A lot of us are in the middle of our glucose testing so I thought it might be helpful to have a thread where we can share tips and commiserate together! I don't have my official diagnosis yet, but it will probably come in on Monday.
In the meantime I just created a google sheet with three tabs, one for my glucose log, one for my food log, and one for my "plan" that I'm making up for now based on what I remember from last time. I downloaded the Google Sheets app onto my phone so I can update this from anywhere and don't have to carry papers with me. If anyone would like a link to my template PM me your email address and I'll send it to you. Obviously you can tweak and modify as you need to but it might help to not have to start from scratch.
When you get the template, you will need to save a copy to your own google drive and then update that template. If you don't save a copy and then work from the copy you will be updating the template itself.

This is a great idea. I have my three hour test on Monday so I will know by this time next week whether or not I am joining the GD club. 👎🏻

The GD club is not fun! But I did take a week off when visiting my family in the states, last week. I didn’t even test because I knew it would not be great. Thankfully the midwife was nice and understanding with me at my last visit. My numbers seem to still be stable. But gosh those lucky charms were totally worth it!!!

I'm dreading Thanksgiving more than Christmas now (not that Christmas will be easy). Our Thanksgiving dinner is so full of carbs and starches that I'm not sure what I will be able to eat. I don't want to be miserable, but the thought of no homemade rolls, pecan pie and just a little bit of mashed potatoes is almost making me cry. Even some of the things I know are full of protein (cheese ball I make from chipped beef, cream cheese and a little green onion) I won't be able to eat much off because I can't have the crackers that go with it.
We don't typically have a ton of Christmas parties/events so while there will be temptations it won't be super bad. We will have our church Christmas party and our family Christmas events but probably not much else.
Again, I'm just hoping the metformin gives me a little more flexibility...

Oh my god I didn’t even think about thanksgiving. 😭 I will literally cry. I have been looking forward to it for weeks. Sweet potatoes and stuffing are my favorite.

I had strep over Thanksgiving at it made things incredibly difficult to eat and just not taste as good so I'm not impressed with losing out on both either when I should have been able to fit Thanksgiving in!! We have 3 family Christmases the weekend of Christmas so I'm trying to just be happy it's all at once and not stretching throughout the whole month, lol. But my birthday is the week before Christmas too and I love going into the city for fun Christmas family treats that day. Anything I can get my hands on I'll freeze for the new year. Lol. I've decided this kid will just owe me a box of Christmas chocolates every year on out now

I've decided this kid will just owe me a box of Christmas chocolates every year on out now I just bought a bunch of halloween candy on sale/clearance. I guess a bunch will be going in the freezer! It is all fun size so I can have some every now and then, just not as much as I want to eat. I have one family Thanksgiving, my bridal shower luncheon (with yummy cake), a church Christmas party, two family Christmas events, New Year's Eve with friends, a few hockey games (arena food is awful with the carbs, I might have to eat before I go), and our anniversary to work around. I guess this gets me out of the Christmas baking I typically do for gifts! I'll save a ton of money!

I celebrate Christmas Eve more than the day. I go to my grandmothers and we usually have a fish dinner. Unfortunately I don’t eat much fish and usually eat linguini with clam sauce. That may be off the table if it turns out I have GD. My stepmom just called me and said that if I can’t have sweet potatoes and stuffing, she will make it for me when I can have it again. She is the best. 😊

I don't go here but I feel so bad for you ladies having to manage this with the holidays coming up. DH joked with me that it wouldn't of been so bad had i been diagnosed with it because it would have forced us to limit our carbs (a large portion of my go to meals). He's on a health kick lately and has been losing weight. Thanks dude, I'm quite okay not having to manage that on top of my seizures.

Question. When you go to restaurants what are your go to selections? This is where I struggle the most. I try to go somewhere where I can get meat and sides (steak, meatloaf, chicken, etc.), then I will get a salad with dressing on the side and then do my carbs with some sort of potato. My weakness is the bread that comes to the table... Last time around I found out that I could eat some thin crust pizza without too much of a spike (like Donatos pizza)... But just about any sandwich is out of the question because of the type and size of the bread. We eat out at least once a week and while it is nice not to be cooking I feel like my options are limited. I just hope the Metformin helps give me some wiggle room so I can not be quite so strict (or miserable).

While a GD diagnosis isn't the end of the world it can be serious and tough to manage. And that on top of seizures and being pregnant would be the worst.

I failed my 1 hour screening test and have my 3 hour test on Wednesday.
For those of you that had the 3 hour screening test, how did you feel during/afterward? A good friend of mine said she felt so bad after her 3 hour test, she couldn't work that day.

I almost passed out during it so they did my hour two and three blood draws while I was laying down. Later in the day I felt fine but the morning was shot. I really hope I feel ok this time around.

