They're already talking speech delay at 9 months? My pedi is generally pretty laid back, but he made it sound like it's ok to wait and see when they are so little. ETA: based on his history of EIs its probably a good idea to get tubes before the fall/winter anyways.

Yes, hearing loss from all of the ear infections. Well that's not great news, but isn't hearing loss related to EIs usually reversible? Chase's hearing is 100% as of a couple months ago - and he's no longer mute! - and trtlcrzy's S had similar issues that were resolved post-tubes. Hopefully that's the case for H as well. Yes, S didn't really talk at all before her tubes and now she babbles a ton and says a few words.

I feel like your pedi may be jumping the gun a bit.

I wasn't at the appt because I was in California. I filled out all of the paperwork beforehand so my MIL could take him. She just told me everything the pedi said last night.

You quoted me before I added my ETA, but I think tubes are a good idea.

I feel like your pedi may be jumping the gun a bit. Technically, she should have referred us to the ENT a couple months ago after his 4th EI in under 4 months. We were already at the ENT for the spot in his mouth and she said it was possible for one of his EI to be caused by the airplane. So we didn't even talk about tubes then. But now that she thinks he's delayed with speech, she wants to stay ahead of it.

Drop off went about as well as I expected. She was super excited to go, but when she realized I was leaving she cried and didn't want me to go. I primed her with "Llama Llama misses mama" but I guess that didn't help. S and I quote from that book whenever I'm not going to be with him. It only occasionally helps

Re: speech loss. Chase had started talking before his ears got too bad, but he was pretty much mute by the time he got his tubes. The first week or so after, the poor kid was so easily startled by noise, there was no question that his hearing was coming back. It still took a few months before the audiologist would sign off on his hearing being 100% and he still has very few words - far fewer than Colin at a similar age - but he babbles constantly and is making progress. He still gets EIs occasionally and I'm pretty convinced he'll be one of those kids who needs tube placed again, but I'd still do it all again in a heartbeat.

I'm sorry tgrimes that's tough Although I, too, am shocked they can see a speech delay at this age. B, who is 3 months older, has no words and isn't walking. At his 9 mo, when I brought up concerns bc he was so far behind his brother at that age, she said that at this age there are so many variations on development, that she doesn't even start to look for that stuff till after a year. I'm curious what made the pedi think he was delayed.

So I spent most of Ns appt talking about j. She wants to see him if he keeps up with his tantrums. She doesn't want us to move n into his room bc he's most likely jealous of her and more changes won't help right now. Blerg.
But N is a doll and is 70% for weight 🎉, and thinks she will be walking soon😬 and skip real crawling.

I survived my first day back at work. Of course after several cool days, today was 91. T starts pre-k tomorrow. I think he will love it.

Birthday party question: how likely are you to attend a birthday party for a 4 year old if it is from 10-12 on a Sunday morning? I was originally planning on the Saturday before, but the spots have been taken.

I'm sorry, tgrimes. That's stressful. If it helps at all, I (like other posters) have known kids who were behind speech due to EI. My sister couldn't hear and wasn't talking, once she got tubes it was a whole other story. Hopefully H is the same!

I'm sorry. Are they thinking potential hearing loss from EIs? Or something else entirely? Yes, hearing loss from all of the ear infections.

Not that 10 is insanely early, but for Sunday you're competing with church and ppl just wanting to be lazy.

I work 4/5 weekends in a row right around the time of the girls' birthdays. :/ I'm bummed it will be hard to do much of a celebration.

tgrimes interesting about the speech 'delay'. Is he babbling at all? Does he respond to his name, loud noises, etc? Did he pass his hearing check at birth? I'm surprised they'd go straight to "delayed speech" at 9/10 mo old unless you're seeing those red flags with his hearing. I would probably still have him checked by an ENT/audiologist, if for nothing else but peace of mind. B's hearing was at only 40% capacity pre-tubes, and he had no history of EIs, but he is at 100% now. It shocked me at the time bc he seemed to hear ok and understand us, but they described it as being underwater--everything sounded really muffled and unclear to him. He was 15 mo at that point and I was pretty confident his speech was delayed, but was surprised that it was his ears due to his history (or lack thereof).

wedding random question - what kind of helmet do you have for C? We have to send one to daycare now and am looking for one that fits wider heads...we have Nutcase, but would be up for spending less than $60. We have two of these: It was $55. We got the first one at a bike store and the second on Amazon.

Hi everyone! I'm finally getting a spare moment. My day was OK. A lot to learn and a lot to process. The girl who is supposed to be showing me stuff doesn't seem focused or have any direction as to what she is supposed to be training me on so that is frustrating. But the company seems good and everyone is friendly. I hate being new. I just wanna get in there and know what I'm doing.
