pregnancy when you take that into consideration. The baby weighs almost 5 pounds.

Well I am up 30 in total and if this keeps up, I don’t foresee me gaining any more. I wouldn’t be opposed to losing 5 more as long as baby boy is healthy. I only have just over 4 weeks left so we will see.
