I was up very early today, got my morning routine done early, hubs and L out the door, and am now enjoying a few peaceful minutes with my coffee before the day starts for real.
It's amazing to me how quickly the squirt is gaining language now. She can't say a lot of the words but she understands soooooooooo much. Definitely follows all basic directions, and is answering yes no questions very reliably. Cousin E who is 3mos older has so many words now, and is able to reliably mimic just about anything. I love hearing them chirp along in their little voices.
Anyway hope everyone has a great week!

It's raining here today so we are heading to a museum. I'm tired, but I guess that's my new normal. I haven't heard back from the virtual teaching job I applied for so I'm assuming it is a no go at this point since school starts in 10 days or so. Is anyone else starting to think about Christmas? Maybe it's bc I have so many bdays right then too, but I'm seriously thinking about gifts and needs and when I'm going to pick things up. I'm also trying my hand at pickling this week. I am planning on doing some freezer meal planning and getting a few things into the freezer.

We decided at the very last minute to drive to the path of totality. It's only a 30 minute drive, and according to Google maps there is surprisingly not much traffic. We are in the car now - so far, so good.
This could end up being a complete nightmare or super awesome. I'll report back later.
Happy eclipse day!

dizzycooks I can't think about Christmas too extensively yet. We usually start thinking of what to get people in November and knock all of our shopping out in a couple of days in December. There are some crafts I want to do that I'll need to start on sooner though.

how long was totality where you were?

how long was totality where you were? Only 40-something seconds. It seemed faster than that. Dd1 hid her head in my armpit the whole time and dd2 seemed mostly oblivious to what was going on. It was pretty crazy how dark it got, even leading up to it. You could see stars, and bugs and bats started flying around like it was evening time. We went to this cute little town called Aurora and watched it in their city park. Not crowded at all, just pleasantly festive. Great playground for the kids while we waited. Now we are home already! Couldn't have been better.

nellieoleson that's awesome. Our peak is in 3 mins. It is definitely subdued light here. Going to run out and check it out real quick.

And not that anybody cares. But it was a little unimpressive. Definitely got dim but nothing too dramatic.

I think it was definitely unimpressive if you didn't have glasses. I saw about 70% eclipse and thought it was awesome but that was with glasses on. It was hard to get pics even with the glasses over the lens.

Another thing that was cool was that right after the totality ended all the shadows through the tree leaves were mini eclipses.

nellieoleson, I saw those on the ground in my backyard and I'm so lame I didn't realize what they were until I started seeing all the pictures. Kicking myself for not taking any.

We had totality for two minutes forty seconds. It was so awesome that I cried. Amazing! We had family and friends over and t was the perfect day. We watched it with our feet in the pool then swam after.
Re: xmas, km not a big plan ahead or gift person really but I have a big thing I want to get dd and will prob wait for xmas/ her bday. It's a kitchenette thing. Is that what they are called? Or just a kid kitchen. I also want her to have a piggy bank so prob get that too. More that I will wait on those things for a holiday than actually planning out xmas.

M has to go to a pediatric dentist. She has a lip tie causing a gap in her top front teeth (I have the same thing, but didn't realize until last year what caused it). So our dentist wants it dealt with sooner than later. Other than that her appointment was uneventful: he counted her teeth and reminded me to brush for her.

I didn't even know it until I took her to the dentist a few months ago. They didn't mention anything about it causing a gap in her front teeth, though. They said they only dealt with it when it caused problems with feeding? Dd1 has super close together teeth like I do and they are already like... she'll need braces. Wheeeeee.

I have a pretty significant gap because of the lip tie being left alone. To be fair, my parents didn't know about it either, my mom didn't nurse, and I never went to the dentist until last year. I've hated my smile for years, and I don't want M to go through that. ETA: as I understand it, the lip tie causing a gap is one of those things that doesn't happen, unless it does. There's no real way to predict whether it will or not. I think part of the plan for me is to cut mine and get braces at some point, if I remember what he said last year correctly.

Dd napped during the eclipse and we woke her up for totality. She looked up very interested and said "light" and pointed. She'd never said that before. I'm glad we got her up (dh's idea) so she could experience it. I think she looked up without glasses right after though. Mom fail. We will have another one in our area in 2024 with four minutes of totality. I would recommend traveling for it to anyone within a reasonable distance. It was amazing.

dizzycooks - congrats on baby #4!!! You make such gorgeous sweet babies!!! crimsonandclover - sorry for your flight cancellation but it sounds like you pulled it out! Work it girl! I borrowed welders glass from my neighbor and watched the eclipse with my coworkers. It was only 85 percent in DC but still pretty cool. It's hard for me to get on these days I miss you ladies! I can only get on at home and then I always have little monkeys hanging off of me. How do you ladies do it? Do you hide in the pantry??? Should I be hiding in the pantry ?!?!

theoprah I am either too busy/tired to do more than skim after the L crashes or i have a cancellation/am sleepless and have way too much time and am like a board stalker. Over poster. The pantry (if we had one) sounds like a ice place I might like to visit though. I bet it would be peaceful and lots of snacks!
