My kids need their phones to get into the house when they get home from school. There are a couple days a week they come home to no parent home (first year we are doing this and I'm still an anxious mess but the first few days have gone well). We installed a garage door opener with wifi so they each have an app on their phone to open it. We didn't want to deal with keys because both kids would most likely lose them. But we tell our youngest to leave his off and in his backpack and my oldest is a rule follower so we don't really worry about her.

I felt a bit manic sending the kids to school this morning. And we live in a state with some of the best gun control laws.
ETA: It doesn't help that the superintendent sent out a communication earlier this week about a higher police presence in the mornings at the school due to 'a threat to school safety that some students received from a classmate'. No details on what the threat was.

I mean, Taylor has not whispered a word about him using her AI image to endorse him, which really surprises me. I thought she would come out swinging for Harris after that, but nothing. So who knows what she thinks.

Damnit, why does Brittany Mahomes have to be the worst. I am a KC girl and love Patrick, but she is truly unlikeable most of the time. I'm not doubting she has those views, but I wonder if some of it isn't for attention. She knew what would happen and football season is starting up again, what a coincidence

Quicksand, Spontaneous combustion, slugs. I WISH those were mine and my kids biggest fears now. Okay but why was I allowed to watch Unsolved Mysteries every week? I used to practice stop, drop, and roll in my bedroom. Because the biggest threat taught to us in school was a fire. Wait, that and things thrown at a train ricocheting back at us, causing death and dismemberment. It's easy for me to say kids don't need cell phones in school and I used to call my mom from the office or cafeteria pay phone, but my mom assumed I was completely safe at school every day. I understand teachers wanting them banned and parents wanting their kids to have the ability to text during a lockdown. I don't have the answers. Stop, drop, and roll! Oh man, used to practice that one. Can we add untied shoelaces sucking you into the escalator to the weird kid told fears list?

Watching a compilation of students explaining where they were/what was happening when it took place, the way they are calmly explaining it and how lockdown protocol went into effect, it is devastating to me. I know some of the calm can be shock but it enrages me that they are so used to this fear that everyone knew exactly what to do in that instant. But when you compare that calm retelling next to the footage of Columbine kids sobbing on the news, it's a pretty stark contrast. I feel like side by side, those kid interviews really just show how much we've failed these kids.

I live near mountains with glaciers and falling into a crevasse was high on my list of things I needed to know how to manage as a kid. In addition to the quicksand et al.
Perhaps not surprising but I’ve never been close to a crevasse ever.

Our district started using the pouches in the HS this year. Parents were outraged when they announced it at the end of last school year but now that school has started the feedback seems positive. I too am conflicted, but the pouches are also pretty easy to break open per tiktok
I hope everyone is taking care of themselves today

We put a number pad lock on our front door that my girls know how to use to let themselves in. It has never occurred to me that a smart garage door opener could be a thing!

So who knows what she thinks. she was okay endorsing Biden, and old white guy, but now, crickets. Along with Kelce tendencies. Read between the lines. I don't think we will hear a peep from her. Thank you

I’ll never forget the day dd and I were at the grocery store and some noise made her think of gunshots. She told me her worst fear is a mass shooting but not to worry because she knows how to hide/distract/ throw things to try and keep safe. She was 7

Taylor’s gonna be PISSED. I seriously doubt she’ll be pissed. She knows who Brittany is and still hangs out with her. It’s not like Brittany has changed who she is.

I, along with many parents in our county, kept DD home from school today. When I got home yesterday, she hugged me and just trembled. Some parents are keeping their kids home for mental health reasons, but there have also been rumors of other 5 other schools (including ours) being targeted today. I read several updates from law enforcement that said the threats weren't credible, but DD shared screenshots from other kids that said otherwise. I also heard Apalachee HS knew of a threat ahead of time, but am not sure if that's been confirmed. The county on the other side of me, Hall County, arrested a 14 year old late last night/early this morning for threats against Hall County schools, and that county is a part of the group of 5 we were told weren't being targeted. I live in Jackson County, and the sheriff shared that they interviewed the child responsible for yesterday's shooting last year, along with his father, and nothing came of it. I'm assuming if Jackson County interviewed them, he likely went to middle school with DD last year, but I'm not sure.
I've seen several TikToks from students and as usual, it's devastating. I read that students pulled the coach that was killed into the classroom and were trying to save his life, only for him to pass in front of them. Local law enforcement has been praising the school's SROs and crediting them with de-escalating the situation, and I'm so thankful they had the training they did. Winder is a very small town and our community is just rocked by this. Thank you everyone for the love.

Hope you all are well today ♥️ . Those poor kids and families.
The gun violence has been extra the last 2 weeks in my area with a great deal being teenagers.
It just feels sad and impossible. I can't see how these patterns will ever change with the selfish adults not caring for the future of all kids.

*homegrown white terrorists Yes! Dd had an issue with a boy last year. He consistently told her she was racist against white people and that she was white herself because she was closer to white complexion wise etc. she was consistently told to let things go because he had a tragic thing happen with his step dad being violent in the home. Fuck that. We told her she had permission to do whatever she needed to in order to feel comfortable because I’m sorry no. Yes I felt for the kid (it was a big local story) but violence is also learned and also tragedy doesn’t mean you get a pass to be an asshole who gets to say racists things etc.