A bit tired/crashed in the afternoon but not sick feeling. The last time I had to do the 2 hour was my first pregnancy so probably closer to 5 years ago now and I don't really remember what I felt like then, but I passed that one. Good luck!

We did a big grocery trip today and I think I made some good choices. I know I don't really know what my trigger foods are or how much it's affecting me yet since I haven't had my consultation yet but I'm having a confident moment right now haha.

Question. When you go to restaurants what are your go to selections? I feel like in my area, I'm seeing more and more restaurants featuring whole 30 and/or paleo friendly menu items. I'm thinking those could be good choices if you could find them!

A good friend of mine said she felt so bad after her 3 hour test, she couldn't work that day. I had to do glucose testing early because of PCOS. I failed the one hour barely and had to do the three hour. I felt absolutely awful at the end of it. So weak and jittery. I ate (which did not make me feel better) and then took a 3 hour nap before going out with my family later that evening. I could have stood to sleep the rest of the night. I am not looking forward to doing it again. I thought they said I would have to retest around 24 weeks but maybe it is 28? I am going to be 24 weeks on Tuesday and they didn't say anything at my last appt.

For my 3 hour with Ava I was miserable. I just felt a little icky during the first hour right after drinking the drink (mouth sticky and gritty from all the sugar and not allowed to have anything to drink), the second hour I was just really sleepy, then the third hour I got hot flashes, nauseous and shaky. I tried to breathe through it but about 15 minutes before my last draw ended up throwing up. I had to fight with them to take my blood since it was so close and I had a feeling I had failed anyway. After calling my doctor they finally took the draw and I was right, I had failed the first two readings so would have failed anyway.

And it is official, I did fail the one hour. My reading was 168 and should have been below 135. I'm also slightly anemic so need to start an iron supplement. I feel great physically, but it sounds like I'm falling apart on the inside.
My post lunch reading was 151 and that was eating about 30 carbs AND a 1.5 mile walk. That just doesn't sound possible when I ate the same lunch yesterday without the walk and my number was just fine. I've requested a prescription for a new meter in case this one is going crazy. I know these numbers aren't high enough to do lasting damage to Faith or me, but it is so frustrating trying to figure out what I can eat and how much. I'm hoping the metformin kicks in fairly quickly to stabilize things.

I asked to be tested at 15 weeks this pregnancy because I have PCOS and I also had a 10 pound baby last time. It was really hard on me at first because I typically follow a paleo diet style and can't get on board with things like milk and bread type grains being better for me than fruit. I've adjusted a lot of things and now hang the hang of it. All of my post meal numbers are spot on it's just my fasting and pre meal numbers I couldn't control so I am on Insulin. In Canada, they do not allow metformin because it crosses the placenta and goes to baby but Insulin cannot cross the placenta but no complaints since i've heard quite a few horror stories about metformin.
I also recently got cleared to exercise again which has been a major help! so if anyone needs some quick at home workout routines I have a few that work wonders on "cheat" meals. Also in regards to the holidays I wouldn't stress too much about indulging. As long as it's not an everyday thing you can easily help counter balance some stuffing or mashed potatoes with extra protein and a good walk. On thanksgiving I stuck to turkey and veggies for dinner and allowed myself some pumpkin cheesecake AND small slice of apple pie and had a great number so don't sweat it.
At restaurants, I always choose something with a side salad. Clubhouse sandwiches with only 2 slices of bread always works, steak and chicken with veggies, protein style burgers and yam fries work for me too. Everyone is so different with GD but it's totally workable with everyone's food preference styles.
There is also a ton of keto/paleo recipe blogs if your looking for some new ideas!

I'm surprised you can handle two slices of bread. My body can't handle more than 15-20 carbs for breakfast or my number is too high, I can tolerate about 30ish at lunch and dinner but two pieces of bread or a burger bun would likely put me over the limit. I wonder if it is the insulin you are on that helps with that?

aprilz81 I'm sorry you failed. At least you know now officially and can develop a plan. Hugs. Thanks, but it is 100% not a surprise (but I had a glimmer of hope I would pass). I've been testing my levels and "experimenting" with what I can eat since Friday so I'm a few days ahead of the game so to speak. They are calling in a prescription for a new testing meter that I can use on my arm instead of my fingers so that will be a big help. I'll go pick that up later today if they can get it ready. I'm also going to have to figure out what to do for dinner tonight. We have NHL tickets tonight and all the stadium food is full of carbs. I think I'm going to eat dinner here and maybe get some popcorn or something at the game. It will also save us some money because arena food isn't cheap!

I can tolerate bread, whole wheat pasta, brown rice etc for meals even had some halloween candy and was fine but without fail my fasting numbers just wouldn't come down to where they wanted. The endo just explained that when they see this it's completely hormonal and tough to control. GD is so weird and frustrating. Hopefully you can find what foods work/trigger you and workout some "treat" foods to help you through the tough days
