I've done the Read Harder Challenge the past two years but this year I'm not loving the prompts and want to try something else. So I've decided to try the 52 book reading challenge. www.the52book.club/2024-reading-challenge/

I'm definitely doing PopSugar, and am thinking about Book Riot's Read Harder. I also do a couple from various Facebook groups, Kat's Booknerds Read Diversely and Florish and Blott's Harry Potter and the Order of the Planners reading challenge are some of my other favorites.
What book planner are you using for this year? I love my book planner and doing reading challenges!

Last year I did the alphabet challenge and was going to try to double it but I am liking the 52 week challenge above. I think I am going to do that and a once thru the alphabet again.

I don’t do categorical challenges, but I challenge myself in numbers. Last year I finally got back into reading after years of nothing. I had challenged myself to read 12 books, one per month. I ended 2023 with 26 books read. So I’m challenging myself to 30 books in 2024!

I’m not doing a formal challenge, but I’m challenging myself to read at least 6 classics.

I bought the updated excel spreadsheet I used this year.
I’m doing 3 monthly challenges instead of prompt based. (36 books total)
Beyond the bookends Novelist StoryGraph love the library.

I just pick a number. Rereads count. My goal for 2023 was 125 and I beat it. Should I go for 150 in 2024?
I still use Goodreads.

I use both Goodreads and Bookmory. I like Bookmory for its monthly book calendars to display what I have read.

I also just pick a number and just use goodreads. I love reading, but I don't really care about what I read other than keeping track of it for the sake of not re-reading unless I want to, and writing a short sentence about what I thought of it to jog my memory if I ever have reason to care about what I thought of the book for some reason (like if someone asks me about a specific book that I know I read but I can't really remember much about it other than that I did read it until I look back at both the synopsis and what I had thought). I don't even change my number goal for the year...it's always 100. I usually read a few more than 100 (this year was 103), but I don't care to try to read more.
I watched that tiktok and at first I was like, oh that seems cool, but after a few pages, I was like, wow, that's a lot of work for stuff I don't care about, like pages read and stuff.

My goal was 125 this year and I barely hit it. I had to finish with some novellas to get up there. But I was balancing out some much longer reads earlier in the year, so it worked out. ETA: I am going to have the same goal next year.
My first classic for 2024 is going to be Of Mice and Men, and it’s only 3 hours, so that will get me off to a good start. 😂

I’m doing a reading journal this year. I’m a librarian but I was in the habit of just reading books for school and as an elementary librarian that meant I was reading 99% children’s books. I LOVE children’s lit but this last year I pushed myself to read beyond that and had some great reads. I’m going to continue that. My goal this year is 40.
My journal is pretty simple-total book tracker, DNF log, one page for each book. I am keeping track of which books are ebook, audio, and print, just out of curiosity. I’ll also track children’s, YA, etc.

I’m not doing a formal challenge, but I’m challenging myself to read at least 6 classics. I have been reading more classics the past few years. My favorites in the past few years have been The Count of Monte Cristo (suggest the Penguin Classics translation), A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, The Hobbit, Slaughterhouse Five, and East of Eden. Other favorites that I read many years ago are Persuasion, Our Man in Havana (my gateway to Graham Greene, who became a favorite author), The Sun Also Rises, A Moveable Feast, Tortilla Flat, Cannery Row, Fahrenheit 451. I also have some really-didn’t-like on my classics read list, but I don’t want to give you any preconceived notions about those.

In 2020, I challenged myself to read instead whenever I was tempted to doom scroll or even just bored-scroll. It actually did help my anxiety and was good for my final reading tally. Since it’s a dumpster fire of an election year again, that’s what I’m planning to do again this year. I guess you could call it the Doomscrolling Challenge. I read about 67 books in 2023, which was more than my goal of 60, so I think I’m going to challenge myself to 72 this year.
I am almost done with a couple that I couldn’t squeeze in, so that will get me off to a good start if I can finish them this week before the work/school routine begins again.
ETA I just added a few that I forgot to my Goodreads, which brought me to 70 last year. Bumping this year’s goal to 75 to challenge myself a little.
One was a Magic Tree House book that I read with my kid, still counts, right? (I like to keep track of what I read with my kids to look back on them.)

Cannery Row has been on my list for a long time and I just kinda forgot about it. I would love some do not read recs. But my taste seems to differ from others. Like Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights were sooooo boring and/or awful IMO. (Sorry, Brontë fans!)

Like Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights were sooooo boring and/or awful IMO. (Sorry, Brontë fans!) Withering Heights was on my really-didn’t-like list. (Leaving the autocorrect.) I read it a couple years ago in solidarity with my teenage neighbor, who had to read it for school, and we both kind of hated it. Gothic romance isn’t my thing, I guess. My “meh” list includes Rebecca, Far From the Madding Crowd (beautiful writing but sooo long), A Farewell to Arms, Mansfield Park (I like most other Austen). TBH, Of Mice and Men and The Grapes of Wrath were my least favorite Steinbeck, but I’m probably due a reread, since those were the two I read in high school. I read Tortilla Flat and Cannery Row in my mid/late-20s, and absolutely loved them. There is so much more humor in those two books. I also read Travels with Charley around that time, and loved it, too. (It’s Steinbeck’s travel memoir.) I read East of Eden a few years ago and although it was a huge commitment, I really loved that one. It is a really sweeping and ambitious story. I feel really strongly that most classics are worth at least some effort, because you never know what you will get out of them, and it’ll be different for everyone. (And even different for oneself depending on the stage of life.) Very Reading Rainbow “You don’t have to take my word for it,” lol.

And then I taught it as part of my regular curriculum too. I still love it. I can't wait for my own kids to read it, although that usually backfires on me with a lot of books (like dd and the babysitters club books and the Ramona books and ds and Where the Red Fern Grows, they weren't fans). Other classics that I didn't love until I taught were To Kill a Mockingbird and Night. And my all-time favorite from school was Lord of the Flies. I also re-read all the Jane Austen books every few years for fun because I miss them. Same with some Shakespeare plays. But I know I'm weird in that.

I generally agree with this, but I read David Copperfield last year while I was waiting for Demon Copperhead to be available from the library, and OMG I want those hours of my life back. I hated it so much. And I generally like Dickens! I LOVED Great Expectations! I think it even ruined Demon Copperhead for me because I pretty much hated that too.

My reading goal for 2023 was 150 and I just made it. I need to give myself room to breathe…so this year I’m going with 100. I’m hoping it keeps me calmer and gives me a bit more time for other things.
As for classics, I feel a little basic.
Loves: Anne of Green Gables, Little Women, Emma, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Count of Monte Cristo
Hates: Lord of the Flies, Wuthering Heights, The Chrysalids

My 2023 goal was 175, I got to 193. I think I’ll go with 175 again.
December was a big month for me, as it usually is due to time off work. I read 26. Favs were Night Circus, A Strange and Stubborn Endurance, and Murder in an Irish Churchyard.
I’m looking forward to starting a fresh tracking list and challenges (I’m doing 52 book and read harder). Also looking forward to the new Crescent City. It feels like forever since book 2 came out.
