As we were getting the kids ready for bed my 3YO was stalling and turned his back to me to do something and I guess I rolled my eyes out loud and he said “moooooom, I’m not doing anything wroooong” and I felt really badly but also it was so funny.

My husband randomly tells me about my kid's camp policy of charging $1 for every minute you're late for pick up after 10 minutes and I thought he was going to tell me that he was late for pick up and had to pay up but he totally caught me off guard and said "we could just leave him there for an extra hour and just pay $50". I mean $50/hr is steep but we're also so desperate for childcare.

At the beginning of the summer I let my 7YO pick a color for a lunch box and he picked this hideous bright pink and I regret it almost daily. It's such an offensive shade of pink.

I’m in a super dark head space today, but I do have one from work.
I work at a daycare. One of the kids was running around and he ran RIGHT into the corner of the diaper table. Like the leg part, not something sharp. But he was like a cartoon character running into it, bouncing back with a dazed look, and then falling on his butt. He jumped right back up and wasn’t hurt at all (I think he hit it with his belly mostly).
The confession was how long I laughed. Like so hard I cried and couldn’t catch my breath. I think it was a release of some of the tension I have been holding for the last week, and I totally needed it.

My fiance hasn't been able to work for a week because of a medical issue and jumping through hoops for the necessary accommodations. He was finally allowed to go back today.
I am so grateful to have some time to myself.

Oh right, I forgot my asterisk. *not actually an inconsiderate asshole. I have busted my ass to get there on time (3pm), ran out of a job site practically mid-sentence and stressed the entire 1.5 hour drive back. If I can’t joke about it I would be screaming/crying about how brutal these camp hours are for working families.

My mom has been buying all these new toys for the pup she adopted and my dog is jealous and keeps stealing them so I just spent almost $50 on dog toys.

And we didn't do camps partly for that reason and also the astronomical cost. It's been a long summer.

piratecat STP a LONG LONG LONG SUMMER. mine went back to school this past monday, but weren't able to get into the same camps for the entire month of july. so on top of the absurd cost and hours, it was two different schedules. it nearly killed me.

Ask me how much camp (and aftercare!) I paid for this summer and my child ended up missing due to life circumstances.

Ugh, that’s such a nightmare scenario. It’s bad enough doing camp and daycare transport for us but at least daycare hours are consistently longer.

There are SO MANY 9-3 camps around here. And even 12-3. WTF, that's a class, not a camp. If I drive 45 minutes north or south I can get camps that go from 7:30-6. But in my town almost all end by 4:30 at the latest - even with extended day options. MH and I have worked it out that I do drop off and he does pickup so that we can both work full days. But it sucks. I don't understand why more options don't exist.

But it sucks. I don't understand why more options don't exist. There are two camps here that do full days. Only two. And only one of those runs the full summer. It’s at the uni where I worked, so that’s where we put DS this year. He liked it the first two weeks and then was so over it and fought me every day. I guess next year we’ll break it up with the second camp (who I happen to work for now). And I have the flexibility now to occasionally do some of those weird midday camps. But I don’t understand why those are what 90% of the “camps” are around here.

There are camps that run 8am to 6pm here (oh, you pay extra for 8am to 9am in addition to 3pm to 6pm OBVIOUSLY), but you have to sign up in October. Yup - already planning for summer 2025 and her last day of camp was yesterday.
This is how she ended up missing one week that I paid for this summer. (She missed two others for family emergency and illness, which I can’t be upset about). We ended up planning a second trip due to a wedding, but that tripped was planned in January. Could I have canceled that camp week? Yes. But I got a discount for signing up for x weeks so removing a week removed my discount. In the end, it was a wash. It’s a GAME.
Meanwhile, my kid’s school aftercare is offering sign ups three days only, next week 3-4:30pm. We’re on vacation. 😵💫

Most of the daycares around us offer school age summer programs. I’ve always used these, so they run daycare hours. The kids love them, they do a ton of field trips and special events, not just sitting at the daycare every day. As they get older, I’ve let them pick a couple weeks of other part time camps for something different, but most of the summer is at the daycare camp. It’s worked out awesome so far.

DS’s childcare center used to do summer care for school aged kids, but they didn’t make enough off of it to make it worth carving out the space in their building. I would gladly pay money for him to go there if it was still a thing.

DS has been going to the sample place for aftercare and camp that he went to for preschool. He’s aging out though and will only have a few days of aftercare this fall and then nothing. I work from home 3 days a week so most days I’ll be home but my worry isn’t him coming home alone. I’m concerned about the extra hours I’ll be with him😬 My home days usually end at 3:30 and then I have an hour and a half to myself before I have to be accountable to anyone again. Losing that time is going to be rough.
I also have no idea what we will do next summer since he won’t have that camp and the others are often 9-3 or 12-3.

I have no love for my old daycare provider for a variety of reasons, but I think the feeling is mutual 😅. Whenever I try to hit her up for a random day here or there for big kid childcare, she's ghosted me. But I see other big kids on her FB and she's gushing about hanging out with the big kids. Lol, but there have been multiple occasions where she texted me to pick up a "buy nothing" thing for her and I've done it, when she has been out of town. I think I'm getting played. 😅

Take the hint. Either she doesn't have room or doesn't want your kid there. 2. Wtf. You aren't being played, you are being stupid.
