That sounds extremely hard and upsetting tgrimes. I'm really sorry it's not going smoother. What do they think the fever is coming from? Can we do anything? They're not sure. The blood work came back normal but no one has read his chest X-ray yet. It took them 9 hours to read his arm X-rays so.... My sister is going to stay with him tonight and I'll stay tomorrow. 9 hours to read the X-ray while he's still inpatient? What a crock of shit. Fever + disorientation has my mind jumping to possible UTI, but I hope it's just him and his healing "norm". One day post op is usually not the best day for anyone involved and he's so lucky to be surrounded by his support team. What drink is on the menu tonight? A day in the hospital is certainly deserving of a few.

I had three glasses of wine and....nothing. Wtf. I mean, it tasted good and all but if I was drinking it for the flavor I probably would have just drowned myself in bacon instead.

He hasn't been able to pee on his own & they put the catheter back in today. Is that a sign of a UTI?

I forgot how much fun this stage is--where they stand up but forget how to sit back down. J was just bawling in his crib because he couldn't remember how to get back to a sitting position from standing up. And now he's wide awake. At 2:30am.
Is this a leap? It must be a damn leap.
Good thing I stocked up on wine.
ETA yup. Just checked out the wonder weeks app. We are at the start of a 5 week storm cloud and 2 days away from the next leap.

tgrimes I'm sorry his recovery isn't going better and that they're taking so damn long to read an x-ray! I hope they get their shit together and figure it out. Hopefully tomorrow (today?) is better.

It's rough. I hope you were able to get some sleep? I changed my alarm to 5:30 so I got about an hour after my post. H and C were passed out in the glider when I checked on them. It was adorable. Almost enough to forget the crappy night.. almost.

Sometimes that just happens as a reaction to the original catheter they placed during surgery. Either the body (for lack of a better term) gets lazy from not having to do work when the catheter is in or the urethra muscles get a little irritated and spasms not letting you relax enough to go yourself. Having a prostate at his age I'm sure isn't helping matters. All that being said, urine retention is a sign of a UTI. Hopefully they grabbed a clean catch to test when they placed the new Foley last night. I'm thinking of you guys!

tgrimes I'm wicked late, but wanted to say I'm glad your dad is safely out of surgery. I work in spinal cord rehab (SNF) and have patients all the time following your dad's surgery. If you have any questions, please ask Where was the surgery? Neck, mid back, low back? Has his arm pain improved? Has he peed yet? Sorry if I'm bombarding you. Just ignore if it's too much right now.

Shut up really? This is awesome! His surgery was probably mid to lower back, like right around the top of his hip bones. He still has the catheter in this morning. He knows he's in the hospital today and he's coherent, so far. Chest X-ray showed some fluid but it's not pneumonia yet. We should have the results of the urine analysis some time today. Just in case he doesn't get in to the acute rehab at the hospital and I end up checking out these skilled nursing facilities, what do I need to look for/what questions should I be asking? sophiegrace

tgrimesSo re: urination. It's not uncommon to have difficulty after this surgery. It could just be some inflammation in the area of the spinal cord that controls it. And when the inflammation is gone, he won't have any issues. I asked about the area of surgery to see if the arm issues had anything to do with it, but the nerves that control the arm are not down low in the back. So it is very unlikely to have been caused by nerve damage. Which is good. I can't remember, have they got him up walking? Is he walking on his own at all? Is it different from before? Does he now need a walker? If he can, make sure he does. Re: acute rehab vs SNF. Usually AR is more intense, they require more Hours of therapy (3 hrs/day b/w PT, OT, and speech- which he shouldn't need - speech that ia), but the length of stay is shorter. Where as SNF has less intense therapy and longer length of stays. So if he's recovering slowly, you want a longer length of stay to maximize recovery. If there are mobility or bladder control deficits, he will recover the most immediately following surgery so you don't want him coming home ust because he feels more comfortable Ask about average length of stay, hours of therapy, is therapy 1:1 or group, ask to look at the gym space and equipment, do they have single or shared rooms. That's all I can think of right now. I'm sure I will be back with additional thoughts.

Thinking of you tgrimes. I'm sorry it ended up being a UTI, but glad he'll be getting the treatment he needs to knock it out of his system. In all honesty if you want the best place for your dad to go ask a staff member that you've thought highly of where they'd want to be sent if they would be in the same recovery situation. But things to consider: -Which places does his doctor have privileges to round at (if any) -If he needs to leave the facility for his appointments will they provide transportation or will your mom have to provide transport -in house pharmacy? Can mean the difference between a few hours or an entire day if he's prescribed something new -things may be different in CA, but IME private owned > state run in just about every aspect if his insurance offers the option - in the same train of though a dedicated therapy facility tends to be better in terms of nursing care than a long term care facility with a wing for therapy patients -these are all nit picks, wherever he ends up going will be safer and better in the long run than going home even if he's not thrilled with the idea. Become a united front with your mom and sister and don't let him talk any of you into letting him go home too soon. You are such an amazing daughter for being there for him
