I picked up my testing supplies today. My insurance covered everything except for the alcohol pads so I only paid $2.68 out of pocket. I also did a grocery store trip. I bought some fresh veggies and a few fruits. I also bought my yogurt, whole grain crackers, brown rice and a few other GD friendly foods. I just had a yummy lunch and now I am going to relax a bit.

That’s great that your insurance covered everything!!! I wonder if this has been said to everyone?? But my doctor told me not to use anything with alcohol to wipe my hands with before testing. She said that the alcohol can alter the results. Is this crazy talk?

I will know more when I speak with the dietician because she is supposed to show me what to do. Unfortunately I just made my appointment and the earliest they have is Thursday at 1. 😞 I was really hoping it would be sooner.

I've never been told to use alcohol, just to make sure my hands (or testing site) was clean. My dad is diabetic and he doesn't use alcohol pads before testing.
And guys, I'm so freakin' excited. The metformin is kicking in and I actually need to eat MORE carbs than I was. Last night after dinner my reading was actually too low (63)! I felt fine but called my mom (she is a nurse and lots of experience with my Dad) because that sounded too low to me and I was right.
My fasting number this morning was 90 and I had 40 carbs with breakfast and my reading 2 hours later was 107. I'm pushing the carbs for lunch (70) just to see what it does, but regardless it does look like the meds are going to give me some freedom to eat my favorite foods in moderation and allow me to splurge for special occasions (my shower, Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc.).

Well I failed the one hour with a 167. I have to fit in the green huur before my appt this week. I was devastated. I did a quick search because besides DS being large I was in the low risk side of things and apparently if you have thyroid issues during pregnancy your risk goes up 4 times for gestational diabetes. So basically now I just want to tell them screw the three hour and I’ll just do the diet and track my numbers. I’m so frustrated.

I had 70 carbs for lunch (two hot pockets, so not healthy at all) and my post lunch reading was 107. Happy dance for metformin!!!

But as long as you wait for the alcohol to dry before you poke your finger, it won’t alter the results.

I just made my Matenal Fetal specialist appt for next week. Anyone care to post their grocery lists?? Keep in mind I have not seen the dietician yet so this is my list based on what I have read here and some research that I did. I bought salad especially with spinach in it, sweet potatoes, brown rice, plain Greek yogurt, cheese, whole grain crackers (the ones I bought are sooooo yummy,) cucumbers, apples, peanut butter, whole grain English muffins and I bought light whole wheat bread which is what I usually buy anyway.

My fasting number this morning was 86. I am guessing that was good. I am going to check again an hour after my breakfast and see how the whole wheat English muffin I had with my eggs will effect me.

That actually seems low for one hour after, I only have to be under 120 two hours after. It will be trial and error, but don't cut back too far on carbs, your body needs them to function properly. I had a days after the metformin kicked in where my post meal numbers were below 90 (borderline too low) so I upped my carbs again and that got me back into range. I'm not a doctor or medically trained, just going off what my doctor and mom (again she is a nurse) told me. If your team is fine with it go with their advice over mine.

I truly appreciate your input knowing you have been through this though. It has helped me not fear eating any carbs. I will know more on Thursday after my appointment, until then I only have my research and others input to go on.

I had the same reaction the last time and the fact that diet alone didn't work for me made it harder to adjust so I completely understand where you are. You are doing great without having had any consults yet and you will figure this out! If you google "GD meal plans" you will see that every meal and snack does have carbs, just not as much as we would probably normally eat (or at least not as much as I would normally eat since I could live on carbs alone). I'm not trying to be a know it all, I'm just trying to encourage you and everyone else here that we can do this and it might not be as hard as we think it is when we first get diagnosed.

aprilz81 Thanks. I google random food carb contents all the time. My google search history is super funny. It’s things like how many carbs are in a sweet potato or how many carbs are in a cucumber followed directly by Beyoncé twins baby pics. 😂 Pinterest has a ton of great snack and recipe ideas. They also have charts and such with carb amounts and good food pairings. It made shopping without the appointment a little easier.

I have been super thirsty. Anyone else dealing with this? I am unsure if it’s a GD thing or just a pregnancy thing but I drink so much water in a day. Most days I do close to 100 ounces plus a cup of brewed ice tea. It also has to be very cold or I have no interest in it. I pee a lot lol.

I have been super thirsty. Anyone else dealing with this? How are your glucose levels, do you have your meter yet? Being super thirsty is a sign of high blood sugars, but it could just be pregnancy related.

If anyone is interested, I have the OneTouch meter and I found the app to go with it. (iPhone) It synchronizes and tracks my numbers for me with Bluetooth. It makes it so easy just to hand over my phone for the log. It also can track patterns and you can make notes too. I love this app.

Hi! GD repeat offender here. In a way, it's easier this time because I assumed I'd have it and I'm a lot less stressed about it. Blood sugar guidelines are the same...90 fasting and 120 one hour after meals. My complaint is I have to see the dietician every 2 weeks for her to scrutinize my numbers and talk about insulin at the next appointment if my numbers creep up. All for my OB to be like, looks good. Keep it up. 🙄 But in general, it's not bad and nothing to get too worried about. I will also pig out on thanksgiving. One meal won't derail your pregnancy. Remember, you're not looking for perfect! Repeat offender here too. Are you in Canada where they put on you on insulin without trying oral meds first? I'm on Metformin and it has made a world of difference. The last few days I've been able to eat pretty much whatever I want and my numbers have been fine. It is amazing! Now I just have to focus on making smarter choices and not going too crazy just because "I can".

If I ever think they're getting serious about the insulin, I'm going to ask about metformin. I'm certainly not going to let them push me into insulin without trying other things first and I need to see a serious increase in the numbers. Im pretty lucky that I have no trouble with my after meals. It's my fasting numbers that I'll fail periodically. I sleep like absolute crap and I know it's pushing up my numbers. But I'm still comfortable with them overall. The dieticians here are just...aggressive. Last time around I was put on Glyburide (spelling?) which was a small pill I took once a day. I was put on Metformin this time since I had some already from using it to get pregnant (PCOSer here). Some doctors will do a combo of Metformin and Glyburide with as much/more success than insulin alone, and it is a lot cheaper.

DS sits with me and asks a lot of questions during a lot of my blood tests. My dad was over today because I was pretty sick and it worked for him to come over and play with the kids. I heard DS telling him about my blood tests and saying "she has to do them to keep her and the baby healthy". I just thought it was really sweet that that's what he's learning from it ☺️ He's really concerned about all the pokes but wants to help out a lot now and will get me a Kleenex to wipe the blood away and stuff.

Thank you guys for all the great advice! The dietician was very very happy that I had started testing and had info to give her. She also said my numbers have been great. I have to email her every day with my readings and see her again in a week. She gave me some suggestions on foods and how much should be part of each meal.

That sounds great marygracerich!! I emailed my dietician yesterday with my first weeks numbers and she was very happy with them provided I was still eating enough. So I keep getting braver adding more and more, and she just wants me to continue emailing her weekly to monitor.
